Brunner Force Feedback Joystick Base
kingpinda replied to Mozart's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
1. no but you can make your own standard profile. such as, you can can make a profile and you can say how much spring force you want it to have at each incremention. you need to check the box move back to center or somesuch or else you get a chopper profile where it will act as dry clutches. it will remain in the position where you leave the stick. so its better tahn a standard center spring mode. you can make all these different profiles and you dont need to change cams or springs like you do on the VKB or VIRPIL bases. 2. if you dont want ffb then windows just sees it as a generic usb stick and you can bind y and x axis and all buttons etc. if you do want ffb then you need to install vjoy and be on windows 1808. (this is packaged with the latest software with a read.me) afterwards in order to have ffb work instead of the cls-e stick you have to bind the vjoy axes. yes you can play elite with it. i play star citizen with mine. 3. forces are strong enough to keep stick in center. but if you use a warthog metal stick and 12 cm alluminium extension like i do and fly helicopters where you trim the cyclic so it has a new center very off center then the stick dips a bit because of the weight. so i trim cyclic and then trim a bit back up with normal trim to have it keep is new center where i want it. gonna buy a lighter stick from virpil. 4. it works but its a bit rough around the edges. just flashed new firmware and i got rid of ghost hardware trim binds which kept messing things up. altough when i open the profile again it still looks like all the binds are not bound, they are in fact bound. one frustrating problem is that the option to hardware bind cyclic trim appears to be missing. just trim up,down, righ, left and reset trim are present. luckily i still have it active in my helo profile. I even got ffb working today with cliffs of dover. with latest software and firmware i should have been able to select emulate usb connection as sim connection but that seems not to work. I got a workaround from the boys at brunner: Close CLS2Sim Open CLS2Sim installation folder. Open Settings folder Open connection.stx with editor. Find line with "APP_VJOY_FORCE_ENABLE_AXES" in next line set <boolean>false</boolean> to <boolean>true</boolean> Save and close.n Open CLS2Sim and select DCS Beta as Sim. vJoy axes will move. ffb in cliffs of dover is very rough around the edges. also some violent shaking had to fight the stick on mission start. going to the edges of the stick movement it stopped. had to put ffb to 10 percent in the profile. in DCS ffb is very very cool. only used it with the f-14 and p-51d both work great. no shake with weapons fire though. but stall/buffet etc works. tighter with speed i havent noticed. i dont know if the old software conveyed it well. need to try again. tried the su27 as well but was rough at the edges. probably because its an older module. also the boys at brunner will be closed for 2 weeks during vacation break so i probably have to be content with this :) luckily i had the old base soldered so its compatible with the virpil mongoost50cm2 stick which i will hopefully get not too long from now. -

Hmm I recall having some blocking messages as well but they dissapeared. Have you chosen the correct grip in the profile and have you enabled Ffb in dcs itself? It's not working 100 percent with me though The hardware trim buttons don't persist In the profile but they do work. But I can't remove them anymore. So I have to deal with trim reset on my Warthog weapon selection button. Have you cycled power on the device? -

Yeah I am expecting that but it would be an awsome surprise if they made it an axis. BTW i just flew the P51-D with FFB!!! that has been ages with my old logitech G940. And now finally again with the Brunner :) Dont be an idiot like me though and follow the instructions to the letter and then spending an hour cranking up the FFB to 100 percent and noticing nothing. only to realize that i might have to turn on FFB in DCS itself lol. You can feel the wheels hitting the deck. it will shake with buffet/stall. so you know when you are at the limit of your flight envelope. Still experimenting with the forces on the surfaces to have the stick be stiffer though at higher speeds. The last one is not FFB but the software reads out the speed and sets the springs stiffer or looser accordingly. But all in all this beta FFB is great progress! -

Let me know how it feels! I just missed preorder window for the mongoost50cm2. Brunner told me that all buttons will work with the new Base. Although they didn't answer.me if the analog brake pedal would devolve into a digital button. Not a deal breaker but would be cool if the pedal would be analog. Edit: the beta Ffb has gone public and if we Download the latest version of cls2sim then it's in. Just stick shaking and load scaling with speed for now though. -

Cool Jameslockridge. Yeah received an email if I was experienced with soldering. So might do it myself. Do you know though if all buttons will work on the mongoost50cm2? Hmm I think I'm going to ask them as.well to beta test the Ffb. I hear the tomcat has been getting regular Ffb updates. Also the p51 has Ffb Implemented I think. -

I just received word from brunner that the "old" bases indeed had some incompatibility issues with virpils new sticks. I want to replace my Warthog with the mongoost50cm2 and remembered your story. So I asked if they got it working yet. They said that I could use an old stick or send the Base back so they can upgrade the bases hardware. So its a hardware problem. Virpil sent a courier once to repair my device free of charge from Belarus. Waiting on a reply what costs if any I can expect for servicing my one month old brunner cls-e Base. -

We do too :) there may come a time when i need to ditch my extension when FFB gets properly implemented in DCS. The base is perfect for a sidestick. for a center stick you either need a extension or seriously need to chop up your playseat and stuff. the base is big and supposed to recess in a desk or board. without extension it would need to sit between your legs to be able to use properly for center stick. I really have to think that through to make it comfortable. When i used the Logitech G940 i still flew behind my desk and the stick on top in front of the screen with the deadmans grip taped off. It didnt bother me then but now that i have build my own seat it will be harder to implement. I love flying helo with it though. and I know i will get it right someday :) -

Hi there, I just uploaded it to profile cloud beta. its the DCS helicopter test profile. actually when trimming the chopper alot you keeping changing the center and so the forces arent that great around center. which keeps temp down. i tested the profile dry first and holding prolonged at extremities without trimming gets the temp up rapidly but in normal flight this isnt the case. during the dry testing i did get it to 50 degrees or so but that wasnt realistic and would probably not occur while handling it in game. I just needed to get it strong enough that it wouldnt dip too much if trimmed quite away from center. the heft of the extension and stick would make it drop but i got it quite right now for my setup. if your setup is lighter you might want to decrease the hydraulics a bit or decrease the Force Curve. tell me how it works for you. if you would I'd like to test your profile as well. -

Thanks mate. That was what I found as well. Yeah that is room temperature. I figure there are some safeguards in place. My profile is keeping node 1 at 32degrees celcius right now. I think it will work out. -

Heloguy can you tell me where you read that about the temp? Mine is more running at 40/50 degrees Celsius. I really need an extension for center mount. I never read anything about keeping temp in check. It lowers force slightly automatically but that's not enough? -

@ jameslockridge You mean when the base is holding thne stick in the center or if its limp? When in the center yeah it makes a bit of noise as well. I usually disconnect it in the software and the stick goes limp. Then it doesnt make a sound. @TacoGrease No not yet. It acts as a normal spring stick at the moment wihtout force feedback. Although I use the hardware trim which works like a charm. -

im experimenting with my warthog stick and 12 cm alluminium extension. its quite a heavy combination though and although it hits 4 NM on the axis limits with my profile at the moment, it lowers the forces when the stick reaches 60 degrees celcius. with my profile thats quite fast. hold at deflection limit at 3.6 NM and you see the temp rising. 6 seconds or so at you hear a click and you feel forces are lower. 2.6 nm for instance. at which the stick jump to axis limit because forces are lower and my hand was still pushing it. Gitnick you might want to start out without extension. I just disconnected the software and i threw the limp stick from side to side. man its heavy! the hardware has been doing a great job keeping the stick with extension in its position! it doesnt help either that the warthog stick isnt as balanced. its heavier towards the left. Gonna fiddle some more because i want to be able to make a profile that when trimmed it wont dip a bit but keep the device from overheating at deflection limits. I flew the huey though and obviously i fly with lower force. Felt great. but i need alot more testing. I might decide though to lose the extension and get a better directer response from the device. if that is the case i have to figure out ofcourse. edit: trying to understand relation between force strength and hydraulics still but im narrowing in a profile which i like. had to increase backlash deadzone to stop stick from oscilating but forces seem strong enough for realistic chopper flight. even with this heavy combo. might have to decrease curve more and put in more hydraulics/damping to minimize dropping when trimmed off center. even have a profile now that is a bit to strong for chopper fligh. -

My brunner just arrived. Speedy shipment. Just took a bit before it was send but I was notified of the shipping date. Just didnt took into account that Zwitserland isnt in the European Union... so had to pay 21% taxes on top... taxes alone was Almost as much for what I payed for my mfg crosswinds lol. Have to regain Some points with the missus lol so we are going to the Ikea now. -

Yeah i really wanted to look at reviews about the brunner base itself. not how to mount it. Those were the only vids I found sadly. How to mount the freaking things lol. Yeah you know. Noone knows what this thing is or how it performs but hey! here's how you mount it lol. I'll probably stick with wood. This is my simpit. I did change some bits from time to time. Like a second screen for helios panels etc. Those aren't implemted on below link though: https://imgur.com/gallery/EJMYA4V -

Yeah I know.. I've been lurking youtube for months on end. But Noone has a video of it. Just how to mount it. Unfortunately I am not really youtube material. I might put something up by recording with my phone if I get around it. -

Cool. I figured as much but you can't be too sure. Thanks for checking if its possible mate. Once I get my vacation money I'll be ordering a brunner device. -

You are describing Cyclic/helicopter trim though or i might not completely understand your explanation. When trim button is pressed hydraulics release and cyclic becomes limp. you can then change position of cyclic and let go of trim. hydraulics kick in and thats your new center. In a plane like the A10-C or any other fighter plane, you trim with a trim hat. you push hat up and it trims down. So you hold stick pitch down with force. then press trim hat up and let go when pressure is gone. your stick will be moved forward and stay there in its new center. Also useful when useing asynchronous pilons. you just dropped some bombs from the left wing. so your right wing will dip in older aircraft(newer aircraft will trim compensate). so you try and fly horizontally by pushing stick left a bit to compensate and then push trim hat lef(airelons) untill pressure is gone from stick. I dont know all the different trims in DCS pseudo or not. But basically there are 2 proper trim systems. cyclic trim (one button plus reset) plane trim (trim hat plus reset) and maybe some dials for rudder trim as well. I believe you can make profiles with the brunner device to simulate both. @Berniyh can you confirm this? -
Ranma13 Yeah im following him like a hawk :)

Ranma13 thanks for putting your time into this. I was on the fence to buy this device when I get my tax return or wait 6 months to see where Brunner would be with its implementation. But I most probably will buy it sooner rather than later due to your efforts. Hopefully Brunner will get this thing up and running how it should in the future but untill that time comes I can rely on your coding skills to get me going. Berniyh thanks to you as well. I love flying helo's in DCS and i havent done some serious helo flying since I swapped my logitech G940 for the Warthog HOTAS. Knowing a fellow rotorhead is very pleased with this device gives me hope. I never could get used to 'return stick to center' after trim after I flew the black shark with ffb for ages. -
Brunner CLS-E joystick can fit warthog stick and virpil sticks. But for DCS at this moment you will be stuck with hardware ffb trim and set up a 'spring' strength profile. Hopefully one of these days Brunner will write a plugin so actual software ffb can be send and felt in the stick. They only have profiles for fsx, xplane and the like. something to do with that they dont use directx but their own special driver.

Brunner responds very Swiftly to mails. Q2 for dcs is probably a bit too optimistic the rep told me. He Also answered my question about Axis limits via software: Hi Kingpinda DCS Support is planned. But Q2 is probably a bit optimistic. I would say Q3 or even Q4. Careful! Except forces changing with airspeed, the initial release won't have much more —features. We'll try to add features, but I can't promise anything at this point. If you want the joystick mainly for DCS, my tip is to wait and see how the situation develops. b) Yes, Software limits can be set. But they are limited by motor strength, so the limit can only be felt moderately and can easily be overpowered. The CLS-P joystick has distinctly more juice, but is in a whole other price range. Hi there, I have been looking at this base with some interest as well. Instant buy if they support DCS FFB. If they wont as of now i could do with the hardware trim for helos and such but can any of the owners of this device tell me if it is possible to limit certain axis? I fly with a 12 cm extension and I would love to see that I can limit pitch down for ergonomic reasons. Also quite some planes have less travel in the pitch down region. The total deflection of the brunner base is quite larger than the warthog and virpil base so it would be cool to set up profiles with different ranges. WWII crates could have huge deflection but helos and or fighter planes usually have less deflection. Id love to hear if this is possible with the brunner software. thanks in advance. -
i have this problem in 2.53 edit: uhm disregard. i was updating but i lost power and i think im not updated as of now.

ah shoot i was on the fence but yeah its sold out... I'll bookmark this page. can you make a mailing list for when you will do the next batch? Im a patient guy. I mean ... i got a MFG crosswind :)
