I stand corrected! This would agree with kablamoman who told me to stay primarily on the right rudder and the kitchen science below. So, if the gyro is yawing to the left, and the wind is coming from the left which should cause a weathervane yaw to the left, what is causing the plane to go right and nosedive into a propstrike?

I appreciate the detailed and thoughtful reply. Will make sure I'm straight and stable before lifting the tail but Isn't lifting the tail going to require left rudder? Do you think the tail should be lifted at a slow speed or a fast speed? I do understand the gyro and why the prop pulls right but what I find unrealistic is the nosedive prop strike. Any explanation for that?

We are doing the Challenge Campaign Mission 3 which comes with the P-51D. The wind is 10 meters per second or 20 knots perpendicular to the runway.

Simulation mode Auto rudder = 0 Takeoff assistance = 0 The point is that I have been unable to lift the tail without the prop pulling right and into the ground making a 2 wheel takeoff impossible. Takeoff assist and auto rudder makes takeoffs easier. If yours is on, you are cheating.

https://youtu.be/5nU7kgEXOMk Gentlemen start your engines and try this in DCS. A 2 wheel takeoff from the end of the runway in a crosswind. Drive all the way down the runway on 2 wheels before liftoff. I did this one for demonstration in X-Plane 11 with a Skunkcrafts P51 for comparison. I can't do this in DCS which is why I started this thread. Good Luck Gentlemen!

Not what I had in mind Grafspee! lol! So how do you watch these? My guess is that they need to be copied to the Tracks folder in DCS. I tried to upload the same files to Youtube like AJaromir but Youtube rejected them, probably because it doesn't know what a TRK file is.

I will get a track posted as soon as I figure out how to do it. Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay. At this point, after watching AJaromir's video, I think the problems begin when I lift the tail. I was trying to do a wheel takeoff rather than a 3 point takeoff. I will get you a track soon. Thx. Since you are the resident expert, would you please try some 2 wheel takeoffs rather than 3 point in the same crosswind scenario? Looking forward to your input. Thx

Don't know how to post my tracks. Sorry I'm thoroughly disgusted at this point. As I said in my opening post, I have no problem in X-Plane. I have also flown normal 45 degree crosswinds in DCS. Here, in what is supposed to be a training scenario, the tail swings into the wind and the prop goes to the right and into the ground without me touching the stick. I understand about Gyroscopic Precession but this is crap. The aerilons should be banked to the left in this scenario and there should be right rudder to keep the nose straight, just like landing in the same scenario. Left rudder when the tail comes up to compensate for the Gyro. So what's the trick to keep the prop from going into the ground?

Nice job grafspee! So you think the flight model is realistic particularly when things don't go well? During my attempts, the tail would swing INTO the wind and the nose would drop for a prop strike.

Hello all and thanks for the replies. Please go to the Callenge Campaign Mission 3 and demonstrate the technique for a crosswind takeoff. I think u will all get a better understanding of the flight model issues. I set up the same crosswind with the P-51 in X-Plane and had no issues.

My experience is with the P-51D but probably applies to all the tailwheels. I would like to see DCS improve the flight model particularly for when the plane is on the runway both taking off and landing. The plane does wild yaws that are very unrealistic. I understand about torque and ground loops and such but planes don't travel down the runway sideways in real life. The amount that the plane can yaw before it stalls or has a wing strike needs to be more limited.

Please add a page to DCS or the ability for the mod builders to add it to the plane mods. X-Plane and P3D both have preflight weight and balance info and an important part of real world training even without heavy bomb payloads. Is this info hidden somewhere not so obvious?
-
I was just looking for the same info. I see you got no response so I think it's safe to say there isn't any such preflight info in DCS.

I have now discovered that as I go through the missions in the P-51 Challenge Campaign, more missions become visible. The mission in the Youtube video above that was called the Concrete Jungle is actually named Skyscraper.
-
Thanks Fagulha! Will check it out. I found another called Maneuvering. It's Mission 6 in the P-51D Challenge Campaign.
-
Really??? Nobody knows where this campaign and / or mission is?
-
Nope. That was part of the solution in my post but that prevented using other programs until Alt-Tab. I think most users just click to another open program rather than Alt-Tab wherein lies the Window Out Of Focus issue.
-
Point noted Flappie but that's not the way I normally change applications. I will start using it now to switch out of DCS to use another program. Any thoughts on the other issues like launching Microsoft Edge when raising the P-51D flaps?
-
I have also been struggling with this problem and I think I have found the problem! Yahoo! DCS loses focus when we click outside the game. We don't realize this when we have a VR headset on. I found that when I would click on the flap control in the P-51D which is very low, I would be starting other programs on my Windows task bar. My mouse viewed through my headset in VR was on the flap control but my mouse outside VR on my screen was on Microsoft Edge or P3D on the Windows Task Bar! The solution is to make sure you are running DCS with a full screen with the mouse cursor confined to the game. The mouse cannot be allowed to click outside the game to work other programs or the problems start. DCS should address this problem because being confined to DCS without access to other programs and windows is a burden. DCS needs to be closed to access other programs in this mode. I hope this helps everyone. Please test and post your experiences here. Thanks.

As a new user, the first thing I need to learn before weapons and going into battle, is how to fly the plane. Has anyone created gated courses to fly and offered them here on the forum. I saw one on Matt Wagners Youtube channel that he said was included in DCS but I can't find it.

Thanks again Art-J! I don't have the Spitfire yet but would like to get it at some point but have all I can handle now with the P-51D and the A-10C.
-
Thanks Art-J! Your expertise shows. Hard to belive you're not a programmer. New P-51D-30-NA in the works. Thanks for the tip. Saves me from more frustration. I have seen Kneeboardbuilder as well as Openkneeboard but that's a converation for another post. Thanks again!
-
Thx again SilverDevil. I puchased and installed the P-51D recently and I have a P-51D folder in Saved Games. How long ago did you install yours? Maybe Art-J can shed more light on the issue.
