I am going to hijack a bit, how big deal is DFR? Quest Pro is the most affordable DFR capable headset. Quest 3 however beats it on every other metric expect DFR and local dimming and is half the price.

What are the best VR headsets (for DCS) on the market right now?
ssg replied to Buckeye23's topic in Virtual Reality
I have been looking upgrading Q2 to something else and I have looked into pretty much every headset. Top ones are not in any particular order. Varjo Aero Quest Pro Pimax Crystal Each one of these has their own advantages and disadvantages. There is not a singular best one, it depends what is important to you. Pimax Crystal seems to be the king of the hill, but for folks in EU it is extremely expensive compared to the competition. There is also Quest 3, but it does not support DFR so it is not good fit for DCS. However if you are willing to for go that feature and are on budget it is the best choice easily. Some people even say it is better than Varjo Aero but I am bit sceptical about that. Older gen headsets like G2, Index etc. all lose to Q3 in every metric. However if you are unsure about VR or just want to try it out without big commitment second-hand G2s are cheap and it is excellent headset. I am personally leaning towards Quest Pro. It is decently priced, good overall, only major downside is the compression. Pimax Crystal is double the price compared to Aero or QPro here in Europe. Varjo seems to have dropped support for Aero. There are still no local dimming or reprojection which could come in handy on heavier missions. It also has abysmal vertical fov. Somnium V1 seems interesting but there is literally zero information about its pricing and real specs. Like we see with Crystal the specs on paper can be very different than in reality. -
Looks like no pre-order for Steam users.

Has anyone figured out what is causing the freezing when using Turbo mode on OpenXR with Quest 2? I have spent few hours changing every possible setting and nothing seems to help. The performance increase turbo mode offers is pretty incredible. I would love to get it to work.

RTX 3090 24G versus 4080 16G or AMD 7900XTX 24GO
ssg replied to CougarFFW04's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I think you missed the point. Optimizing ram now for 5800x3D would be mostly waste of time and money. Getting 64Gb(or even 32Gb) DDR4 set optimized for 3D is tempting option, but depending on performance of Zen4 3D cached CPUs it could be terrible idea. It is most likely more cost efficient just wait for performance tests of those CPUs and upgrade to Zen4 and DDR5 rather than get DDR4 that might give slight performance boost as temporary solution. Especially considering there won't be better CPU for this socket so this upgrade path is already dead. -
Quest 2 Users, I improved my FPS 75% with one OTT setting I never knew about
ssg replied to Fuggzy's topic in Virtual Reality
Even with 3080 10Gb after combining this method with this reddit posts tip I gained small performance boost. It isn't huge, under 10 fps on F16 Marinaras Free Flight, but it is something. It now rarely dips to under 60 on that scenario where as before it even dipped to below 50. -

5800x3D and 32Gb of RAM. The ram was specced to be optimal for 5600x (Mhz, Ranks, CL). I haven't checked if 5800x3D would benefit from different specs on RAM and frankly I don't feel like getting another set of DDR4 when DDR5 is right around the corner when I do my next CPU upgrade. -

Can't say that there was any difference at least not on Marinaras Free Flight F16 on 5800x3D and 3080 10Gb. I will leave it in and see if I notice any changes. I could probably see very minor like 1 fps difference if I measures with CaptureX -
RTX 3090 24G versus 4080 16G or AMD 7900XTX 24GO
ssg replied to CougarFFW04's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I bought it and after 2 weeks of testing I returned it. My 3080 10Gb gets better performance generally. XTX solved the frame drop issue I have with this card but other than that it performed worse. I would avoid AMD for now for VR. -
If you're running a 7900XT(X)...
ssg replied to EightyDuce's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I ran my XTX 10 minutes on 3D Mark Speedway test. Hotspot never reached above 86c. I still decided to sell it. Subpar VR performance and recent announcement of DLSS support made me decide to get rid of it now rather than wait for fine wine and/or FSR support from DCS. -

This however does not prove that it will be fixed or when it will be fixed. Better skip XTX until the fix materializes for now. -

5800x3D and 32Gb of RAM. I also have 3080. It works better than 7900 XTX. Heck, even 3060 Ti I had for a while worked better. The issue is XTX and/or AMD drivers. Reddit.com/r/AMD has several threads complaining about the issue. There are some indication it is just driver issue not hardware so there is some hope it will be fixed. As for now I would avoid XTX for VR. It is fantastic however for 3440x1440 resolution and non-vr applications which is shame. Only issue with 3080 now that fps death by VRAM has been fixed is frame time spikes. If I could get rid of those I would be pretty happy with that card. -

Let me know how your experience is. I have XTX and Quest 2. I have been trying to make VR playable with this card, but it is impossible. Well, depends what you are doing. Instant actions with solid 72 fps are fine. Multiplayer like Enigmas is just impossible without ASW and ASW on AMD cards does not work. 3080 with ASW is much much smoother experience than 7900 XTX. -

Sadly ASW on AMD just makes it different flavor of stuttering where as on Nvidia ASW is pretty smooth and usable. Few posters have pointed out that AMD never fixed this issue for 6000-series so I guess I will return this card and see if 4080 ever drops to near 1200 euro here. -

Does anyone know if older radeons like 6900XT have horrible blur when looking sideways and moving head when limiting fps to for example 45 or 55 @90hz on VR? Maybe it is driver problem and could be fixed by AMD. I can get solid 45 or even 55 on most missions like Enigma on 7900XTX but due to microstuttering blur it is completely unplayable. Only setting I have found out that has no blur is when fps is same as refresh rate. Even if I get solid 90 and then limit it to 45 to avoid frame drops it starts to blur. So annoying. 45 fps would be just fine for me. -

Thanks, this fixed the big stutters mostly. Now I have an issue where I get blur like effect when I look to the sides or move my head. I guess these are like real microstutters? Anyway, it makes everything blurry when in motion. I played on Enigmas and Liberation mission. XTX fixes 2 issues I have with 3080, screen tearing/spikes and big stuttering when looking outside. If I can fix this weird motion blur like effect I think I will keep XTX for VR use. I honestly can't see properly after taking VR headset off because of that blurr effect. It makes my eyes bleed. -

I guess it all comes down to price. 3090 Ti is about 1100 to 1300 euro here. 3090 around 900 to 1000 euro. XTX being 1200 euro and at least for now it is easily available everyday 17:00 GMT+3 from AMD.com it is pretty tempting choice. Does anyone with 7900XTX have access to 3090? I would love to see some direct comparisons. -

I did another test with Marinaras replay posted here. 5800X3D, 32Gb RAM, SSD, 3080/7900XTX, Quest 2 https://imgur.com/a/ebjtdLF 7900 XTX performs quite a lot better than 3080 on low CPU scenarios. Even the VR performance is quite a lot better. Very nice upgrade for flat screen definitely and on paper for VR too. There is however issue with VR. Unless the FPS is same as display refresh rate like in the beginning of Marinaras replay, moving head is stuttery mess. There is certain amount of stuttering even with 3080, but it is so smooth that you don't really notice it unless you are looking for it. ASW also does not work with AMD currently(has it ever?) so it can not be used to get rid of the stuttering either. What worries me is the high CPU scenarios where there is barely any difference between 3080 and 7900XTX. Servers like Enigma or missions like Liberation both are very CPU heavy. Drivers also might be an issue and if you are believer of fine wine theory AMD might get better. It is however quite a bit risk to bet on that. I honestly don't know if I should keep this or not. 7900 XTX is 1200 euro, 4080 is 1500 euro and 4090 is 2300 euro here. 1200 is pretty much the limit I am willing to pay for GPU. While 4080 might be better for VR, I am not willing to pay that price. -

ssg replied to xoxen's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I finally got my 7900 XTX. I ran the Plazmas test also, but on F14. 5800X3D, 32Gb RAM, SSD, 3080/7900XTX, Quest 2 The DCS settings are what I have settled for 3080 and Quest 2. I haven't played around with them yet. https://imgur.com/a/hWFhwYv Pretty disappointing. I was expecting that VR performance is not good, but this card is not good on flatscreen either. I also tested Arma 3, there too this card performed worse than 3080. I suspeced that my card is not functionin properly, but I ran 3D Mark and I got above average score for this card so it is fine. The frametimes on graph seem more stable on 7900XTX, but in practice it was stuttery mess. Everytime you turn your head it just stutters. On 3080 there is no stutters. -

ssg replied to xoxen's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I got XTX for 1200 euro from AMD directly. Cheapest available 4080 is 1500 euro and cheapest 4090 is 2300 euro here. If I were flatscreen gamer I think XTX would be obvious choice with these prices. VR however makes things bit different. According to tests from the site that was posted above XTX loses to even 3080 in VR. I don't know how that translates to DCS. I will need to figure out some fairly consistent tests to test it myself. The issue could be driver issue, if I remember correctly 6000 series also has bad VR performance on launch but it improved later. You can't really bet on that however. If XTX fixes either of 2 issues I currently have, screen tearing with ASW on or microstuttering when looking to sides with ASW off then I will probably end up keeping it. -

VR Performance against 4080 is bit disappointing. I ordered XTX, we will see if it will we improvement over 3080 10Gb. If nothing else, it has more memory. Compared to the price of 4080 or 4090 here, XTX is pretty good deal. -

I had to try this mission like 20 times before I managed to complete it. Problems I had were either I died, or F5s beelined for bombers and killed them.
