Umm... Shouldn't you want to wait until you have a little more Reputation Influence before saying that? To the whole world? Just thinking... you know... where will be the first place people will look? -SK

New Flaming Cliffs CD-ROM Copy Protection
SwingKid replied to SwingKid's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Maybe my timing was off. For the benefit of Portugal, Spain and all the other countries for whom copy protection is a very serious matter, I changed it so now the picture is at the top. Get it? bastão! What a cool word... :) SW? ... ... ..."Star Wars"? -SK -

Disabled images on a forum without signatures? But... some pictures are worth a thousand words! This is what happens when I'm stuck late at the office. -SK -
Some users have recently expressed interest in formal, official announcements from ED, of decisions regarding the Lock On v1.1 “Flaming Cliffs” add-on distribution and copy protection, and in particular, whether the CD-ROM version of the upgrade will use a different copy protection from that of the downloadable version. Although ED has not yet prepared or translated a formal announcement, and mere beta testers like myself cannot officially represent ED, interested readers may rest assured that ED has examined all possible options, and is excited to employ innovative new solutions under their all-new business model and distribution system. Every sold copy of the CD-ROM version of the Lock On v1.1 “Flaming Cliffs” add-on will be delivered with its own, unique copy protection. Some of the promised new features and advantages of the scheme include: - 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week immediate response to individual user feedback - consumes no disk space! Protection installed only once for all ED products - privacy! No need for an internet connection, spyware or registration - allows unlimited new hardware, - unlimited uninstalls and re-installs on a single PC, and - unlimited backups of the original CD for personal archival Users are advised and warned, however, that the new copy protection WILL require an additional item of hardware to be added to the user's set-up. ;) -SK

And THAT's the brilliance of it. See? If you're already fighting each other over Rep points, you're too busy to yell at ED over Flaming Cliffs... -SK

Yeah, "distinguished road" is not enough distinguished for Stormin, we need something more special for him. How about: http://www.waves.utoronto.ca/~pavacic/lomac/photos/disting.jpg ? -SK

I agree that something seems odd about this incredible cooling laser. So, I can use the laser for a maximum of one minute, and then it automatically switches off to prevent overheating, right? But if I decide to "save energy" by turning it off after, say, thirty seconds, when I think I don't need it anymore, then immediately turn it on again for another thirty seconds - then it doesn't automatically switch off anymore, but rather self-destructs itself? Maybe I don't understand... why does it need to cool all the way down to "zero" before it can be normally used again? Can't we just cool it down "part way"? And who invented "Shift-O-O-O..." six times? Which super-realistic switch in the cockpit is THAT supposed to represent? :) -SK

Regarding radar SAMs at the front Several items of concern - - can a radar SAM fire on the move? I thought they need to survey the local ground clutter and settle in before they can start to track air targets (hence the oft-read parameter regarding "time to become operational"). If true, this would not really be compatible with an advancing front line. - helicopter rotors can create false targets on radar, making radar SAMs less suitable for defense against these than infrared - agree that the SA-15 is attached to a division, but I thought this actually meant they would be somewhat behind the front, guarding the HQ, supply trucks and artillery, with the regiment-level air defense being deployed at the front - the SA-15 was especially designed to defend against cruise missiles, which are not usually fired at front line tanks - by the time the missile arrives, they've moved. Unsure, -SK P.S. I think SA-19 Tunguska radar may be an exception by using a higher frequency radar like the ZSU-23-4 for shorter range and possibly low PRF operation, I think this is why they can fire on the move without a set-up time

Shared Custom Mission\Campaign Formats
SwingKid replied to arraamis's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I wouldn't mind letting users make their own payloads and waypoints, I just don't want them to play with the AI. Once a mission designer has the AI behaving correctly, he doesn't want anybody to breathe on it. Ironically I think this is one of those few things that Flanker 2.0 actually did better than Lock On. There were three levels of classification - the player could change payloads and waypoints for all friendly flights, or only the own flight, or nothing at all, depending on how the mission designer created the mission. In Lock On, there seems to be no "mission planner" function for the player at all. Just a "mission editor", including control over the enemy units. BTW, you do realize that if you really want to declassify the mission, there are some very easy ways to do it, without needing any help from the mission designer? The password provides almost no real protection at all - just press Ctrl-Shift-C and you can change any password yourself, to whatever you want. Say it with me: The password should actually protect the mission!! :) -SK -

Why do you think? I classify my missions in order to inspire complaints like this. It should be possible to change our own payload and waypoints, even if the mission is classified!!! If nobody complains about it, how will it ever be fixed? It should not be necessary for me to see everything the enemy is doing, just for the ability to change my own waypoint. Say it with me: We should be able to change our own payload and waypoints in classified missions!! -SK -
Out of curiosity, do these words actually mean anything? What's the difference between "synergistic tracking" and just, "tracking"? And how does a passive sensor "penetrate" anything? Shouldn't it just be "filtering"? Some of these descriptions of the CCD seeker sound suspiciously like marketing hype. -SK

That's such a good point, I increased your rep. -SK
