Is there a better way to fire from the gunners positions? I ask this because it seems very difficult at best to keep proper sight alignment when aiming down the sights. Same goes for the copilot reflex sight. Instead of using a 6dof style of manual aiming, is there a way to keep the eyesight lined straight down the sights instead of wandering all over the place?

Or a minute suggestion: placing a graphic marker to where the iron sights are aimed at for a visual reference when in these seats, such as crosshairs or an X, ranged with a known BZO.

For the flex sight, I'd say just get used to it. I had huge problems with it myself for a while, to the extent where I'd actually turn off my Track IR when using it, but in the end I got used to it, much like getting used to using the Track IR itself after some time.

For the door guns, I find the sights ineffective and in the way. They're made for infantry combat, not for shooting from the side of a moving helicopter. It's much more flexible and reliable to just raise your head as far above the sights as possible, fire a burst, watch the tracers and correct, much like you'd see door gunners do in Vietnam documentaries.

Door gunners more or less have a visual perspective and can more or less know where their barrel is pointing at any given time. Not only that, but most of the times their heads will be in line with the barrel. This isnt feasible under the current aiming system. Peripheral vision is basically nonexistent in DCS; did I mention I use 3 monitors?

Yes? I don't have any problems keeping my head in line with the barrel most of the time without even attempting, and once I've fired a first burst to get an appreciation of how to aim, there's no problem hitting the target.

Shouldnt have to pray and spray, should be able to maintain a proper sight alignment like you should. This isnt really up for debate, this is necessary to be able to properly aim! Crosshairs would be nice.

Since when do door gunners aim down the sights?

Since when do door gunners just aim 30 degrees off of where they are looking? Im willing to bet that gunners always keep their heads aligned with the barrel at the very least. Peripheral vision is nonexistent in DCS. I was once upon a time a 240 gunner, I know how it works.

I will agree that my sight line is generally aligned down the length of the weapon and not off to one side. I have shot out of an HH-60G where it was impossible at some angle to have your head behind the weapon since the weapon was so far out the window. In that case, I had no choice but to just start firing and adjust the impact point from there. Even when I can get my head behind the weapon, I don't use sights of any kind...I just aim slightly behind the target and let her rip. With experience it just starts getting easier. I've never even seen a door gunner really try to use the sights since the old M-60D days with the big ring sight.

Yeah, I can understand if you are aiming out of a porthole and dont have a great line of sight down the barrel, but the Huey door gunners have a great field of view. How are you going to get a clear shot with an aimpoint like this? Just asking for something to make aiming these guns a little easier, like making the focal point the BZO instead of a 6dof cockpit view, or crosshairs centered on the BZO.

Yeah I see what you're saying now. Even if my head is not looking down the length of the weapon, I'm still looking pretty close to the same direction the weapon is pointed, and it seems like right now in-game it doesn't do that.

Like in HUD crosshairs? In that case, nooo.

No offense, how long have you been using the door guns? I definitely agree that they can be challenging at first, but after some trial and error it shouldn't be too hard to land accurate bursts. I'm far from a DCS pro, but I have no problem hitting things with the door guns.

No, more or less when you right click it will bring up some crosshairs that after left clicking will identify enemy contacts. Crosshairs where the barrel is pointing, thats all. Its easier than hell to shoot the miniguns and be fairly accurate-with or without crosshairs (you cant miss unless you dont have tracers). Try doing that in an M-60 or an M240. You can walk the tracers in an M134 at 3000rpm where every 10th round is a tracer. M-60s shoot at 900 rpm, and IIRC every 3 rounds is a tracer. Good for soft targets like jeeps and aircraft, not so good for infantry. And Ive been using the guns since day 1. I "do" know how to shoot.

Well I've only tried with the right door gun, but I just tried it with both TrackIR and mouse control and in both cases, the sight line was right down the weapon, not off to one side like in your screenshot...until the mount hit its traverse limits and the point of view continued to move.

Think I understand what you mean by crosshairs, but I can't say I've ever felt I don't know quite well where the barrel is pointing, so I don't really see any need for such an indication.

Im always having to hold the middle mouse button down to readjust my view. Granted, using the mouse isnt so bad for me with trackir enabled, but its even more prominent using the flex sight, as Im always needing to use the middle mouse button to readjust my FOV.

Thats nice.
