fitness88 Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) On calling inbound, ATC says fly 320 for 18... Unless you are flying directly toward a known waypoint or ILS intercept point [indicated on HUD lower right corner] how would you know the distance you are flying? Thank you. Rangi Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 D=SxT, distance equals speed times time PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.
fitness88 Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 D=SxT, distance equals speed times time Apart from doing the math...there's no onboard gauge that I'm not seeing?
golfsierra2 Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) No. An aircraft is no car. You could do the math like navigators do or estimate your distance travelled by frequently checking your position against known waypoints. Modern aircraft with GPS support of course do have all those fancy features... Edited December 4, 2013 by golfsierra2 kind regards, Raven.... fitness88 Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Yes I remember the F-18 from Jane's did have GPS which gave you distance. Measuring against a known WP only helps if you're directly on course for both, other wise you need to break out the slide rule. Thanks to you both for the information.
kontiuka Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I believe if you go into ILSN mode, it will show you the distance to the airport (more accurately, a point on the landing approach path). This should match with what the ATC says when you call inbound. Of course, you have to have the right airport selected.

IMO F-18 from Jane's was full of s**t...:smilewink: Unless you can calculate you sholdn't be flying...:smartass: Speed of 360km/h should cover 1km in 10 secs. So when ATC says: fly 320 for 18 you do the following: - Fly 320 for 3 minutes (180secs) maintaning your average approach speed of 360km/h to reach ILS fix. When you wingman (leader) calls: fly 180 for 20 You do the next: - Fly 180 for 1:40 minutes (100secs) maintaining your average cruising speed of 720km/h. Now you see why imperial units simply suck big time...I never flew F-15C, A-10A, or german MiG-29A with LOMAC and FC simply because of imperial units. GGTharos Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 No, it's called pilot math and all pilots do it. 60kts = 1nm/min. 600kts = 10nm/min. There's a nice clock in the plane ;) Apart from doing the math...there's no onboard gauge that I'm not seeing? fitness88 Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Thanks again to all and I will certainly put these formulas to work.

leafer Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 That's an F-15 cockpit? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Blaze Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Looks like a regional jet. i7 7700K | 32GB RAM | GTX 1080Ti | Rift CV1 | TM Warthog | Win 10 "There will always be people with a false sense of entitlement. You can want it, you can ask for it, but you don't automatically deserve it. "
blkspade Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 At a of range 18nm in your example you should pretty much have visual on the airfield. In overcast conditions you'd want to be relying on ILS anyway. In either case just select ILSN and cycle though. You'll eventually hit a waypoint in the direction and close to the range given to you by the ATC. This is only confusing if your trying to get to Kras center or Kras-Pash because they are so close to each other. You can do the math if you like, but this works basically 98% of the time. Where it fails you can rely on your eyes and some knowledge of the terrain. http://104thphoenix.com/
leafer Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I was just pointing out we're talking about F-15. Having said that, I'd be surprised eagle drivers have to do mental math, though. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
GGTharos Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Then be surprised :) I was just pointing out we're talking about F-15. Vekkinho Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 On the other hand, as you cannot switch IAS/TAS/GS in FC all those "fly for XX" are just ear candy... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
