PC is used mainly for flight simming, FSX/DCSW the main ones, maybe COD in time.

Essentially, I can either upgrade CPU/MOBO/RAM, or keep the prior and upgrade the GPU and maybe add RAM, cant do both, got to come out about $525 before taxes.

Thoughts please?

That's a monster GPU, would it not then bottleneck the CPU? In other words, would I see the full benefit of this GPU?

R9-290X would be Fine on the 1st Generation i-Series, especially at 3.9Ghz

add another 6GB of Ram too.

the 470 is the lowest part of the system, and it's a portable heater, if you want to run a portable heater GPU might as well run one with the most 3d rendering power.

You sound pretty confident there, I am not so confident that my CPU (even overclocked) is first rate any longer....

Well you got me there...was briefly looking at going for an AMD CPU "upgrade" but then I fell down the stairs and hit my head and changed my mind on that...

In Single threaded Operations/games, High End, Go with Intel, Value/Budget Tier Go with AMD Pile Driver CPUs

in Multi-Threaded Operations (Video Editing etc), Go with Top Teir AMD.

The next AMD CPU is due out early 2014 and will fix the Cache and Shared Resources problem, as well as the scheduler missed operations.

Well perhaps a nice GPU/RAM upgrade and a new case with better airflow is an enticing option then. Will a newer GPU boost DCSW/A10C performance you think?

"I have that same 920 @ 3.4 with a 760GTX and also a 3770k. You will get buyers remorse big time. The I7920 @ 4Ghz is still very fast. In most games (Borderlands 2, Crysis etc) the GPU will dominate, even with SLI the 920 is plenty fast and will not be the limiting factor or not enough to notice.

Really only SC2 in a game called Desert Strike does a fast CPU come into play.

I think the real reason is like many you have the hardware upgrade itch. You want us to give you the ok to spend. I'm underwelmed by the IVY, Hawell speed increases over the I7 920. No compelling reason to upgrade. Sorry to burst the bubble."

Good discussion here.

An interesting point of view. From that perspective (the 3 tier jump), most here would not need to upgrade for quite some time.

My i7920 is oc to 3.9, think an oc Ivybridge is a worthwhile upgrade? My fuzzy math suggests a 40% performance gain.

sandy bridge i7 2600k easily overclocks to 4.6GHz (fsb/multiplyer= 104x44@1.45v) with a corsair H80 cooler

will enable about 98% of a single GTX780 overclocked to 1120gpu/3010vram

stock 2600k@ 3.4GHz will get you about 60% gpu usage on a 780... depending on the game you're playing...

i tested this on world of tanks and DCS...

i've seen the cpu reach 75 degrees while encoding video with hyperthreading enabled, but I've never seen it above 70 in games.

anyway thats my first hand experiance, hope it helps some.

p.s. theres a video below where a guy slis two 580s.... i upgraded to this 780 from two 2.5GB 580's, and its a HUUUGE difference, 780 is WAY faster... i really don't trust SLI....
