Nealius Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Okay, so I'm starting to get fed up with the crap performance my HD7850 gives me and I am looking for an Nvidia replacement that's around the same price range, preferably no more than $175. I only run one monitor and a 3.4GHz AMD CPU, so it doesn't need to be anything on the super performance end, just good enough to give me a solid 30-60fps.
Gerg Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) It might be worth waiting for the Edge gfx engine update. The 7850 is still a decent card and you would only really make a slight difference in DCS for $175 but not other games really. Are you running 1.2.7 as i got a huge increase in performance with it on my AMD card. The 7850 should overclock well too so might be worth looking into until the new engine is out. Its not worth spending $175 for a slight improvement in one game imo. You might be able to overclock the cpu too which would help loads on a AMD cpu. Edited January 30, 2014 by Gerg
Nealius Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 I am running 1.2.7, and the latest AMD drivers. Performance is smooth but when I am looking at two parked aircraft my frames plummet to 18. I can't imagine flying an actual mission at those frames. For now I'm not looking into overclocking because I don't have experience in that area and my computer (or the room it's in) doesn't have adequate cooling for that much heat.
outlawal2 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Had a GTX 550TI and it ran DCS quite well... (lots of folks will pan it, but they are cheap and I think would run it well...) Better yet see if you can find a GTX 560TI... Not a hot rod or anything but should run decent.. I would wait for EDGE though... No idea how EDGE will run on older cards so you may need to save up for a better one so it may make sense to wait and see.. EDGE may run better due to DX11 and better optimization... Or it may require more HP.. Who knows? "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
dooom Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 hmm i dont know anything about components but i am running a HD6970 and get 31 frames locked. My specs are in my sig. Are you sure its your GFX? i thought that card was better than mine ASUS Tuf Gaming Pro x570 / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @ 3.8 / XFX Radeon 6900 XT / 64 GB DDR4 3200 "This was not in the Manual I did not read", cried the Noob" - BMBM, WWIIOL
Nealius Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 There could be an issue with my CPU since it's only running 3.6GHz, but parked aircraft (not client, not player, not AI, just parked) should not be taxing the CPU at all.

Overclocking on AMD cards is easy and built into CCC. You could get 20-30% extra performance for free out the card. Almost to 7950 performance and thats a $350-400 card. Just launch CCC go to performance tab and into AMD Overdrive. Stock i think its 875 mhz/1200 memory, it should handle 1000 mhz/1250 mhz memory easily and people are pushing them much higher still..
Nealius Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 Any adverse effects with temperature or stability?
Gerg Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) Id start off making smaller adjustments 1st just to see how it goes to begin with. maybe upping the speeds 50 mhz a time then trying in game for 5 to see how well it works. The card will run a little hotter but will be fine unless trying to double its speed or something lol. 1000/1250 seems to be a reasonable balance and people online are getting more than that easily, tho no need to push it to its limits. Too much overclock can make glitches or crashes happen but only when going to the extremes of the cards limits. Only thing that could be a problem is a cheap psu as they tend to not deliver advertised power, any decent brand name would be ok tho. Edited January 31, 2014 by Gerg
Nealius Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 I also noticed I can overclock my CPU through the CCC. Do you think any CPU overclocking would be worth it/safe with a stock cooling fan?
Gerg Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Yes you should be able to get a little overclocking on the standard cooler. Google the cpu type and see what other people are managing on the stock cooler. Did the card overclock ok?
TimeKilla Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I have a 4x core AMD normally sits at 3.2 but overclocks easily to 3.8Mhz its down clocked to stock as testing crashes in BF4 but the overclock seems unrelated which is nice. Plus my bois makes it very easy to push a bottom to overclock without using FBS as CPU is black edition. Would be a pain changing for stock to overclocked depending on what game am running rather find a happy middle. What CPU you running single core? :joystick: YouTube :pilotfly: TimeKilla on Flight Sims over at YouTube.
Nealius Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Did the card overclock ok? Sorta... I did 1000/1250. I haven't tested in an actual mission yet, but in free-flight the fps gain was very small...maybe like 5. Would be a pain changing for stock to overclocked depending on what game am running rather find a happy middle. What CPU you running single core? Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. Stock is 3.6GHz.

Are you sure its your GFX? i thought that card was better than mine Dooom: No doubt your CPU running at 4.3ghz is helping things. to the OP: I have an older i5, that's OC'd to 3.6ghz, and I'm using an HD7870. In single player & training sessions, (flying the A-10C), this card works great. Anywhere from the low 40s to 60fps. (I've set my max to 60fps, due to my LCD only being 60hz). That's also with a 2nd display running, to use with my Cougar MFD's. Plus, I've utilized an awful lot of tweaks via the threads here, to eek out as much performance as I can. check out some of these: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1870304&highlight=graphics.lua#post1870304 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=118535&highlight=set+affinity http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=68060 When playing a campaign (custom missions), that's when things really can bog down. I'll see the mid 20's, when there are a lot of objects. As with others, I'm anxiously awaiting EDGE. To see if that's any improvement, (as it should be, with using DX11). In the interim, I do plan to build a new gamer rig, using the i5-4670K CPU. And will opt to reuse my HD7870 GPU, up until we see how EDGE pans out. Try the tweaks first, (if you haven't done so). Nealius Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 I tried most of those tweaks, but I need to double check the graphics.lua. Sometimes updates will override those. I'm still unsure about switching over to Nvidia as most of my online flying is with Falcon BMS and many people have had lots of Nvidia driver issues with BMS.
