  1. I'm running an older Mac Pro with Windows 7 (64 bit), and I've been having great success! And to chime in about the hardware: Yes, definitely more expensive, but the case design is fantastic. I love the plug-in SATA hard drives, for one. If you haven't seen inside a Mac Pro, Apple engineered small brackets that you screw onto the outside of the hard drive. Then you just slide the drive into place on the brackets, and it plugs right into the computer (power and SATA, both). No cords required. I've also been really enjoying the cooling: the case is basically divided into two halves. RAM and CPU on the bottom, PCI cards and hard drives on the top. Combine that with large fans and a flow-through design. It's great; the computer is pretty much silent. There's just a hint of white noise from my video card fan (a regular GTX 460 I stuck in there a few months ago). Anyway, yes. More expensive, but totally worth it. However, that said, for my next computer I will do a regular PC build. Spare cash is a little harder to find these days. ;) --NoJoe
  2. Press and hold one of the lower MFD buttons on the right side (maybe MAV if you're not going to use Mavericks), and select TAD on the screen that comes up.   4. Also if you do spot a missile launch or tracer fire, try to take note of any surrounding landmarks as you turn away. Then once you're at a safe range you can turn back in and begin searching around those landmarks. For example if I see a smoke trail from a SAM I might notice that it's just east of a small town, on the east side of the river, north of that big yellow field. It's a good way to keep track of the general area a threat is in, and makes it easier to find again. Once you gain some distance you can be on the offensive instead of the defensive! :gun_rifle: --NoJoe

  6. I'd guess the reason is: Even though you're willing to risk instability, other users won't be willing to risk it. And then ED would be getting tons of complaints by 32 bit users that the sim is unstable, "poorly programmed", etc. etc. etc. So removing the option guarantees an acceptable level of stability for all, even though this means a sacrifice in visual quality. Again, my guess, but it seems like this is the safer way to go for ED. --NoJoe
  7. Heh, the E-2D has a nice damage model, too. I was testing it by pitting it against Mig-29s. Bwahahaha! :megalol: And another really cool thing! After it lands and leaves the runway, it folds its wings back against the fuselage. Now that would really come in handy on a carrier... Like, DCS Hornet or something... ;) --NoJoe
  8. Heh, I was just doing my first flying around with the new patch, and noticed the ladder. I had landed, taxied off the runway and I opened my canopy. When I came to a stop at an intersection I noticed the ladder was extended! Cool! It seems for now the ladder extends when the canopy is open and the plane is not moving. Change either of those and the ladder retracts. This patch is really awesome! (also my AI wingbuddies are doing much better, JTAC is working smoother now, and those shadows... Ohhh! ) :thumbup: --NoJoe

  10. Make sure the TGP is SOI, then set it as SPI before you try slaving everything to the SPI. You can do this with Coolie Hat long left/right (toward whichever MFD the TGP is on). However, I don't remember the exact procedure off the top of my head... I'll check! :thumbup: --NoJoe [EDIT] Okay, the manual says to make the TGP as the SPI (TMS Forward long), then slave all sensors/AIM-9 to that SPI (China Hat Forward long, or "v" key long). But I cannot manage to set the TGP as SPI when in A/A mode... Hmmmmm! Hmmmmmm! :dunno: --NoJoe

  12. Try Leftshift Y. It's in the "General" category of the controls, under "Info bar view toggle". It took me a while to find it, even with nemises' hints! :thumbup: --NoJoe [EDIT] I just tested it, and it works! It looks like it's a 3 state toggle, too. First is normal info, then expanded info with heading, roll, and pitch. Then off.

  16. I think it's not a shame at all they delayed the patch. Otherwise we'd all be tripping over some annoying bugs. This way we will get a clean patch a little later. I say "Thank you ED for your high quality standards! :thumbup: " --NoJoe [EDIT] Also, it's not the 1.0.0.8 patch that was delayed, it's the 1.1.0.8. We're way past 1.0.0.8. :P Okay, pedantic mode off. ;)
  17. Merijn, It sounds like you may have another axis assigned to the throttle that is at idle, so if it occasionally gets bumped it's telling the sim "No, wait, throttle to idle!" You should carefully go through the control assignments and make sure nothing else is assigned to the throttle other than your X52 throttle. The two things I'd check first are the thumb slider on your X52's throttle (I notice that tends to get defaulted to the throttle in most of my games), and check your pedals, especially if they have a brake axis. --NoJoe

It took me a month to get up and going with the basics: A week to go through the manual, another week to sit in the cockpit, learn the startup and shutdown procedures, and learn the CDU/DSMS/TGP basics, etc. Another week of learning to fly the plane: takeoffs, pattern and landings, plus maneuvers, stalls, emergency procedures, etc. Then a fourth week to start learning the weapons systems and how to employ them, as well as attack profiles, etc. THEN I was ready to take the plane out and start doing some training practice missions. I spent a few weeks going through each weapon system individually, practicing dropping/shooting them on dummy targets. I didn't try my hand at "live" combat until I was at least 2 months in. There's a lot to learn with this beast, but having that solid knowledge of all the systems and procedures made it SOOO rewarding when I finally was able to put it all together! :thumbup: And I still get plenty of practice with emergency procedures, both intentionally and not. :smilewink: --NoJoe

    A-10 Books

    "Warthog Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War" by William L. Smallwood ISBN # 1-57488-886-2 about $9 where you can find it. :D It was a great book, I highly recommend it! I also highly recommend another book of his: "Strike Eagle: Flying the F-15E in the Gulf War". Obviously it doesn't have any A-10s in it, but it was a fascinating look into the lives of the MudHen pilots, and gives some interesting glimpses into the operations and tactics they used. I still need to pick up A-10s over Kosovo for myself; I'm excited to read it! --NoJoe

    64bit?

    It actually installs 64 bit by default. Selecting the 32 bit option tells the installer to install the 32 bit executables in addition to the 64 bit exes. --NoJoe

Just to slightly restate things to make it (maybe) clearer: That's because when you choose a single weapon by clicking its OSB in the DSMS you're telling the A-10 to load up the default profile for that weapon (NOT the profile you changed earlier). If you want the profile you changed earlier, you'll have to select it from the DSMS profile page. :thumbup: --NoJoe
  22. Yes, it sounds like your controller may be a bit too sensitive. I have an X52 Pro that twists for rudder control, and I found adding some curvature helped it. I also added a little deadzone because it's a bit worn out and was giving me trouble. Here's what I set: Curvature of 15 Deadzone of 2 Once you get that set, it sounds like you might just need some practice steering the plane with the NSW/rudders. Ideally if you find yourself on the left side of the runway you want to point your nose only a tiny bit to the right of the centerline. Generally, you just want to keep the plane pointed straight at the far end of the runway. A tiny amount of correction back to the other side will help get you back on centerline, but don't point the jet off the side of the runway to get back there. Just remember to only point the jet as far as the pavement at the other end of the runway. If you find yourself pointing off into the grass, you've overcorrected. And don't overcorrect; that's what is making you veer left and right. Instead, make a small correction, then center the controls and wait a moment to see if it helped. You might even consider making a correction then taking your hand away from the stick momentarily. If you need more, give it another small correction and wait to see if it helps. This is the same technique I teach Real Life pilots who are having trouble with steering a plane on the ground with rudders. Overall I think the Nose Wheel Steering in the sim is just fine. But then again, I've never flown at A-10 in Real Life! :smilewink: --NoJoe
  23. Yes! I teach my students that the only activity they're allowed to do while taxiing the airplane is... taxiing the airplane! All that other stuff (tuning radios, setting courses, checking instruments) can be done once you come to a stop before the runway. Just like driving a car. You wouldn't want to be texting or reading a book while you're driving down the road, would you? ;) --NoJoe
