  1. Frank, re the Xeon, I dont think thats the answer for gaming. They were made to have higher on board cache which made them better for some computing and were favorites in enterprise servers but DCS just requires raw clock cycles to do things. an ivy i5 or i7 should easily be clocked to 4.5ghz and then you are in the territory where you can start to get acceptable frame rates on multi screen. I would have said stay away from th2go but your application for using it with the mfd's seems to be a good one I use an asus dc2 7970 with 6 outputs and have used five of them - 3xviews, 1xhelios and 1x CDU screen. It can help that you arrange your screens in windows so that they take the smallest footprint in terms of total pixels E.g. if you had 6000x1000 already and added another monitor then you should add it to the end so that the new total is 8000x1000 or 8MP rather than arrange it at the bottom so you had 8000x2000 total area which is what you would have to tell DCS and does impact frames from my experience.
  2. I have thought many times over the years about building a motion platform, the only issue would be to make sure that it had heave as well as pitch and roll otherwise not much point for a flight platform imho. Technically it's not too hard to engineer but what makes it prohibitive for me is that I am no longer content with a small screen, small pit etc. My pit would weigh a heck of a lot now which makes the logistics of it a bit different, the design of it quite different to cater for the weight and then the costs go up as well... Too bad I can't seem to settle for a small pit thats light and would go on a much lighter/cheaper platform.
  3. What on earth setting gives you 60 fps with 3 screens for views and another helios screen? On the latest 1.2.2 I am getting up to 50 with portrait/landscape/portrait and another helios monitor. I do have all the settings on high except water/civ traffic and heat blur so potentially I could go higher by dialling other stuff back. Like you Gadroc I had thought about PLP and potential issues with DX11 etc but as long as I stick to windowed mode it shouldnt be a problem and I currently dont have any sim other than FSX that doesnt play nicely with PLP in windowed mode.
  4. You currently will not get the frame rates I suspect you are after with that configuration. There are a couple things with yourt configuration though, they really need to be upgraded to get a good eprformance. Most people I know running triples and helios on a 4th screen are overclocked to around the 4.5ghz mark and are running either one or two generations newer with their graphics cards. A 5970 is a fair bit behind. I had a big improvement going from a 5970 to a 6970 mostly because of the extra ram, then to a 7970 was an improvement again. To do what you want I would suggest a current generation gpu like the 7970 and a current chip OC's to around 4.5ghz
  5. Dont get the update version, nothing but complaints for needing to have bs1 installed every time you reinstall bs2 which has been frequently with the previous update processes. Even though I have the bs2 upgrade and got it from day 1 I finally got the full version for $24 because it has always pissed me off.
  6. yeah, finally got the bs2 full so I dont have to keep bs1 installed to use the upgrade.
  7. Thats because you can't, not really smooth. The two graphics cards will not help you as DCS does not take advantage of them. In many cases you will get slower frames with them both enabled. If you have ATI it is certainly recommended to turn off crossfire. I have about as high powered machine as you can reasonably get and can not run that configuration smoothly as rendering three screens independently is a machine killer. As mentioned a post or two up, you should get 40 frames on a powerful machine with 3 screens set as center and another helios screen.
  8. First, your options say you are trying to run in full screen. You can't do what you are attempting to do in full screen. Turn that off and see if things improve.
  9. I thought the most important tool was a 4 axis cnc machine :) I still had that on my to try out list one day.
  10. Supersheep, it it working the opposite. You are telling the game that it can render to a real resolution of 1920x1080 so that is the actual res the game will render. soffth will then scale it to show on your monitor. The real question is where will fraps capture the frame from? at 1920x1080 or after it's scaled down? Not sure.
  11. Oh, duh. I didn't see fraps and assumed you were using the built in video recorder. If you can get away with a track having everything you need then dcs can render a track file to video in any resolution you need
  12. Good stuff, I am sure it will be appreciated a lot by somebody.
  13. PMDG, etc can all jump in a lake :) I have zero interest in flying those huge things. Carenado make mostly smaller GA aircraft that suits me fine and from what I read from an owner of the bonanza the carenado/XPX version is the best one around.
  14. Can it not be done in windows mode where you can arbitrarily type in all sofrts of resolutions? If it was larger would the part of the window just not be visible on screen but still able to render the video?
  15. Not sure if you can? Are you trying to run in full screen? If so then untick that option so you are running in windowed mode and then see if it will let you type in the res of 1920x1080. If not then perhaps you can do it with softth.
  16. Dont want to brin up this topic again but is there ever a bs2 sale? I own it already but I would buy another so that I dont need to keep installing bs1 to use my upgrade key in dcs world.
  17. It looked pretty smooth for a high resolution system. I guess some of the guys leaving comments need to understand that an extremely high resolution system recorded on a camera with a fraction of that resolution uploaded and encoded by youtube will not look as good as their game on their pc. Wonder how many pc's are required to drive it..
  18. yes, you need to bring up the camera view in the TIR sotware to see why it's doing it. It could be other reflections giving false information or it could be that the camera needs adjustment in it's position or where it is pointing because it may be loosing sight of the reflectors. With the camera view on it should be obvious whats happening.
  19. With my aces seat I have the centre part cut out so that makes things a little easy, previously I had it set up like this and it worked out well. it was on a small pedestal that overhung the seat. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w9f3p312abgwbpd/whbase1.jpg?m
  20. For those interested in an extension. Most of the ones I sold were ~ 3-4" Thats 75-100mm and I think thats about perfect. You dont have to have it too long to get the positives of an extension, i.e. better feel and control. You dont want it too long, the only reason to have it too long is if you need to get it higher and I would recommend that you get the base higher and the extension shorter if you need more than 4".
  21. Yes, I like the look of mixing photo with objects, I like photo scenery by itself from a bit og height. I was just wondering purely from the perspective of hunting around for ages with your TGP or equivalent what the landscape would like doing that, I think it would look a little weird :)
  22. It will for sure have the capability to look like a very nice sim when you put the addons in. I do wonder if the photorealistic textures are the way to go though. Something like ORBX populates the world more with real objects. My only thoughts about that come from thinking how I would be using my TGP while scrolling around the landscape looking for 3d objects while constantly seeing flat 2d on the ground which I am sure will look a bit strange.
  23. I am well behind the times with current dcs world, it seems some activation stuff may have changed? Last night I upgraded an it used up an activation telling me I had nine left. I thought previously it would not because I had already had it installed. Anyway, after a windows moment I had to revert to a windows restore from 2 days ago. It left my new dcs install working but used up another activation right away.. Ok, 8 left but I shouldn't run out anyway..
  24. Hi, while it is possible to export many things to a different monitor I am not sure that this is possible as both views use the same in game 'view' meaning you can't have both active at the same time. Afaik.
  25. I would say that I would take the 680 over the 6990. You are only using one of them and that single 6970 you are running is less powerful than a stand along 6970. I have a 7970 which is more comparable to the 680 and it goes fine, I can't compare first hand but it's driving my 5 monitors with good frames. If you were running other sims like Fsx as well then nvidia does seem the way to go. I stick with ati because I can do the 5 screens off the single card.
