Yep, I cut one, some pictures start on this page in my thread http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=65388&page=8 I cut another yesterday and another one probably soon, both for friends that fly online with me. I didnt think when they saw it in person that they would be up for it. They were and both said that the pictures didnt really indicate how big it was.

Sorry, I dont have time to get the screenshot of the settings but I am running 4080x2160 in dcs world 1.2.0 I dont have soffth turned on right now but my frames did not vary when I do have it on. I get ~36 frames with helios and all exports running and I get ~42 frames with helios off but all exports still running. i5@4.5ghz with 8 gigs ram. my settings are similar to yours but I have clutter/bush maxed and I have 4xmsaa. Is aero being disabled when you run dcs? Thats the only thing I have seen account for such a drop in FPS when running helios.

Yep, replaced the vic with a c64 as soon as they came out. Would hate to think how many hours were spent on those machines! The C64 is where I got in to flight sim's with sublogic.

Jeez Louise, did you type that on a VIC20?

FYI, I have mine limited to 30 through the config file. i5 @ 4.5 with a 7970. Five monitors with resolution around 4100x2200. Once screen is also running helios. I never see it drop below 30 at altitude and at most perhaps it gets to around 20. From memory everything is high but I might not have hdr on. I also have everything exported that can be, i.e. cdu, mfd's, rwr etc. I am pretty much taxing it as good as it can be done. I think there is something fishy with your rig TBH.

Yes, as above. Also if you stil get errors make sure you are not running in full screen. As to other cards, if you say you need three more then that takes you to five. Either you get another nvidia which lets you run at least three more outputs or you change the whole thing over to ATI and get a 6 output card. Depends a lot on how much you want to spend really. If you change the entire card you could benefit with overall better frames for you outside view.

Lets put it this way, name one real simulator that does an amazingly better job than DCS. Some sims I can think of are xplane, fsx, p3d, cliffs of dover, il2, others... On my 4000x2200 display none of them give DCS a spanking. DCS is ahead of most of them with the exception of il2 but that is aging and not presenting as nice graphics. Within the genre what can you name that is miles ahead?
-
Yes, while there are currently only changes that most simmer wont use there are a number of things happening behind the scenes. The DX11 port is one of them. In an interview with LM the other day they mentioned that they are weaponising P3D. They are really extending the API and it could be a very good platform in the future. I wouldnt invest a lot of time in to it myself until the DX11 port as the graphics are too slow. DCS really works very well with an 8 megapixel display, far better than fsx ever could on a single machine.

Yes, very correct Jeff, your plans do have square inside corners and the rounded part is just a consequence of the router bit. On your other note, I can't think how many times I made yet another thing using the traditional techniques of making templates with table saws, jigsaws, my oscillating spindle sander etc so that I could then make nice copies from ply or mdf. At the end of every project I wished that maybe had I spent that time working towards the CNC I would have had it by now! Of course after a number of projects I would have had it and then been able to whip out the next in no time at all. If it's something anyone has been thinking about it really is worth the effort. Long projects become short and small projects actually get done because you can design and do them so nicely and quickly. Of course, there is a space issue! The smallest I would consider when working with sheet is a 4x4 which is what I first built. It does take up a larger footprint though.

Hi Peter, it does sound strange but I am not doing it :) It was just a thought to get around the fact that there is distortion at the edges. I thought if I rendered a wide enough area but only displayed a center portion that I would get an area with no distortion. Of course the overhead to do this is 4 megapixels and its probably likely that the distortion I am left with is the same as if I only rendered a 4000x2000 area to begin with. I was just thinking out loud :)
-
Peter, that is an interesting idea to squeeze the side view. I hadnt thought of that and no doubt it is a bit more framerate friendly than rendering 6000x1920 and only using the center 4000 pixels. I must say that with the portrait/landscape/portrait the distortion is much less distracting anyway.

SoftTH stretching view on left and right LCD
metalnwood replied to crankshaft's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Do you mean is there a way for softth to compensate for the distortion or do you believe softth is introducing some distortion? I dont believe softth has a working method to remove the distortion. I have thought in the past about seeing what performance I get by making a virtual resolution a fair bit larger than my three screen resolution and then only mapping the center, distortion free part to my screens. No doubt frame rates would plummet but you never know until you try. ps. scan this thread, I am sure there are tips about bezel compensation http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=71710 -
Can you recommend a Touch Screen Monitor
metalnwood replied to neroroxxx's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Also using the HP and it's working well. I have never plugged it in to any of my macs but I dont see why it would not work? -
It might be high, or not. Depends what their hourly rate is, how much they are charging for converting the dxf files so that they can do the run on their machine. They could be charging you around $100 for the setup and then the rest is for the machine time, tooling, material + operator if he just stands there and watches it.. The only way you will know if it is expensive in your area is to get other quotes. Make sure you have a chisel, Jeffs plans by default have round inside corners which you will need to chisel square to get everything to fit together, I changed the plans when I cut mine to add in dog bone corners so that I didnt have to chisel.

With m y new monitor config track ir centers the view right between my two center screens. So I have to look up a bit higher then press the center button so that its correct when playing. I know in dcs I can alter the view angle but that doesnt work in all games. Does anyone know if there is a feature for track ir that can offset the center point a bit?

Excellent, can kill two birds with one stone there. Acutally, that reminds me of another one where I used to work. Porn was not allowed at work, obviously, and this guy was pulled aside and asked if he liked men. I guess this ploy was to shame him for accessing porn at work. He said no a couple of times. It turns out his boss who has access to the records of where employees have been browsing noticed a lot of access to mancity. Ploy backfired as mancity is the website for the popular soccer team manchester city.

Yes you are right, no mare racing in this one! Although the thread title does fit it's legacy which takes up a couple pages. No doubt if it's title was replica a10 thread or something it would get a couple more people looking at it. Just got all the screens turned on, what a pita that was for various reasons - mostly small cable lengths!

Have you got a mini me to hop in and see what it feels like? :)

Good choice to wait. I liked my x45, its been years since I had it but I replaced it with the CH gear. The CH stuff was as good as new when I sold it for the warthog, it does last. BTW, the warthog stick is the same size as the CH stick. They are both replicas so if your hands are too small for the fighterstick then they are too small for the hog. I manage and so does an awful lot of pilots so I reckon you will be OK :)

Thanks Kuky, I am happy with the result and I was really thinking before I put the rails in that I wouldn't be able to use the pit and have to give it away, just too hard for me to get in to but now its great :)

OK, I had to work on the important part. Getting in and getting out. To be honest it would be far to much hard work for me to do it if the sides swung open. It is still hard to get in around the stick and the monitor. I am too big and not as young as I used to be. Sure, I could get in if it was the real aircraft, thing to hold on to , foot rests in the side of the fuselage and I can stand on the seat. Too bad this is made of MDF, I would dare trying to stand on any part as a regular strategy to get in side it. So the theory as stated in another post is to put wheels on the cage that the seat sits in and put that on rails. Then I slide it all the way out, hop in, roll forward and it locks in to place. Revere procedure to get out. I had some spare angle iron but not enough to complete the job so they are a little short but prove the concept. It rolls along very easily. I think I will attach a spring loaded latch with a small knob attached so that when I roll in to place the latch will secure itself and I can pull the knob when I want to roll out. Because of the orientation of the angle iron as rails it can only go in and out, it cant go sideways or slip off. Motorising it would have a cool factor but in reality its quicker doing it manually and very easy. I am using 22mm skateboard bearings. So far so good and I will finish it off tomorrow.

I changed my mind. The price of SSD's is down again so I thought about adding another one in my machine to get some of those larger flight sims off the spinning disks. So, monitor arm or 256GB SSD? Both the same price.. Well I realise it would be difficult for me to build my own SSD so I decided to do a hack job and make the mount for the touchscreen. After all, it cannot really be seen , once its all skinned you wont see it. It just a basic 2x4 cantilevered and a vesa mount on the end. yay, can get my ssd now :) Still thinking about the keyboard tray though.. I have some ideas.
-
Lucky I wasn't drinking in front of the computer when I saw the price. I will get something like that for the touchscreen though. Going to do a bit of a search before bed to find someone that might have one in an actual shop.
-
Yeah Pie, I thought about that but for the mean time with a lot of panels to make who knows how often I will be moving things around slightly so best to keep them mobile for now. Just doing some research on some sort of keyboard arm as well.

yeah, I have cut the kids out a few dinosaurs and planes. Every once in a while they want another and they refer to my cnc machines as the 'toy machines' :)
