Agreed. Unfortunately, If there's no change to the way it works natively, I simply will not be submitting my work. I refuse to use SPECs anymore. Especially since it doesn't work correctly. And the file , even if you alter it, will be replaced again when you install any update. So that's about it for SPECs for me. Especially since this is for a paid only product that only purchasees can see to begin with. Roughmets should be adopted.

No. They must be placed in the Coremods folder where the core texture zip folder or just folder resides. If you're using specs, DELETE the json together. However, note that the skin will not work in Multiplayer. ED still needs to fix that. If you enable Roughmets via the described prices, specs will no longer work. At all.

I've deleted mine. But I don't think you need to. Once you place the files in a folder named the same as the core texture zip file, the sim will only recognize Roughmets from there on out. The trick is that you have to name them (for now, until ED makes them native) the same name as the DIFFUSE Texture name with the addition of "_Roughmet" at the end. So like "Texturename_D_Roughmet.dds". This lets the sim see the Roughmet.

Beautiful work! Sadly, yes. In order to make speculars work correctly, you need to either edit or simply DELETE the Model's JSON file. Honestly, that JSON file is old and not needed. Get rid of it and your specs will shine. Literally. This is part of the reason why ED should just implement Roughmets. Get Mega to donate his. Because otherwise everytime you update the sim, the file is replaced. Rendering all the Specs to the old way.

It's actually not too different that if you were to update it to RM format it would prob only be a slight variation of what you have now. Just really make those Red Channels white. There is an AO in the paint kit in one of the layers but it's baked the bottom side. I think what ever you do it will look good! Let's see some WIPs!

Thanks! I'm using Roughmets. I've been talking to 9L in DM's. But no I was not aware of that response! I"m going to keep this how it is. It will not be modified to use SPECs. So if need be, I'll just not enter the competition. I'm ok with that. I think the only real solution, is to have Roughmets implemented. Yes, it will break the B-17s in some of the Campaigns. Yes, those can be replaced with stand ins until they can be updated. And yes, the default skin already has a great RM made by Megalax which could be used (I'm guessing he'd just hand it over). But honestly, if they break, how much worse will they actually look? IMHO, RM is the way to go. Take the band aid off right now. And move forward with all these new liveries. Update the old ones. Just do it.

Because you asked nicely, I'm happy to provide more WIP shots. I figure people like to see work happening. Those who don't. Oh well. Let's not let this thread get highjacked. I'm excited to see more B-17 Liveries from the rest of you! It's finally going to get some love! I'm especially waiting on Helles Bell to show his work! So many!

I'm well aware of that. That's what I did already. If ED does switch to RM officially then ALL the paints will be obsolete that used the current JSON file. if they don't want to switch to RM, then they need to remove the JSON file in order to get proper functioning SPEC files. Those were options for them to consider. We've been talking to 9L behind the scenes. Thanks. Correct. No interest is using a broken system to perpetuate a broken system. The entire point of the conversation is NOT have to use a work around for the majority of players in order to get it to work correctly.

DCS: WWII Assets Pack - B-17G Livery Competition
Mach3DS replied to NineLine's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Just a thought....hear me out. If the stock model uses a obsolete JSON file, wouldn't it be better to hold off on a livery competition that will yield more Liveries that will all break if you ever incorporate Roughmets officially? I use the term "break" lightly since the materials look really wierd as it is. Why not just just incorporate Roughmets? Then run the competition? At minimum deleting that JSON file would technically break existing skins. But because the file is already faulty it wouldnt really break things....then at least you could use SPECS and create something decent without needing to use work around. Just a thought. -

Megalax informed me that Roughmets will work using the method we've used on other products that lack RMs. If we use this method will ED consider it valid? Regardless I'm going to use it and I'll recreate my lost works. This is from 10 mins of messing around with the default stock skin. This is what I think you were hoping for. Just to highlight that the current JSON file inhibits this with SPEC files. -

I would love to, but the JSON file in its current form inhibits proper functioning of the gfx. You can't make it look metal for example. ED should consider deleting this file for proper use of Spec files, if you're not going to officially transition to Roughmets. It would improve the visual quality and the materials wouldn't look messed up when applying what would normally work for other paints. .02
