Hello

A few days ago, I came across two members (one here, one on a french forum) who had problems for downloading the Mi-8 module : they got an image instead of a download when clicking on the "download" button. They both used IE.

This problem looks now fixed (I just tested my self with IE, it now works).

But another member has now an issue when trying to download a mission from the "user files" part of the DCS website : he gets a .zip instead of a .miz

He also uses IE. I was able to reproduce the problem using IE too.

There is no problem using Firefox or Chrome.

To see the problem :

- Go to this page : http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/?arrFilter_pf%5Bfiletype%5D=2&arrFilter_pf%5Bgameversion%5D=84&arrFilter_pf%5Bfilelang%5D=&arrFilter_pf%5Baircraft%5D=&arrFilter_CREATED_USER_NAME=&set_filter=Filter&set_filter=Y

- click download for the Multiplayer mission "Border Conflict"

- using FF or Chrome, you'll get a .miz (OK). Using IE, you'll get a .zip (KO).

Thanks

Yep just tested on chrome and all was fine oh with IE your correct it gives you a zip with what looks to be all the parts or files that make up the .miz file but no .miz file.

At first I thought the worst that the file hosting server might have been compromised but by the look of the files in the zip more likely an error?

Technically, a .miz is a .zip, just with another name.

So, when I tested with IE and got a .zip, simply renaming it .miz gave me a functional DCS mission. But, this is not obvious for non-advanced users, so it's worth fixing it.

How is this fixable? It seems to be a quirk of IE not a problem at ED's end.

Btw, I am quite sure that everyone at ED is aware of this since the issue has been around for years.

Yeah I totally get your point Azrayen changing it might save a few "I can't get this working" threads plus it should be coming down with the .miz extension anyway, I wonder if it could be something to do with the way IE handles the .miz extension if thats the case then likely nothing that ED could do.

Have you any thoughts on this?

Just seen your post cichlidfan, if that turns out to be the case and your correct like you said then theres really nothing ED will be able to do and to me with my limited IT experience it looks like the likely reason is indeed something todo with the way IE handles that file type.

Noticed cichlidfan's post.

I believe it is IE trying to be intelligent by scanning the general layout of the file, and determining that it should be zip. In this case, it gets it wrong. It probably is the same way that if you have a .gif file, rename it to .jpg manually and when you view it in internet explorer, it will still animate because IE scans and realizes that it really should be a gif.

As the people above said, replace the .zip with .miz and all should be good

Actually, even when I did use MSIE, I never had this problem since my browser, whichever one is being used, does not manage my downloads. I use a download manager and everything works as it is supposed to 99.9% of the time.

I agree with "why people still use IE"... In 90s, I used to use Netscape to escape from IE. :P

Some frineds have issue about downloading my mods from my server. They are ZIP files. But dear IE downloads and changes extensions to *.MAN

As mentioned, this is IE trying to be smart. The only people who can "fix" it is Microsoft.

Rgr thanks for the info.

Nothing to customize with MIME types then... I thought of perhaps a TXT... but then, if IE rename the .miz into .txt it's less logical than the .zip.

Cheers
