Explosive tape o_O I'd always wondered what that white stuff was on the canopy, I figured it was like, a weak point or something so if the canopy doesn't blow off, it'll break apart there when the seat goes through it. No, nothing like that. AFAIK the only American aircraft that uses something like that on the canopy is the Harrier, and that's British so there you go.

So um, bump? Just saw a MiG-29 fly directly at a Patriot battery and shake off two missiles (they detonated probably ten feet behind the MiG, it left with a minor fuel leak in the left wing). I later lost an engine and my entire right wing from an Igla...

I would probably buy it but I wouldn't be happy about it. You already said it - LOMAC, FC, and FC2, and then DCS? I'm already bored of it *yawn*. Too much of a good thing and all that.

I'd really like to see the Black Sea get finished first :P All that terrain to the west, not a single airfield or village!

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
Frostiken replied to diecastbg's topic in DCS Core Wish List
For what it's worth, that's fairly plausible - RWR systems have to be incredibly sensitive to very minute signals, so damaged coaxial wiring could cause enough attenuation of a signal for it to be mistaken as something else. Or some boob loaded the wrong OFP into the pod XD -

Didn't a Patriot radar get demolished that way? -
I can only imagine what the crew chief said when he saw what you did to the canopy actuator.

"Target is, single infantry. Use GBU-10s."

Ammo already cooks off, and looks pretty good. Me, I just want the game world to look more like ArmA 2 with smooth rolling hills and cities that are more than a satellite picture of a town with some buildings plopped on it. Not likely, but it'd be nice if the game world looked that convincing.

Well... sort of. I mean fundamentally the AGM-88 is 'Oh look, a radar spike' *pickle, turn away*. It's even easier than a Maverick. -
We have emergency T.O.s for F-15s that involve wearing a harness in case, you guessed it, both engines are running and you need to access the canopy. Yeah, like, **** you, you can wear the god damn harness, I'm staying back here.

I was wondering about the reality of the in-flight refueling. I have no idea how it functions, but to me it would make sense if the refueling boom kept a certain amount of tension on the aircraft, in order to dampen oscillations and smooth out speed variances. I can't imagine real life pilots have to wiggle the throttle a fraction of a hair forward and back to stay in position...

Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals
Frostiken replied to delta9856's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I would recommend the CH ProPedals, simply because CH has a reputation of being completely indestructible, and pedals, well, they get a lot of wear and tear :D -
Untrue. First, 'HOTAS' is an acronym, not the name of the product. Any stick / throttle combo is a HOTAS. Secondly, in order to play the game you would need any HOTAS with several buttons and/or programming software. The only thing really unique that the Thrustmaster Warthog provides is a split throttle and a dual stage trigger, the former of which is really not necessary at all, the latter of which can be worked around if needed and exists in other setups as well. However, the Thrustmaster Warthog is a luxury and is, in absolutely no uncertain terms, not necessary. A CH Products Fighterstick/ProThrottle/ProPedals can be had for less than half the cost of the TM Warthog and is more than adequate for the game - the advanced scripting software unique to CH is a major boon and generally will be more useful in other games than you would probably find the Warthog, as you can do some really cool things with it. If you're on even more of a budget, the X52 can be made 'good enough' and costs half again what a CH setup costs. Note that the TM Warthog has no rudder functionality at all, and the X52 uses a twist - you'll probably have to buy pedals on top of the TM Warthog if you go that route. This is true. For the budget-minded, Freetrack works as well but only with the 32-bit version of DCS: A-10. Better advice I think would be to learn a 'lesson', then play with it, and integrate your previous lessons into it. If you're learning the CDU, don't just learn the CDU - do a ramp startup, takeoff, use the CDU, and then navigate home and land. Note that this isn't perfect - it appears that you freeze in mid-air but that's it - everything around it works as normal - weapons will still impact their targets, wingmen will buzz around you... Additionally, do not use the laser early, generally only 8 seconds of lasing is required. If you fire the laser the entire time the bomb is in flight, instead of ballistically reaching the target, it will try to fly straight to it, and run out of energy and fall short. A good tip for new guys, and not why you think - Hollywood and Afghanistan have lent this romantic notion to the A-10 that it's only useful when flying so low to the ground you can use rocks as AAA - the 'Hog can reach 20k feet easily, and that is necessary to avoid anti-aircraft fire and SAMs. Don't be scared of altitude, the only reason you should be dropping low is for gun runs, rockets, CCIP employment, or airborne threat evasion.

The first time I ramp started the KA-50 it took me two hours (refused to read the manual) and then flipped over and blew up :/

I'm scared of multiplayer :(

Er uhm... They always have... there's no visual effect yet but the higher you set 'birds' the higher chance of a bird strike (random engine failure) what at low altitude. I have mine set to 250, which is rare enough that I can do several missions without problems, but it pops up now and then.
-
I actually fueled myself up with an additional 8k pounds of gas today! Only 32 disconnects! I think the boom operator got sick of me because after a while I'd connect and he'd just say 'disconnect' and refuse to give me gas... I was all: http://www.deviantart.com/download/62745348/Heavy_Weapons_Guy__Bullet_by_rrc589.jpg

I don't 'repeat to perfection' but the point of the sim is to play it. If all you want to do is explode Russians, you can go play HAWX. Even if I'm just doing some little training mission I'll land just for the practice. A mate gave me a gun training mission, and the first time I tried it I sucked a bird down the #2 on takeoff. He said to turn birds off and restart, I said no, and proceeded to land :P Perfect? No, I'm too much a spaz to do perfect... but at least get the spirit of it :D

Well.... actually... :D PS: Steve, I missed your post, I'll respond!

Didn't take long for someone to blow that out of proportion and totally misinterpret it... but really, just step back and read the posts, people act as if this means that they're squashing bugs that the patch will introduce, or they pulled it to pack it full of free cake or something. It got pulled because the installer itself didn't work, plain and simple. I personally really don't care if it's delayed or not (argh, shadows!) - I can be patient, because software gets delayed all the time, both professional and amateur. It happens and nobody should harbor any ill will towards ED for holding off a week to make the patch actually able to, you know, run. But jeez people, the patch didn't work. It's not like they had a lot of choice in the matter and I'm sure they wanted it released as much as we did. But heaping praise and acting like the patch is going to be any different next week just sounds a bit... daft. In the end, the installer will function as it was intended, and the patch as it is today (sans installer) will be released next week. Not a big deal. <Negative karma avalanche>

My TrackIR is irritating and pedantic :/
Frostiken replied to Frostiken's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I just cut two slots in a hat and stuck the stupid thing in it :D Keep in mind it's only for the left side. Badcrazy happens when you put it on the right... though maybe you could electrically invert your TIR camera in the options to make it work on the right...
