Indeed a great lineup. How many FPS do you get with this? I think many people's PC's will fry running this setup. :joystick:
-
Nice vid! :) But we can go lower than that, can't we? ;)
-
While most of your points here are hitting the mark, I am surprised you were surprised to find it this way. This thread and the other Xplane thread already mentioned all your gripes / findings several times. It could've saved you some money. ;)

Don't forget that JRollon has provides several of the stock aircraft for XP10. He is a renowned aircraft producer for X-plane with some high quality offerings. His Space Shuttle and 747-200, for example are very nice. And are miles ahead of any stock aircraft FS has ever brought to the table. Most, if not all (havent checked yet) stock aircraft now have 3D cockpits out of the box. Still no FMC's and no decent SID and STARs in X-plane yet, but stock FS does not come with any of this either.
-
This I don't agree on at all. ;) This I do agree on. ;)

I agree, make no mistake. But the same motto goes for MSFS, doesn't it? Or would you say those stock aircraft are decent? :joystick: So given the fact that we've now established both titles are, in fact, a flight environment more than a sim out of the box. Sobek's statement holds true no less. It depends on the addon aircraft. I would even argue to say that the flight environment X-plane delivers is superior to FS's modelling. So why aren't third party devs jumping on X-plane? Probably because X-plane still has the reputation of being the not-to-be-taken-serious little brother of MSFS and resides in beta status forever (which is partly true). The user group of MSFS is far larger than that of X-plane, so that's where the money can be made. Perhaps X-plane should be relaunched under a different title to re-introduce itself to the simming community, now that there is definately no replacement for FS on the horizon with Flight! turning out to be a game rather than a sim.

Ohh now that improves the look of a big city. Great mod. The night lighting in unprecendented! ;)
-
Well a small dedicated group is all you need, right? If we can get 4 or 5 people together we can have a real blast with it. There's three already; you, Haggart and me, so that would make for some fun missions already if you ask me.
-
I would seriously suggest trying XP10s demo indeed before you buy. It's a rather expensive package (but comes on 8DVDs with high res terrain).
-
Heh I hear you. About Austin's enthousiastic speeches, that is. I understand your views about quality, but I am just a man of proportion I guess. For the small team they have, I personally think they have done a magnificent job. That's all.

While I generally agree that X-plane is not as good as it could be, you do understand that X-plane is being developed by a far smaller group than FS was? For the resources they have available I think X-plane is a remarkable project and gets very near to replacing FSX with the new v10 iteration, at least for me. If (and this is a big IF) third party developers are aware of the potential of X-plane and its future incarnations and they decide to jump in making addons we could be looking at a magnificent civil flightsim. Terrain and weather is miles ahead of FSX. Scenery on the other hand is lacking severely. The stock aircraft are as crappy in their flight modelling as FSX's, but FSX has the advantage of having some high quality third party aircraft. On this point X-plane is behind, but is gaining momentum nonetheless. It'll be interesting to see where X-plane goes. But I do not think it is fair to dismiss X-plane as an ongoing beta product. Only because the product is highly evolving does not make it a beta. It functions very well out of the box.

Can't do saturday evening, unfortunately. What about monday eve?

To bump this again; I would be REALLY interested in having another go at DW with a dedicated group of people.
-
Thanks, I see that is the case for quite some time already. http://x-plane.hu/x-economy/ It lists as Xplane 8 and 9 compatible, but I will try it today and see if it works in XP10 as well. Should be fun.

Out of the box I'd say the new X-plane 10 ATC engine is more realistic than FSX's out of the box. But there are no addons yet for X-plane, while FSX does have some to increase realism (RadarContact for example). But out of the box I like X-plane's more.
-
That's every area, except Seattle, regarding out-of-the-box X-plane unfortunately. It will get a bit better with the main airports over time with patches, Austin and his crew promised, but other than that we will need to rely on modders or third party devs.
-
I wouldn't agree with IFR - FSX. The framerate and instrument updates of Xplane are much better and therefore make for a better IFR experience. The problem, however, is probably the choice of aircraft.
-
The new X-plane 10 has a very realistic weather engine, at least graphics wise. The actual modelling of the atmosphere is still off, but so is the case with MSFS. Terrain wise I think that of Xplane looks much better out of the box, BUT the new iteration uses a new autogen system which has its quircks like powerlines crossing runways, fictional small airports being generated and cities having odd housing and no flats or skyscrapers. Also landmarks are currently missing, but we are promised this will come. So, while the terrain itself looks much better in X-plane, I think you have a more familiar terrain packed into MSFS. Airports (see X-plane thread) come devoid of any buildings and objects out of the box in X-plane, whereas in MSFS at least some rudimentary objects are placed. In X-plane you only have the ramps, taxiways and runways unless you add custom scenery or place objects yourself. Lighting, however, is VERY realistic in X-plane if you have a good computer! Flight model depends on what you fly. The flightmodel of PMDGs 737 for MSFS is very good, but also X-planes flight model is decent, although (just like MSFS) the stock aircraft are rubbish in that regard. Problem is that there aren't too many great X-plane addon aircraft yet. Especially not the bigger airliners. MSFS has a much broader offering there. Avionics ties in with the above point. X-Plane has support for all kinds of intricate avionics, but its up to the third party developers and modders to use it. Because of the earlier mentioned lack of many decent addons I find the avionics part in X-plane underused and in its current form therefore lacking. BUT (again) the analog instruments are of higher quality than MSFS's even in stock aircraft and the framerate or update rate is much much higher than MSFS's. This makes flying hands on a far better experience than anything I have ever experienced in MSFS. Regarding avionics MSFS has the same problem out of the box, but again, the offering of third party addons is much larger and make for some high quality avionics (PMDG again). As you can see, there is no package which has it all. X-plane supposedly has the better fight modelling, but we (modders) need to start doing stuff with that. Nonetheless X-plane does offer a lot for civil aviation enthousiasts. And you can actually fire weapons off aircraft that have em too... out of the box! ;) Mid-air refueling, entry from orbit in a space shuttle, carrier takeoff and landings... al there out of the box in Xplane.

Yes, JRollon really makes some sweet stuff for X-Plane. I hope many others will find the inspiration and go the same route.
-
Indeed it does. X-Plane v8 still had the 'cartoony' graphics with solid textured windows on airplanes and such, but 10 looks realistic. Especially the scenery and weather looks ultra realistic when looked at from up above. Job very well done. Now if there will be some serious addon developers making high quality stuff for X-plane just like they did for MSFS we could have a real winner. So far, MS Flight looks like it will be a very low-entry level game rather than a sim to appeal to a mass market.

Thanks! I absolutely love the terrain and weather in xplane so far. Cannot say much about the flight modelling yet. Also the lighting and the way sunsets and sunrises are done is mindblowing. As well as the roads and their night lighting. Truely realistic when viewed from the virtual sky. I understand the roads are read from the open street maps database. So in theory you could navigate from a to b by road in xplane. Very cool. The one thing I do feel cheated by, though, is the way they decided to populate the cities with buildings and, more importantly, the airports. It turns out we've only seen Seattle in all videos. There they made a custom tailored airport with buildings and doodads, but thats the only one in stock xplane! Everywhere else only the ramps and taxiways and runways are present (cool feature: you can enable the runways to slope with the terrain instead of being straight and level). They claim this was unintended but neccessary for release and main airports will receive builings over time. We'll see.

My X-Plane 10 arrived today! I got charged an extra 20 euros for additional tax and clearance cost... not sure if that's ok or not? Anyway, I am currently in the process of installing the sim. I was looking to see wether there was a way to spice up doing stuff in the sim as I am already sitting in the cockpit most days of the year for real and I came across a plugin called XAdventures. The maker(s) claim that this features an adventure creation and playing suite for XPlane, just like the Adventures in FS were. Does anyone of you have any experience with it? Is it easy to use? Are there (better) alternatives for getting more interactive tasks in Xplane? I ask, because while I think its very nice to just fool around in the 'flying sandbox' I feel like I will quickly come to ignore the sim if I can't entertain myself with purposeful flying (missions and the like), because I am doing line flying all the time already in real life and I really do not want to take my work that far and bring it home. Besides a sim can't beat the real deal anyway! (God, I wish I had a Hog):P

Yes as long as you pay for the shipping. :P
-
X-Plane is very much a sandbox of flying fun, just like MSFS out of the box. You and alter, add and remove all you like and the user generated content is where the product can really shine. Still waiting for my copy to arrive. ;)

Thanks for the video tutorial link! It has been a long time since I played any 'X game' and these will certainly help once I want to dive back in!
