These are good points. However the more I use VR the more I seem to like it. I had good improvements in smoothness by using motion reprojection. As shown here. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=228378 That's pretty much a 100% win with little to no real tradeoffs. I still want to call Samsung and ask about edge clarity Im on the fence about if what im seeing is in spec. I

Samsung Odyssey + need a bit of help getting beat up by some issues
Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Virtual Reality
Nodak I figured it wasnt too spot on I try to set it so if feels natural... I seem to be getting more blur on the left side Can you comment on how menus look as far as edge clarity? -
I have never seen this where is that option hidden?
-
is there a trick you guys are using to help look directly back? swivel chairs to get a few extra degrees?
-
I find that I have to really twist around to look back more so than real life due to a narrower field of view. Is there any way we can add a motion tracking curve similar to something like track ir but just much less. For example right now its 1:1 if I turn a 120 deg I get 120deg. It would be awesome if I could say between 0 and 120 deg add 30 deg so by the time I twist 120 deg im looking back 150 deg. we could even add an expo curve so it ramps in a bit faster after 90 deg or make it linear. Im guessing there are no options for this yet as it would have to be built into DCS or be specific to dcs so it wouldn't effect other VR apps.

Samsung Odyssey + need a bit of help getting beat up by some issues
Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Virtual Reality
I see it occur about equal in all situations that have suitable complexity (words) This includes super position VR (a benchmark software that is quite amazing to play with in vr free download to test system but 20 bucks if you want to mess with it in vr pretty much worth it) Also the IPD display does not display correct values when adjusting IPD. Both lenses move but its suspect that the IPD distance windows just displays random values that vaguely seem to reflect the wheel position. Do yours work proper? Thanks for the help -
I had a friend over today to try it out I was able to watch the FPS counter on the monitor screens and it actually does hit 90fps more often than I expected. Getting an average is tough still I need to turn that setting on and see what avg is over a known location. I tried to enable to the MS counter thats show MS per frame it works but it was causing the mouse to not work??? Ill have to try again so I can see in real time as I fly what FPS im getting.. Ill try to get more accurate results and post them here

Samsung Odyssey + need a bit of help getting beat up by some issues
Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Virtual Reality
lol no worries starting with basics... yes I removed them before putting on the headset the first time. no matter how I position the headset I can only make it worse. I have good eyesight with no contacts or glasses. My friend has far crappier eyesight and uses glasses. He seemed to experience the exact same thing to about the same extent. He has many hrs behind the PS4 Vr and his initial reaction was wow this is way better but what the hell is wrong with the edge of the screen. my initial intro to VR was with his system and after flying a bit I used menu similar to this to check sweet spot size and I could only detect some slight blurriness way way down at the edge of the image like the last 10% of the image had slight blur that you had to look for to see. Im starting to think this is a hardware issue on the headset side warped lenses or something. I have changed these settings so far steamVr Version 1.2.10 "application resolution" to 208% DCS Pixel Density to 1.0 No AA my nvida settings are default I havent even found "VR" settings in there yet what settings are you using and did you change anything in nvidia control panel? Could there be a setting im overlooking? If you were to look at the training screen that I put in the screen shot head on and then look to the left edge at the aircraft icons still clear? If you were to fly the mustang when a mission loads it has that picture of the p51 sucking the gear up. If you look at the air intake just below the spinner can you read the disclaimer at the bottom " Weapon systems and aircraft associated with them are not endorsed by anyone bla bla bla" Thanks for helping me compare this! -

Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Virtual Reality
yes care must be taken to get the fit just right. This is a screen shot that I edited to simulate as close as possible what I see in terms of how the blur looks including the way it blurs and the severity. This was done by taking a screen shot of my training window after setting vr view center and looking right at the middle of the screen when you look off center towards an edge without moving your head this is what I see (screen shot below) is that about what you see? Sweet spot is about the size of the center box surrounding the "name" and "map" columns -
Samsung Odyssey + need a bit of help getting beat up by some issues
Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Virtual Reality
I had a friend come over and try DCS he has the PS4 VR system that I originally tried. Ive been making adjustments and Ive pretty well sorted out my issues to the point where its enjoyable to fly in vr and he thought it looked really good. and playing off his experience with the psvr the issue here is the small sweet spot. This is the issues that seems worse than it should. The sweet spot seems quite narrow and is much narrower than the psvr system I would say after 1/3 away from center the image degrades very quickly. I try to come up with a way to perhaps compare this any initial thoughts on this? I was told the SO+ has the largest sweet spot between the vive and rift Thanks again! -
I just got the SO+ and things are getting better than they were 24 hrs ago. My main issue is I dont have a base line of what is to be expected and its tough to see because you cant simply just take a screen shot and there are people who say "ive been using VR for Year+ and would never use something that would make me less competitive in DCS ill never use 2d again" So I am trying to sort out: what is expected and totally normal What is an issue cause by a setting that can be adjusted or Work in progress What could be an unexpected hardware issue (exchange for a new set and try again?) I have been trying several settings and I found that "the most noticeable and clear result was steam SS:208% /dcs PD 1.0/ dcs msaa off" as described in clear vision tweak. Im fairly sure that this worked better for me than SS to 100 and PD to 1.4 no MSAA. Now with these settings im getting a pretty solid 45FPS over downtown Dubai with settings close to what was recommended by jabbers in his VR video. I am running an i7 at 5ghz with a strix 2080ti and 32gb of 3200 ram. Does this example sound like 45fps is what would be expected? I hear people talk about when it gets close to 90fps things get clearer how the hell is anyone getting 90fps is it just in very rare instances? like 10% of the time? with the above info here are some things are causing me real issues 1) in a dogfight p51 vs fw190 in a head on pass I see a ghost image of the plane maybe 10ft separated from the original. Also when flying past a parachute is this expected and normal? FPS related? A solution? 2) using the Steamvr and DCS settings as described I can almost see how someone could tolerate it and it is usable I can read the temp gauge and read the numbers for the speed but the usable area "sweet spot" seems quite limited it seems like a box shape and is about maybe 1/3 the screen on the splash screen when the mustang loads is has a disclaimer about weapons systems and whatevs when looking slightly down from center this can be recognized as English text but not read I have a feeling that I am losing a lot of clarity because of either the double vision issue with the O+ or because of a hardware issue (the lenses) I dont have a solid understanding of how this works but the Frenzel lens seems like a super cheap option for magnification and as a result we have a TON of fisheye effect near the edge, we have spherical and chromatic aberration causing color separation (blurriness and probably the "god ray" issues that is very obvious near the last 1/3 of the image. Is that normal sounding? Does anyone know if the frenzel lens is used to save cost or is required by design? If a 1,500 dollar set of apochromatic glass lenses were used would it solve all these issues? Ive got a pretty strong feeling that its creating a pretty good image but something is totally stomping it. I set IPD based on a somewhat accurate measurement but the image is getting trashed by a lens issue or a software issue creating double vision or slight misalignment I tried the .lua settings from the post "DCS and Odyssey+ cross-eyed!!" but that didnt seem to make much improvement over the DCS implemented software. I feel like its close but not quite right and im not sure how much this would mess things up visual wise. any input would be good. Its a bunch better now thanks to help from this form but I would have a hard time believing anyone that said this makes them better at DCS so I suspect there's still an issue here that is causing me some problems and I can get some improvement still. Thanks

i7 8080k at 5ghz strix 2080ti and 32gb of 3200 ram. I dont know what the heck that is? I have the display on the Vr headset that matches the foreground display in the screen shot in terms of FPS and then a mirrored display behind that which appears to run at a speed equal to what DCS would normally run on my 2k screen. So technically im seeing the same image 3 times one in the headset and 2 on the screen. Not sure if thats normal or what maybe not clear but the screen shot is my desktop
-
I set my settings up very similar to what jabbers had shown in his VR Setup and the best I got was 44FPS When I look at my monitor I see two instances of the game running one at about 44fps and one over 100fps...is that normal?
-
Okay so I got the SO+ Attempted to do some setup but there wasn't much available in the walk though Started DCS and tried to do some stuff and its pretty terrible. So now is where I get to figure out how to set up VR so I get the most out of it. With the play station 4 system you set IPD and go and it was fine but this is a far more complex system here so im not surprised that it sucked right off the bat. Here are the issues and hopefully you guys can point me in a direction to solve them. I have pretty dang good eyesight and dont use glasses or contact. 1) I sometimes get double vision on things up close when looking at far away objects like canopy rails on the p51 or the no handhold dillio on the k14 gun sight. 2) the center FOV for like 40 deg is the only real usable part it gets pretty blurry towards the edges or even past 40 deg. I didnt notice this much at all on the PS4 system yes a bit but it was like the last 10 deg. and most of the image was quite consistent in quality. 3) im not sure on the proper startup of dcs I just click the shortcut and it launches DCS in VR I guess though steam VR but I'm only getting 20FPS so im not sure if its running the game twice or if something is way off settings wise. That same mission I usually get 100 to 150fps Lets start with that... Thanks Gun

Thanks Bun I got StreamVr and Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR which appears to allow steamvr stuff to run on WMR but im assuming it also runs native WMR stuff as well. It looks like it installed okay but I cant launch it because it detects no head set Rossterman the O+ has the highest res screens of the 3 common systems and its a year newer so mechanically it should be better if it was implemented properly that was my initially draw to the O+ in the first place. Thanks for the help guys
-
Okay thats quite helpful. The systems that use external cameras for position tracking use steamvr and systems that use internal cameras use WMR. with the exception of rift which has its own software. So now I see steamVr in the steam software and it looks like an easy download click and done but If Im going to use O+ then I need WMR software and when looking for that I ended up at the dreaded MS store. Its free but it cant install it because it says my copy of windows needs to be updated to be at least Windows 10 version 17688.0 or higher but clicking the update link redirects to a dead page. I like win10 a lot in fact I like most version of windows even including vista (once updated) but the very odd thing is MS software seems to be on average the least compatible with windows thats something ive noticed before and its almost funny. At the download link for this WRM software eveyone is pissed and no one had any luck. Im guessing I ended up at an outdated source can someone point me to a version of this software that I should be downloading. Did anyone have to update to a more recent version of windows? Is that not done automatically by windows updater???

Thanks for your input guys! That was my initial reaction too... That the immersion more than makes up for the loss of graphics BUTTT that was with ace combat where you dont need nothing there's no real gauges or anything other than a fake cockpit and a big arrow that say go that way and huge flashing box around the target. Its a total 180 from DCS where all that stuff does matter so it still needs to provide a decent image and from what I can tell it does...it should be better but it appears to tick the box for "still usable" and "not just eye candy" Im pretty sure I want to go with the Samsung O+ because I like the idea of the cam looking out and not needing extra stuff to screw to my wall. FragBum I built this PC with the intention of not closing doors on VR which im glad I did at this point. Its an I7 8086K at 5.1ghz with 32gb of G Skill Trident Z at 3200. Has ROG Strix 2080ti. Hawkeye I did read that thanks. Does the Samsung O+ come with software used to set up IPD and make config changes? I find plenty of reviews about how it compares to other systems and how VR in general is real immersive but Im getting beat up trying to find how VR implements with a game. So do I need steam VR and WMR to get the O+ to work with DCS? There's a 9 page thread with these getting tossed around to make config changes that impact DCS but I dont know why that isnt done using the software that might come with the unit and if they are actually required....still not sure what WMR and SteamVR do outside of that small VR testing enviroment Thanks again -Gun

I have heard a lot about VR but couldn't make up my mind my main concern is that its too new of a technology still...but then a friend got a play station head set and ace combat 7 (running on PS4) and pretty much insisted that I stop by and check it out. I figured it would be like full range of motion track IR and some slight improvements in depth of field. Not sure if anyone here has played acecombat 7 I haven't. Its an arcade game and doesn't pretend to not be. In this case it starts out in a hangar with like an f-18 and some people walking around. I started on the tv and it looked like anything else no big deal whatever.... but when switching to the VR HMD there was a pretty significant wow moment. I had no idea that it would produce such impressive scale and depth. One thing that I noticed immediately was the creation of true depth and not just a simulation. A menu screen was floating in front near the observer the jet was much further away and the hangar wall was much further than the jet. To clearly see each object you had to focus on that object just like in real life...actual depth. That was quite surprising. The image was okay it was not fantastic but neither was the image on the TV. In both cases reading the text on the gauges was tough but it was a bit better than I had expected considering the VR Headset and the PS4 combined cost less than half of what my video card alone cost which is also nearly as large as the entire PS4. So now I want to give it a shot...people seem to really like it and with an extra 2,500 dollars of hardware over the PS4 (not counting the head set) I would expect the image to be significantly better to the point where one can read gauges, huds and text. to start I have questions about windows mixed reality and steamvr Im not really sure what they do other than provide a VR enviroment like a little game to test equipment with. But they seem required to play DSC in VR. Is that true and if so what do they do??? I figured this would just take software like track IR does that would have options to setup VR and then simply start DCS and its good to go....It seems like its more complicated than this. It looks like the Samsung Odyssey + the HTC Vive and the Rift are the most popular. The Odyssey is suppose to be the best image can anyone confirm or deny that? Does the Odyssey need cameras like the Vive...I dont see them in pictures and cant find any reference to them...how does it track head movement? Thanks for your help

Getting beat up by trims (backwards and inadaquate)
Gun Jam replied to Gun Jam's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
yep that did the trick thanks! -
I have the MS Force feedback 2 and apparently DCS has had issues with the FF2 since before DCS world. I know it was all backwards with A10C. Well now im trying to trim out the A10c in DCS world and not only is it still totally mixed up. (nose up trim is left wing down trim...ect) but now I cant get enough nose down trim to fly level. Its bad enough that empty at 300kts I cant engage autopilot. Any solutions to this? Thanks

I'm having a tough time with instrument reflections and sometimes sun glare off the canopy when trying to follow targets. Since everything is at the same distance there really isn't a way to focus past these obstructions. In my car I dont notice bug splatters, scratches, or reflection from the dash at all until I focus on them and they become very noticeable then I look at my object that might be 20 feet or 20 miles away and all those issues with the windshied are instantly filtered out by a focus change and the declutter programing built into most human brains that accompany a a focus change. This doesn't work in DCS because the target 1 mile away and the gun site reflection off the canopy are actually at the same distance (about 2.4 ft) and Im having issues dealing with this. Is there a mod to tone down the reflection in all aircraft to more accurately simulate a focus change..or just remove reflections? Thanks -Gun

While DCS might not be the MOST demanding game it does require a modern system.... I am not opposed to this. I just got DCS world when I saw the f-14 was being released. I played DCS A10c stand alone and that ran okay on my PC. DCS World 2.5...not so much but it does look much better. I had been debating building a new system to replace my current 7 year old PC. Now I have a good excuse. Ill probably spend 3,000 bucks and not touch it again for 7 years. I typically try to build with about 5 to 6 years in mind. Ill be throwing the new RTX card in this system with a 5Ghz i7 8086k. This is the rules of the game we play its been this way since D0om. Devs need to keep pushing hardware limits or we wouldn't have things like DCS / heat blur's f-14 or other very visually appealing titles. I welcome it but realize its also a bit of a love for abuse thing.

well if none of the planes appeal to you and you dont like one more than the rest then I think you should ask the following questions: Do I want to do CAS / ground attacks or air to air? (Ground targets dont move so much might be considered easier thats opinion) Do I like mechanical stuff before computers (get in and fly) Then wwII korea... Do I want to learn avionics? then everything else (this is the steep learning curve) the A-10 has very advanced weapon systems / nav systems / fire and flight controls..etc That can help narrow it down to a few planes...Then go to the forum for those planes and maybe ask some more specific questions perhaps about how much others enjoyed the training missions and offline campaigns (both are excellent in A-10c stock OEM) What after market missions are available... do any of those sound like you would be interested. That's probably the best you can do. in my opinion (talking bone stock here no mods which could solve some of these issues) The Su has a terrible set of training missions and no interactive cockpit so you are learning key combs and not visual locations of switches that you typically interact with. making it WAY harder to remember how to do something...this is a bummer. The rocket pods are pretty fricken cool though! The 2 barrel 30mm cannon is total crap and does not put rnds on target well (coming from the A-10 so im spoiled) the gun pods you would think would help they just take a bad situation and make it even worse...what a crap setup. The gun / rocket sight is often lost in the clutter of the hud which obscures my target. The worst issue I have is the lack of view from the cockpit this is a system that you need to see well out of to be proficient and its totally horrid. There's a big 25" CRT monitor blocking a nice chunk of ground on the low right, The hud has a big piece of that blue lumpy 3" thick shower glass to reflect off of and you cant see past it worth a damn in good lighting. in bad lighting its totally opaque. The canopy has large pillars all over which obscure view in many directions. The seat and fuse block view from the rear what you can see out of the back is often glare off the high radius sections of the canopy. I had 0 of these issues in the A-10 which was tough enough without those additional problems. So hopefully this helps you make a decision as you have to wade though others opinions to form your own the trick is to narrow the scope of what you want to do and find most appealing then see whats left to fill that nitch.

Thanks David for the link. This is excellent news any DM improvements will be greatly appreciated. I wish the article would have given more detail about the visual side of things. I get the feeling they are talking about visual damage to the craft its self and not about improving / adding large volume flames and smoke. Im glad work is being done in this dept so thats good news.
