Sylvan Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 (edited) I was looking around the map when I discovered something. Have a look at this imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/5xflg Makes you wonder how old the map data that DCS World is built on is. A dam that is modeled in the game is the Inguri dam, which began construction in 1961 and became operational in 1987 so I'm guessing the map data is from somewhere around the mid 1960 and 1980. Not saying that this is some big deal, I just found it interesting and thought my fellow pilots also might. :) Edited December 5, 2013 by Sylvan
Andrei Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 It's old. Probably really old by today's standards. And has not changed much since first lock-on :) But that's all we have. For now. Grimes Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Its a bit of a mashup really. If you look on google maps you will see that some airbases look pretty close to whats in the sim, while others are either missing, re-designed, or in disuse. Neon67 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 i wonder however why they reduced the map size when fc was released ?

I'd like to see the Marneuli airbase, since it should be located on the current map, and is apparently a major airbase for the Georgian Army Air Section (formerly Georgian Air Force). I must admit I have never been able to locate for sure (in real life) the Alekseevka airbase mentionned here and there as the other major Georgian airbase, in the vicinity of Tbilisi - it doesn't seem to match any of the three airports we have, and satellite views did not show more airbases when I looked. 2nd French Fighter Squadron
Grimes Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 i wonder however why they reduced the map size when fc was released ? Honestly don't know. I've heard reasons given like memory usage and object count limitations. ED clearly wanted to move eastward with the map progression from LO>BS>A-10C. I suppose the area added with A-10C is mostly comparable in size to that of the Crimea, so it was probably considered. But to be honest I'd rather have what was added than to have the Crimea back. Its not near Tbilisi, but aside from Marneuli, this is the only other airbase I can find in Georgia that isn't on the DCS map. https://goo.gl/maps/neyvm Well there is a weirdish helicopter base, but at least when the google satillite passed overhead, there wasn't much there. https://goo.gl/maps/1SCJZ Maybe someday the current map area will get heavily updated with the new terrain engine. Its certainty something I would like to see that as a project down the road as there are lots of cool details missing from the current map or in the general area. I wish they would add some airports on the Turkish side, checked with google maps and there is one big one close to the Georgian boarder in Kars. Another further one is in Trabzon. This would make for more believable NATO operations in the area. Edited December 5, 2013 by Netsk Someone might remember me as 'FlyingRussian' from the Ubisoft Lock-On forum back in '03

I think being a small company in its infancy ED. worked with what was cost affective and now we are starting to see more realism, detail, in the worlds greatest simulator. Soon it will surpass our expectations as technology advances and demand initiates supply. This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig. If you think about it, this map has sooo much potential for all sorts of realistic scenarios if only it was expanded a little bit. Chechenya is just a few dozen kms to the north east, then to the south east you have Nagorno-Karabakh. There's of course Turkey, as you said, for all your NATO vs. Warsaw Pact goodness, and if you stretch the definition of "a little bit", even Iran... I really hope the map is expanded some day.
idenwen Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Someone tried to add another airbase or map details in the vast areas of plain green with a mod? Would that be possible?
