and how many of those systems are capable of running DCS? A 32-bit OS isn't even capable of addressing enough RAM to meet minimum requirements... Hell, any video card capable of reliably driving World at a playable framerate is gonna max out 32-bit address space....

Incorrect.

Minimum system requirements are, as far as is relevant here, 3GB of RAM and 512MB of video memory. Fits (just) inside the 4GB space of a 32-bit Windows system running Dx9.

Video memory isn't relevant to framerates here as long as you don't max said memory; if only having 512MB of video memory, you'll potentially see performance issues if you set textures to max. So don't.

Which should get them told the same thing it got me told when i showed up with a machine that barely met min specs: "that sucks, guess it's time to upgrade"

I think you failed to understand my point.

I really hate to say it, but if someone is sufficiently technically disinclined as to intentionally order their computer with an OS in it which renders it capable of using only 40% of the installed ram (less if it has a discrete video card), is probably going to ragequit within an hour of launching DCS.

Why? Are you a mindreader?

I have personally aided people that made this mistake - specifically they kept their old windows copy and reinstalled that on their new machine. You see, one was a retired vietnam pilot who has no issues at all learning complex aircraft systems, but he just never got around to reading up on what this 32-bit vs 64-bit thing was. His old windows worked, he didn't see a reason to change that when getting new hardware.

This is COMMON. And it's not because people are lazy, or stupid. Quite the opposite; they are often people that are very busy with this thing called "real life", and just never got around to learning all that much about how computers work. But a little now and then, they might want to try reliving their glory days on a simbox.

Well, if you look at everyone who owns a computer as part of the potential market, it does have that lack of appeal. But, again, how many of those computers, ignoring the 32-bit problem, are capable of running DCS? The vast majority of consumer PCs are sold without a discrete graphics card. In fact, that number is rising since the advent of Intel HD graphics built into the I5 and I7 series processors, does ED consider them potential customers?

Did you notice that I picked up my numbers not of overall computer sales. I picked them up from computers that, in the previous month, accessed Valve's Steam service - which you may recalled is used towards playing computer games. See where I'm going? :)

I'm not saying it's smart, I'm just stating the actual facts. 32-bit users isn't something you can just shrug off. (Well, not if you're actually making a living based on people buying your games rather than just playing them yourself as a hobby.)

I know that my friend has 32bit win7 because when he bought his premade PC years ago it came with it. He don't know squat about 32/64 bit, and I'm pretty sure that 20 of the 22% of the remainging 32bit are the same kind of people

Well not sure why they are still supporting 32-bit? I thought this was taken out of DCS world two versions ago? We need to throw the book at people using 32-bit systems in their 3rd world countries.

such as?

I already told you where to look. Don't expect us to forcefeed you beyond that.

the what? I have never even -heard- of a computer crashing because it had -too much- RAM available...

Did the thought occur to you that i was talking about too little adress space? Besides, adress space and RAM are not the same thing. You can run out of one regardless of the size of the other.

well isn't a large player base in this game in russia? maybe they still use a lot of 32bit machines there?

not saying their third world,

Hate to burst your bubble, but the majority of "32-bitters" I've run into through support line have been americans. Careful with those prejudices. ;)

I mean, why can't the code lines from the SP/Options screen be integrated into the esc menu on MP screen? Just have it function the EXACT SAME WAY?

Might have to do with write protection, but there's ways around that if the file is already loaded.

IE, change controls, saves as control profile 2, next change, saves all changes as 3. When exiting, takes latest one, deletes older ones, replaces latest as default.

Because up until now ED tried to stay within the 32bit adress space limit.

Ok... but all controls are is read/writing text to a damn file.

Nope. There's a GUI involved.
