It sounds like you're missing the step of setting the TGP's line of sight as the SPI (Sensor/System Point of Interest) by pressing TMS forward long while the TGP is the SOI (Sensor of Interest). This tells the A-10's computers that the reference point for bombing, making mark points, and such, is the TGP's line of sight. It sounds like your steps should be: Approach target area at about Angels 10- 15k TGP= SOI Slew to target area (China Hat FWD Long) TGP = SPI with TMS forward long <----- This is the missing step Slew target area with TGP in AREA mode etc... Try it again with that step, and let us know if it works out better. :) --NoJoe

OK ED... Anytime your ready to announce the next aircraft

So, back to the issue at hand; waiting for the next DCS plane... :P While I'm as excited as the rest of you to see what it is, I still have a ways to go with the A-10C. And not to forget the teasers we've gotten of the new CBU-97 modelling! And the more I bury my head in learning the A-10C, the more I love that plane. Sure, a new pointy jet will be exciting. But I want to get *good* with the Hawg. No, wait, not "good"... I want to be AMAZING at flying the Hawg! :D There, a little personal motivation from NoJoe. -
Yes, definitely! The current ME is great! --NoJoe

Ahhh, okay, I see what you mean now. Guess we'll just have to wait for DCS: Fighter. Still, all the stuff I said about what made Falcon's dynamic campaign compelling to me is still valid. :D --NoJoe

At a guess, I think one of the videos at least is demonstrating what's possible when the override switch is thrown. In normal conditions all I can get the BMS Viper to do is a small amount of negative alpha leading to a painful-looking red out. ;) Seems believable to me, at least. --NoJoe [EDIT] Gah, sorry, I just realized we're still in the DCS Dynamic Campaign discussion thread. Sorry for the OT! On topic: I do agree with some of the posters here that a dynamic campaign like Falcon's would be really amazing to have with the fidelity of the DCS sim. I also get the same impression that the campaign with A-10C feels not-real. I know DCS's scripting tools are awesome for creating specific scenarios, especially for training, but I lose my suspension of disbelief in the campaign. I hate to keep comparing things to Falcon, but I want to point out the aspect I really like in Falcon (and the aspect I would love to see in DCS sims) which is: When flying along in the campaign in Falcon, there is a "big picture". The mission is fought in the context of the larger war, which can be seen in the map (other flights flying around, subsequent missions already scheduled, etc.), and while flying the mission itself (the player may pass other flights on their way to their objective). The player is able to participate in larger events. Right now in the DCS sims, all the player gets to see is their one single mission at a time. It makes it feel "smaller". --NoJoe

Yes, you are correct that even if you disable the main radar, the launchers are still capable of launching and guiding their missiles on to you. The SA-11 launchers themselves have radar on them. However, this means they will have a shorter detection range, as the on-board radar on the launcher vehicles is significantly smaller than the large main radar platform. What semi-active radar homing means is that the missiles need something (either the main radar or the smaller radar on each launcher) to "paint", or highlight, the target for them with radar. Basically that the SAM radar locks on to you, and the missiles fly toward the radar energy that is reflected from you. The missiles do not have their own radar. Hope this makes sense; it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet. ;) --NoJoe

Haha, that's the same reaction I just had (I know, I should have noticed the pictures yesterday, but I was out flying for real :P ). I'm really looking forward to exploring this scenery with the A-10! --NoJoe

Just to be clear, this indicator is not related to the AIM-9 missile. It's the MRGS, as others have mentioned, which is a tool for the gun in air-to-air mode. Gun, not AIM-9s. --NoJoe

Heh, don't think of it in terms of having to "sneak things through". If there is a big purchase that you want to make, talk with her about it. Hopefully she'll understand that it's something you really want. And remember this has to work both ways! Whatever you do, DON'T go sneakily buy it in the hopes she doesn't notice or something. That's kind of an un-trustworthy thing to do. They always say communication is one of the keys to marriage. :D My wife chuckles at me when I put on my TrackIR hat, but she understands that looking totally goofy is one of her husband's fun hobbies. Also, congrats on the engagement! Here's to many happy years together (and lots of happy simming). :drink: :joystick: --NoJoe

CONFIRMED: Next aircraft will be a fixed wing US FIGHTER!
NoJoe replied to kingneptune117's topic in Chit-Chat
Very true, and hence the "it doesn't necessarily mean much". I just figured since the thread is moving along on rampant speculation, I might as well throw that one in here too. :D Still, DCS Hornet would be awesome. And so would DCS Mudhen. For that matter, I'd totally buy DCS AT-802U! --NoJoe [EDIT] To add: A boy can dream. [DCS Hornet... sigh] -

There also was that hubbub a while back about http://www.f-18c.com It doesn't necessarily mean much, but do a whois lookup and see who owns that domain. ;) --NoJoe -
... Wow. Speechless. I just love how you Eagle Dynamics guys keep taking the most impressively detailed sim ever, and keep pushing it further and further forward. Freakin' WOW. --NoJoe

And if you want the easy shortcut to this method, just remember: 180 knots = 3 miles per minute 240 knots = 4 miles per minute 300 knots = 5 miles per minute  ( pilots are lazy, we like to do things the easy way! :smilewink: ) --NoJoe

Sweet, good enough for me. Thanks, SlackerD! --NoJoe

Can we get a confirmation on this? If it's true, it explains the last 30 minutes I spent in the sim. If it's not true, then I guess I'm just kinda dumb. :P --NoJoe

It's in the controls as "HOTAS CMS Z Axis", and it's assigned to the "-" (minus) key by default (the one above the letters; not the keypad minus key). It works just like a toggle; press it on to turn the jammer on (in Man or Semi modes), press it again to turn it off. --NoJoe [EDIT] Y'know, I just searched through the manual to double check what I wrote up there, and I cannot find any mention that 1) a CMS Z axis even exists, and 2) that pressing it would enable the jammer. The best the manual mentions in that the jammer can be activated with the CMS switch. But it doesn't say how.. Hrmmm. Well, if I'm wrong about how to turn on the jammer, someone please correct me! :D

As far as flaps go, you just need to remember one airspeed: 185 Knots indicated. Above this airspeed they will auto-retract themselves. Below this airspeed you're good to go. --NoJoe [EDIT] 185 KIAS applies to any amount of flaps, by the way. You can safely go to full flaps the moment you slow below 185 indicated. [/EDIT]

Heh heh, my wife just read that sentence out loud, sounding very incredulous. We really do speak a whole other language in here, don't we? :D SOI, SPI, TGP, MFCD, MAV... Crazy! --NoJoe

Nice! I love the sound of a radial engine... Especially when it's Russian. --NoJoe

Gah, 404ed for me, too. Looks like I copy-pasted the link with the ... in there. Oops! Fixed. But it looks like the A-10 photos got deleted by the moderators. :( Ah well. I'm sure more pics will turn up, probably on airliners.net in a couple more days. --NoJoe [EDIT] Not my pics, but there are several posted on flickr: Here you can see the moment the panel came off. It's visible in the upper right: The panel on the ground: Notice the missing panel on the right wing, above the outer flap: This was before the panel came off. Looks like it's working its way loose here: Closer view of the damage

Yep, looks like the user "Delta4904" has posted a couple pictures showing the panel that fell off, as well as a glimpse at the damaged wing. http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index.php/topic,21413.15.html Judging by the lack of replies, I'm guessing no one else from these forums was there yesterday, and that there's not much interest in the incident? --NoJoe [EDIT] fixed link

Anybody else see the A-10C demo at the Olympic Air Show in Olympia, WA this weekend? I just got back from the Sunday show, where we had a little extra treat... During a (moderately) high-G pull-out the A-10 lost a couple panels right over the runway! It gained altitude and loitered a couple miles to the east while their ground guys went out and retrieved the panels from the grass. I assume the pilot was assessing the damage for a minute or two, then came back and landed. It was a surprising and short end to the demo (which was awesome, up until then). I'm a bum and didn't get any pictures, but I wanted to send up a note here in case anyone else was there. I'll try and post some links to pictures in the next couple days as they come up. I'm SURE someone got pics or video of the incident. We couldn't get very close to the plane after it landed, but it looked to me like the panels that fell came from on top of the right wing, just forward of the outboard flaps (but inboard of the ailerons). Hard to tell from the distance. Hopefully pictures will surface soon. I sure hope the pilot didn't over-G the beast. Yikes! Glad nobody was hurt, and not too much metal was bent. --NoJoe [EDIT] I really should have named this something like "Pieces come off A-10C during demo in Olympia, WA" or something more exciting like that. I found a small conversation about it on another forum, too! Sounds like some of them got photos and a video, but nobody has uploaded them anywhere yet. Here's the post: http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index.php/topic,21413.15.html

Seconded, I do the same. Was going to suggest it, but Uri_ba got here first. ;) --NoJoe

Aww, I was waiting for it, but nobody said it. So I'll bite: "Never tell me the odds!" :D --NoJoe
