  1. In a general sense, I've found that denying a launch in the first place has been my best hope of MANPAD survival. If I know there are MANPADs in the area I'll switch to Manual countermeasures in mode "M" (1 flare per second) and start releasing when running in (that is, when running in on a bomb or gun run, or any time I'm down in their engagement envelope). Of course, I'm not sure what to do then if a missile IS launched at me... Switch over to mode "C"? This doesn't really give any good easy answers to your post, Arteedecco, but maybe it's a kind of philosophy that pilots can use: Deny launch in the first place, by doing these: 1. Flying higher than the MANPAD engagement altitude, if SAM situation permits, 2. Using terrain masking to keep your flight away from known threats, 3. Using pre-emptive flares (one per second with Mode "M") to deny lock when unable to do the first two. If they do manage to launch on me I typically do a descending break into (toward) the missile to put it on my beam (directly off to my left or right) while dumping flares. I do this because I don't want to point the back of my engines at the missile: the MANPAD missile will be IR and that would give it a pair of nice big bright hot engines to look at! Instead I'll give it my front, which is cooler. As I continue my turn I'm also showing the missile the bottom of my plane which is where my flares are coming from. This way I'm putting flares between me and the missile, hopefully helping the missile lose me. The geometry of the turn also helps: by turning toward the missile I'm making it turn harder to stay on an intercept course. Hopefully this will bleed energy from the missile and make it less maneuverable for the next step: If it's still guiding on me I'll do a climbing break into the missile again as it arrives at me (if I still have visual). Hopefully it doesn't hit. It's certainly not foolproof, but... At least it gives me a fighting chance. --NoJoe
  2. Just to be pedantic: it's not more thrust that equals lift, it's more airspeed. Thrust is simply the force from your engines pushing you forward. Airspeed is your speed through the air. That's what makes lift! Sorry, couldn't help myself. :D --NoJoe
  3. Yes yes yes! Eagle Dynamics, you guys are legendary! I really appreciate all the effort and time spent both on the sim and here on the forums. It's great to see ED team members asking and answering questions, and to see all the work that goes in to perfecting the sim itself. Your love of flight simulation is very apparent! :joystick: --NoJoe
  4. Haha, I had exactly that happen to me last week (in the sim...). I was cruising along on a mission when an SA-11 popped up on my RWR, then launched a few seconds later. "[Expletive deleted] [Expletive deleted]" I said, put the site on my 3 o'clock, and dove for the ground like a madman, throttles firewalled! I was flying at around 6,000 and only 230 knots or so with a full load, so diving to pick up speed was my only hope. Looking out to the right I picked up 4 or 5 smoke trails that had left the ground maybe 10 miles away, and were arcing over toward me. Zero relative motion on the canopy, so they were definitely tracking! It all happened pretty fast, and by the time I glanced forward to check speed then glanced back to the right, all 4 or 5 missiles smacked neatly into the ground a few miles away. Phew! I pulled throttles back to idle to avoid an overspeed and brought the nose back up, leveling out around 1,000 feet. "Tweeeee Tweeeeee!" went the Missile Launch Warning System. "Huh?" *BOOM* Igla! --NoJoe
  5. F7 is the key to view ground units. F6 views weapons in flight. Not that it solves your problem, but... Just to avoid confusion. :D --NoJoe
  6. Oh, I just realized: if you're renaming the markpoints, you'll have to add them to a flight plan. I think? It doesn't make sense to me that the above procedures I listed aren't working for you... Hmm... I'll go check in the sim right now and see if I can figure out what's going on. Also, got a track? :D --NoJoe [EDIT] Okay well, I tried messing around with it, and the steps I listed in my last post work for me, at least. Maybe the trouble has something to do with renaming the Mark Points. That might be putting them into a flight plan. Or something. I don't know; I got confused when I tried renaming mine, so I just leave my markpoints with the default "A", "B", etc. :P Hope this helps... Somehow. :)
  7. Right, and Mr. GGTharos just said on the previous page (two posts before yours): "Either way known and being worked on. :) " :D --NoJoe
  8. Just tested it, and yes they do! Batumi gave me "39.71" and Senaki gave me "39.68" only a couple seconds later. Cool! --NoJoe [EDIT] Ooops, I totally forgot to write down the winds they gave me. Batumi gave me 180 at 2, and Senaki gave me 172 at 2.
  9. What if the actual pressure is 31.03... Will the tower tell us "4103"? :P Great, though, that the tower tells us 4 digits now! Yaaaay progress! --NoJoe
  10. Make sure you set SPI to Steerpoint, by TMS Aft long. You'll then see "STPT" in the lower left corner of the HUD. Then you can do China Hat Forward long to slave all sensors to the SPI (which will now be the steerpoint). And as you cycle steerpoints, your Mavericks and Targeting Pod will both automatically slave to each markpoint as you cycle through them.* The steps you can follow are this: 1. Mark your potential targets with markpoints using the TGP, as you've been doing. Name the markpoints if you want. Otherwise you can just use the default "A", "B", etc. 2. Set the CDU switch to "Mark", like you did. 3. Set SPI to Steerpoint by TMS Aft long. Verify you see "STPT" in the lower left of the HUD. 4. Slave all sensors to SPI by China Hat Forward long. Your Mav should slew to the currently selected Markpoint. 5. Step through markpoints with the rocker switch on the left of the Up Front Controls (UFC), and watch as the Mav slews to each new markpoint. 6. With Mav as the Sensor of Interest, press TMS forward short to lock, and fire! :D --NoJoe *This is because the airplane automatically sets the currently selected markpoint as the steerpoint.
  11. Pinky Switch Aft (so you can control the lights manually via the instrument panel), then adjust the light knobs to your liking. I believe each of the lights you mention have their own adjustment knob, though the nacelle floodlights knob is over by the refueling panel rather than with the rest of the lights. --NoJoe [EDIT] Gah, sniped! :D
  12. Hahaha, that's awesome. :) This is why I both love and hate April Fool's day. ;) --NoJoe
  13. Oops, my apologies, no offense meant to that wonderful plane. Fighting fire with fire, eh? ;) --NoJoe
  14. It's totally that AT-802U Agricultural bird with bombs, isn't it? :P --NoJoe
  15. Oooooh, looks like you're right! :joystick: --NoJoe
  16. I'm still totally voting this all as an April Fools joke. ;) We'll know for sure when http://www.dcsmudhen.com redirects to digitalcombatsimulator.com! Also, http://www.f-18c.com isn't working for me anymore, either. Now they're just teasing us! :P --NoJoe
  17. Ah, gotcha. I'm an idiot! Thanks for the help! --NoJoe
  18. Hmm, I do have a facebook account, and I'm logged in. ... I need to "friend" ED, don't I? --NoJoe
  19. Heh, hrmmm, when I click that link I get: "This content is currently unavailable The page you requested cannot be displayed right now. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page." I guess they're changing it or something right now. --NoJoe [EDIT] But thanks for the help out, anyway, Mastiff! :)
  20. April Fools joke, anyone? :megalol: --NoJoe [EDIT] Also, http://www.facebook.com/eagle.dynamics doesn't have any pics on it... Am I missing something? The other page has just a couple pics of two different A-10 skins. I'm confused. It was mentioned in this thread earlier that they have a "military" photo album. Where is that?
  21. Yeah, that showed up for a bit last night, then was removed. The YouTube link didn't work either, so I guess it was released a bit prematurely. I actually came on the forums just now so I could watch that video, figuring it'd be fixed by now. Oh well. --NoJoe
  22. Or I think you can just TMS aft long, too. Then China Hat forward long, and you've slaved your targeting pod to the steerpoint! :D --NoJoe
  23. Just to hop back on topic: And to be pedantic ( :P ) : "DCS" isn't an entity, it's a product developed by Eagle Dynamics. So a big thank you to Eagle Dynamics, Wags, and all personnel and testers and moderators for their parts in bringing DCS to life! :D --NoJoe
  24. Hahaha, me too! I kept trying to change the SOI with the throttle hat while flying Falcon 4. Confused me for a sec! :megalol: And definitely yes: The whole DCS series is amazing! What ED have done is staggering, both in what they have accomplished with the simulations, as well as keeping the genre alive (and what a job they've done! ). --NoJoe
  25. I'm chuckling that no one seemed to notice or respond to Jim's post on the previous page. :P Sweet. In the mean time, I'm gonna to hose some tanks with Uranium! :joystick: --NoJoe
