  1. Yes Jonay, that's why I doubt the KA-50 is certified for aerobatic maneuvers and therefore non-aerobatic. ;) Don't be a smart-ass though. You knew we were talking about aerobatics, didn't you? ;) Thanks for the clarification Ethereal, much appreciated! What's the max maneuvering speeds with full control deflection do you know that?
  2. I doubt it will be a key around the Pause key. There are no flight control keys in the area of that key. Rudder is tied to Z and X by default. I am inclined to think it's either a USB quirck or maybe a dirty/faulty sensor in your rudder slider on the stick. Unplugging the stick will likely reset the input to neutral.
  3. How would left be more safe than right? The rotors rotate to counter eachother so it shouldn't really matter, should it? Is the KA-50 licensed for acrobatic maneuvers? Could you name some?
  4. Yeah I remember my Creative Labs SB AWE 64 Gold being rather expensive. Went all the way to a different town to be able to get it. I still remember opening the box and the smell. Nostalgia...
  5. And the financially risky part is the winner here, I think. In combination with the higher cost of production and development in relation to Russia we have a circle again. In the 80's games were fun, but hardly a big cash cow. This has changed dramatically (or perhaps evolved is a better word) over the course of time and now the game industry rivals the movie industry! The emphasis on spending money to make more money is much more pronounced now as it was in the days of pac-man. People might still create games because they love to, but they want (expect) to be paid for it as well. Just look at the decline of quality, not only in games itself, but also in the packaging we brought up earlier. Gone are the days of nicely printed manuals included with every game, gone are the days of installing and playing without first having to download several hundred megabytes of patches before it even works remotely as intended. All traces of getting to the cash as quickly as possible with the lowest cost for the producers, resulting is bigger profits. Make no mistake. It all revolves around money. How many (smaller) game companies are shutdown at the moment. Loads. Due to the big one's being too much of a competition, but also because certain projects are not financially viable anymore. A game takes several years to create and if the shit hits the fan in between you have a few years of work lost and no market to sell it at. Risky indeed. Now with the statement EvilBivol made I think a point has been made; the combined factors in Russia are ideal still for creating a full detail flightsim, while it remains financially viable to do so. Hopefully for a long time, but wealth and economies have undulating paterns. Who knows! ;)
  6. A good barrel roll remains at or extremely close to 1g for the whole procedure. I don't know if you have sufficient control range to perform a barrel roll in the Shark, (after all it's not a fighter, nor an acrobat ) but if you do then a well executed maneuver wouldn't damage your rotors.
  7. Well in your defense; I never was able to put Anisotropic Filtering to 16x in any game with 6800 card or better without suffering serious performance drops. ;) I am curious where that statement comes from. AF 8x though should be no problem and a nice tradeoff between quality and speed.
  8. Good! Do you happen to know wether the trains will continue their journey as well instead of stopping dead when you make contact? If they would continue you could really practise your flying skills!
  9. zika look at the Shoot! website. I think there's something written about it using framework 1.1 and Vista not supporting that (at least not without a tweak). Don't shoot (pun intended) if I am talking BS, because I am telling you from the top of my head. I remember something going on with Vista and Shoot. ;)
  10. Just do the affinity tweak and lower the AA setting before you start searching for other reasons. I bet your performance will be more than acceptable when you've done this above anything else.
  11. Dusty, right you are. I meant no harm either, but the comments are just too funny. :) It could be something you would see in a Monty Python sketch.
  12. Me hungry --> need food Me want fly heli's no KA-50 --> need tools Me want tools --> need Eagle Dynamics ;) *This was found scribbled on the wall in a cave somewhere. It's believed to be originating from the Jura era*
  13. On a 19" monitor there's no need to go as high as 16xQ AA at all on a 1280x1080 resolution apart from it being too demanding on the card, like Zorg pointed out. If you need AA try your luck with 2x or 4x first to see wether that gives you the smooth enough edges you want. But beware that AA is often a FPS killer. Also, like Zorg said, find a tool to set the affinity to both cores of your processor as the game doesn't do that automatically at the moment. DCSMAX is an option for this. You can find it here in the General Discussion section of the forum.
  14. Right you are. That's because all those sims are built as procedure trainers more than anything. My company wouldn't give a rats ass wether I would enjoy looking at trees swaying in the wind, couples making out in city parks, dogs pissing against bushes (well I could go on, couldn't I? ;) ) and what not. They need a platform to train crews in things they need to be proficient in from a jobs perspective. A consumer product, though, which will be used for entertainment purposes is different and that's why we all keep shouting that we want it all! Great terrain, many details, realistic avionics, you name it. In a way we seem to expect much more from the devs for our home products than companies expect from professional products! Enventhough the stakes are ten times higher. That's a bit unfair towards our devs, isn't it? ;) It's a massive undertaking to create a simulator as detailed as BS is right now and I am more than happy with it! Some people (not pointing a finger to anyone here, just in general) don't seem to realise this and seem to think that adding stuff is just a matter of adding a few lines of code to a program. It doesn't work that way, at least not like that. Instead of a 'OK, now we have this in place, now we want that!' attitude, I just enjoy what we have now and wait patiently what the hardware of the future and the coding the future will bring to us simmers! :)
  15. Magnificent job, Shrubbo! :-) Enjoyed your vid very much. Very (origininal and...) cool to include the 'training' in the credits. ;)
  16. Hi there gents, I was fooling around a bit in DCS while designing and testing my X-52 profile. The two screenshots included in this thread are an example of two rather funny things I discovered while playing around. One shows my attempt to land on the flat-bed carriage of the train while it was moving along its track. While I came very close to actually land I discovered that the train will stop moving once you touch one of the rolling stock or the locomotive. This certainly killed my goal of landing on a moving train, but I wanted to see if it was possible anyway, but unfortunately you will drop through the flat-bed carriage onto the track when you try to land on it. Funny nonetheless! The other picture shows me (the pilot) taking a walk around the shunting area of a nearby train depot to take a look at the armored vehicles on top of the train. You can see the KA-50 parked on top of the building. Quite funny as I didn't know it was possible to walk around! So I thought I'd share my few moments of joy and awe with you all! ;) Happy flying! P.S. The images got a bit jerky around the edges due to compression, sorry about that, but you'll get the idea.
  17. That's why I burned them on a DVD. :) But installation goes much quicker from the harddisk; e.g. my comment about deleting them afterwards. ;) Just to point out that the files are not used by DCS BS when its installed.
  18. Thanks for the explanation, but it hardly has anything to do with the topic. People buying the retail box is not related to people buying the manual whatsoever, you even say it (look above). If they want to buy the retail box, fine, it's their choice. I can understand why you think it would be silly, though, if you already have the game, but we're talking about an inquiry about how much you would spend on a color manual. A friendly bit of advice though; you might fare a bit better if you would loose the attitude there, pal. In this whole thread you've been ignored by everyone but me. The only way to deliver a point of view to others is to make them listen and think. Your rather aggressive method does not seem to work well. You could've posted "$0" just as well and be done with it.
  19. Even GTA IV's world is still clearly a computer generated playground and gives the player not the 'feeling of actually being there in a photorealistic liberty city'. At least it doesn't do that for me. No game does, maybe in 25 years when we have holographic games! ;) Anyway, my point is that if someone asks wether you see a fully realized 3D world with citizens walking about and what not you really have your expectations up too high. The current hardware is monstrous in terms of capability, but I don't think its up to that task yet combined with all the number crunching it has to do already with the flight model, weapon systems, etc. Its a Utopian thought that might very well be the simmer's wet dream. :) Besides to really make you 'feel' you're there in a chopper you would have to make yourself a nice moving platform at home which simulates the movement of the helicopter. I doubt your roof will be up to the task to carry all that weight in your computer room. :D To be fair about the 'feel': I have to fly in a Level-D approved Boeing 737 full flight simulator twice a year and even those simulators are still that; simulators. While the 'feeling' is quite good, it's still far from perfect. (Don't start about the lacking visuals, please, because the professional sims are mainly procedure trainers so visuals are low on the priority list and that's not the issue here in my point anyway). DCS is one of the best flight sim products in terms of realism of avionics and aircraft systems out there. On top of that the visuals are very good. There's a LOT of detail on the outside on the aircraft, tanks, trucks, etc in the program and the terrain does a good job of making you feel like you're flying over realistic terrain. Lighting is very realistic, especially on objects, so IMHO there's a lot of eye candy for people who have the required hardware and value eye candy as well as detail in avionics. I would definately say; buy DCS and support the developers as we have a gem here!
  20. This might be unneccessary, but; setup.exe and data1.cab are in fact the two files that need to be together in the same folder. these two files are the install package of DCS and can both be deleted after install. Just to be sure. ;)
  21. Or you could start you own server, advertise it here and hope people flock to your server. I know I would like to have a sim buddy. Drop me a note with availability and we might be able to meet online to have some fun!
  22. Too bad the shipping costs might make the deal too expensive, but some online webshops have a fixed price world-wide shipping fee. It might be worth searching a bit on the net. I just can't believe there's a seller somewhere out there who couldn't make you a fair deal.
  23. I think I've lost you here. People bought the sim for 50 bucks. The new manual will be offered for 30 bucks and you don't have to buy the retail version to get the printed one it's offered seperately. I don't even know wether there will be a retail box with the printed manual included. So howcome you get to 120 buck on top of the spent 50 on the sim? Mind you, this is not meant to be a personal offensive, I am just curious about your point of view. Of course the whole manual in color will significantly add to the price, but then I still do not understand the comment about the extra retail copy of the game? Enlighten me, please, sir. ;)
  24. Gentlemen, no need to go into a 'no mine is definately better' arguement which neither of you are going to win. It will boil down to getting 'your right' with a possibility of things getting nasty. Just accept that there are people who prefer one over the other. It's just as we do with girls, really. ;) And be glad of it, otherwise we all would be drooling over the same girl!
  25. Great news it worked out in the end for you, gunslinger! ;) Free Track might be a hassle to get up to working, though. I've used it for some time with IL-2, but it was rather jerky. It all depends on the refreshrate of your webcam. Track IR has a very high refreshrate and will give smoother and more direct performance, but admittedly that comes with a price. I never regretted getting one for myself, though. It's truely plug and play I haven't had to tweak a single setting with any game yet. Raikov eventhough its not required to play DCS maybe you can find an online shop who whill ship to your country, or maybe NaturalPoint itself. If you're willing to shell out the cash I would seriously consider doing some research to see wether you can get your hands on a TIR. It causes you to have a much better Situational Awareness in game and besides its just plain cool! :) Beware though, if you're more of the casual gamer/simmer type it might be too expensive regarding cost vs using it. Of course all that only stands if you can get your hands on it... Good luck!
