And anyways, the Su-34 and J-8PP don't neatly fit in any niche in DCS (J-8PP especially).

I believe you are correct, I think Nightstorm should make it such that both AIM-9(M or X)s extend out of the weapons bay when trying to get a lock, as that is how it is in real life as far as I know.
