  1. He states that: "To be perfectly honest with you I do not remember the details. All i can tell you is we regularly experienced JEM, a jamming strobe on the TID created by jet engine modulation. This is what is reflected back to the AWG-9 when the radar signal hits the fan or turbine blades of the bogey aircraft engine. We did not train that much on the ECM aspects of things. The ALQ and warning systems were old and unreliable. In fact I seem to remember being instructed not to use the counter measure equipment as it acted as a homing beacon for certain SAMS. Nice huh." There was also someone here whose father said the RWRs were useless to the point that they had to mount their own in the cockpit facing different directions.
  2. Thanks for the link, I have that document saved to my HDD already :) It's a pretty good overview of the evolution of the systems. Although the ALR-45 was entering service while the Vietnam War was going on, the US left before any of their planes fought with that system for sure. The latest Rivet Haste F-4E's had the ALR-36/37 and from the google discussions between F-4 crews and ground crew, it seemed like it was much better than the earlier systems which Robin Olds hated. I only imagine the ALR-45/50 was better but it's hard to tell. Not a lot of info out there other than what the crew says. It seems it would be nice if many crews could paint that picture for us.
  3. Indeed, the F-14B has the ALR-67, but I am mostly curious about the F-14A (as it was the one that saw most combat in the 80's). I would like an idea as to how bad/good RWRs of the time were, and if the were actually an improvement over the Vietnam-era ones mounted in F-4's, for example.
  4. I was reading a few threads on here about the RWR of the F-14, primarily this one: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=140336 As well as a reddit F-14A RIO AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/6w6nmo/f14a_rio_ama/ And it appears that the ALR-45/50 was a very unreliable system. My question is whether such unreliability was typical of the time. Are RWRs IRL this bad? I have read briefly that the ALR-56 that initially equipped the F-15 had reliability and false alarm problems as well. I suppose we are spoiled in DCS. Furthermore, does anyone have anymore information or actual experience with these systems? My research shows that by 1977, the ALR-45C was fitted to F-14A's (see the Standard Aircraft Characteristics sheets: http://www.alternatewars.com/SAC/F-14A_Tomcat_SAC_-_April_1977.pdf) but I cannot find any information on this version of the ALR-45. If any one of our community F-14 crews can clarify any ways to interpret or properly find ways to use this system, I would like to know! Thank you!
  5. I can't seem to find the thread I last read but this is not the case. According to what I've read, the devs have stated - and maybe they can chime in on this themselves - that the current limitations in the DCS engine do not support true AIM-54 limitations. Apparently, if not commanded by the AWG-9, it will NOT go pitbull. Sorry everyone, wish I could find the thread but I am having trouble sifting through the search results.
  6. Does anyone have good tacview tracks of defeating well-fired AIM-54s? My friends and I have been doing a lot of F-14 and F-15 DACT recently and we've got to the point where we can notch AIM-54A mk60s launched from ~6000' and 15 nm, another launched at 6-8 nm from a similar altitude but the third one always seems to be the killer if fired between 3-5 nm. It is close enough that it has lots of energy but also far away enough that unless you're beaming going Mach 0.9, it can still turn and hit. Maybe there's a way of maneuvering I am missing that could shake this large missile at that range? I cannot upload my own tacviews now as I am at work. But if needed, I can do so on the weekend.
  7. Oh really? Perhaps I did not look hard enough. I had assumed views were universal
  8. Is this the same issue that is causing my bindings to work only in the front cockpit but not the back? I was doing my best to bind my views and zoom controls to the T16000 HOTAS set as usual, but I noticed that the hat switch, center view button and zoom controls only work from the front and do not respond in the back. Furthermore, I usually bind head translation controls to the keypad but even those keyboard bindings do not function from the rear seat.
  9. I was on the Cold War Server the other day and the mission was restricted to certain weapons - no R-60M, R-3R or AIM-9P5. I was fighting against a MiG-21bis and noticed that he fired a missile while I was about 90 degrees relative to his flight path (I was in burner the whole time). From what I gather, there should have been no tone to begin with, and even if there was, it should have gone stupid sometime while I was turning. Is this an error or does the standard R-60 have a limited all-aspect capability? Or perhaps the missiles can track head on even while I am in afterburner? I was sure of the missiles we had that day, I would not get hit, yet this happened: Album here: https://imgur.com/a/jzFDDQf
  10. Thank you for the answer! Do you mean to say that more antennae would decrease accuracy? As I understand, you would have identical antennae and they would all be capable of receiving signals from the same bandwidth so you would not be increasing detectable bandwidth anyway from adding more of the same antenna. Did I misunderstand? So I gather it's more of a practical thing rather than being physically impossible. I also thought to myself yesterday that the 4 antennae are the minimum number you need as you can easily bank 90 degrees and determine attitude from there.
  11. While we're on the topic of warning equipment, why is it that there is no altitude indication (i.e. the transmitter is above or below you) for RWR's? We have the ability to compare radar signal strength in between port and starboard, front and back but why is there no RWR pair for the top and bottom of the aircraft? I have had no luck finding any mathematical derivation for the RWR sorting algorithm or any kind of article for this question online.
  12. Thanks, MadDog! I will try this on the weekend.
  13. This is the first time my game has crashed on startup. I tried restarting, reinstalling and repairing the game. 14. That is something I will have to check. Upgrading soon to an RX580 soon since I found one for cheap. Thing is, I managed ONCE to fly in the Burning Skies server was dogfighting for a full sortie with no issue. The difference is I could hear my tower "spool up" - fans running high RPM which used to happen all the time. Since the last update, the fans don't kick in 99% of the time and therefore DCS does not work. Is this RAM-related? Or something more sinister?
  15. DCS has been a nightmare for me recently. It hangs at every screen if I try to join multiplayer - first at the menu only for about 1 minute, then if I join any server, the loading screen for 10 mins and then the splash screen for another 5 mins and then it either joins the server (rarely) at which point it freezes at the aircraft list indefinitely or it returns to the menu. This did not happen last month when I played very little due to frame rate issues but today, I only managed to enter an aircraft once. At which point my screen froze indefinitely again. Specs: windows 10 64 bit, intel® core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.4 GHz (8 CPUs), 8 GB of RAM, AMD radeon
  16. Ah yes, sorry it slipped my mind that it was a turbofan. Thanks for the info
  17. Thanks, I'll be sure to read on your information in the other thread later. However, conventional turbojet engines actually do not always create more net thrust with speed. The momentum change from air in to exhaust gases out decreases with velocity, but can increase again with proper design so the thrust vs. velocity is usually of a bathtub shape. But I guess that's what you mean by the thrust line being simplified. It only seems to show the increase.
  18. Correct me if I'm wrong but does that turn rate diagram show full afterburner? The most commonly published wet thrust given for the RM8A is ~26,000 lbf = 11,800 kgf but only 10,000 kg is shown. The remaining 1,800 kgf seems like too much to forget about.
  19. I agree. An F-4E Block 48 (which has slats, TISEO and AGM-65A capability :)) would fit the most scenarios. It flew combat missions in Vietnam, with Iran, Israel and was loved by pilots who used to fly the hard-wing Phantom. It could even be used in Desert Storm scenarios. And I would also fly any Phantom, but I feel that the above version is the definitive variant.
  20. I'm down! I'm still in the process of moving and getting internet at my new place but send me a PM. I should be back online after work hours by next week. GMT -5hrs (ET US).
  21. I love how this thread never dies. It's been almost two years of us spamming for this legend! :megalol:
  22. I believe all radar sets use the doppler effect to a degree. Only the as-advertised pulse doppler radars actually use the doppler effect as a filter. Let me explain: Radar uses light waves and because light waves move from the radar into the air, they change 180 degrees in phase upon incidence with a medium of higher density (an aircraft). It stands to reason that if an aircraft is beaming the detecting aircraft, the phase change of some of the reflected light will destructively interfere with the incident light (see diagram below). When an aircraft is moving away or towards the detecting radar however, the doppler effect causes a frequency shift in addition to the phase shift from reflection. Therefore, the crests and peaks of the reflected and new incident waves do not line up and cannot completely destructively interfere. Of course, this is negating the effect of wave modulation which is how most modern radar sets avoid this problem as well as jamming and interference from other friendly emitters. Modern pulse doppler radars actually use the doppler effect to filter out anything with a frequency shift smaller than a certain threshold whereas older radars do not have this capability.
  23. I'll definitely have to call the F-86 unsuccessful then because it was subsonic during the wars it fought in the 1960's. I'm just going to forget about the fact that it fought in the Korean war in 1950. I'll also forget that the Spitfire XIV could catch up to a 109K at most altitudes and out maneuver it and fly further despite it entering service way before the 109K. I'll forget that the Spitfire IX was built specifically to win parity with the Fw 190A which it did (thereby succeeding in its primary role). You win.
  24. That's quite a bold statement. The Spitfire is the epitome of a successful design with over 22,000 built and with an adaptable airframe that could do a lot and be modified endlessly. Recall the Spitfire XIV entered service in January of 1944, well before the P-51D, P-38L and at a similar time as the late 109G models. It is very fast indeed. The Mk. IX is a 1942 aircraft although our example is an uprated one. There a lot of Mk IX's around late in the war so they were just upgraded. Saying the Spitfire is a failed design because an older version is what we have takes all that out of context. It's like saying the F-15 is a failed design as a modern fighter because it isn't a stealth aircraft.
  25. Forgive me if I haven't searched hard enough but I do not see the Spitfire in my Kickstarters backed projects section. See the attached image. I don't see the option to "request Key". My computer's been very uncooperative so I can't embed the image from imgur. http://imgur.com/a/jbTMl EDIT: NEVERMIND I'M SILLY I FOUND IT. DCS E-shop page. Derp.
