ED SIMS SCREENSHOT AND VIDEO THREAD!!!! (NO USER MODS OR COMMENT)
mmaruda replied to rekoal's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Sorry, but this just screams "THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN"! :megalol: -
I'm far from feeling angry about this whole thing. However, it really does not seem fair on ED's part. Had they actually mentioned this is due some technical problems, it would have understandable. Though I can't see what problem there could possibly be. Right now it seem to me as if they are trying to get some people to buy BS2 again.

Be sure to set energy management to "maximum performance" in Nvidia drivers, also check Windows power plan (there is something in advanced setting about PCI-E which should be off. I have a GTX 680, i5 2500K@4,4 and 8 gigs of ram and only SATA drives and I run this sim maxed out and never fall below 30FPS with @45 in cockpit most of the time and above 60 outside. So you hardware is definitely not the issue.

Help with overclocking...
mmaruda replied to blackbelter's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
RAM should be set to what the producer recommends. For Ivy/Sandy Intels, you should not exceed a voltage of 1.5. 1.65 is max (not really safe) and anything above might fry you memory controller. As for the CPU itself, BSOD means too low voltage usually. The auto OC is not good, since it either giver too much voltage or not enough. I run my 2500K @4,4 with a 1,3 voltage. The ASUS auto mode goes to 1.4V at 4,6Gh and it's stable in Prime and IntelBurn, but not in games. OC is a tricky process, there are lots of ready to use recipes, but the sad truth is that each CPU is different, so the only way to do this right is the hard way - set the speed to what you want, set expected voltage, stress test with various tools and normal use. I you get a BSOD - increase the voltage by little and start testing again, remember to monitor temps. This is a long, boring and irritating process which might take days before you get what you need, but eventually it's worth it. -
Check power saving settings. Beacuse FC2 does not use much of the gfx card resources it might be that you card is running in 2d mode.

Diablo III has even less skills than Diablo II. If it's just the amount of skills and spells that you like, you might be disappointed. However, the gameplay is really awesome. It looks very good and is very polished. I have read somewhere that there is or will be demo/starter edition, so you might just want to check it and see for yourself. Also, Diablo was never an RPG, it's a hack and slash game. Comes down to killing hundreds of monsters, getting better items and leveling up.

I played the demo when it was available. It's an arcade game, but quite fun and better than HAWX (at least you don't get those tunnels and icon all over the screen). The RTS elements must be a new thing - cool. I hope the devs finish it.

Well, Take On is not a study sim, but I hear the FM is good. Cold start doesn't really define a simulation. Anyway, I don't have Take On, just saying, if anyone wants to fly the Hind, it's an option.

One must understand how IL-2 works. This is not a "how it feels" game. More of a "numbers say this" game. The original IL-2 (first release not FB) was quite well made, everything seemed to work according to what you might have expected and a 190 would pretty much always own those damned Lavochkins. Stuff got messed up with Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters (the latter one being not actually Oleg's projects, but Luthier's - the guy responsible for CloD). Now the main problem is, that the initial game took only some basic numbers (weight, wingspan, engine power, etc) and calculated the FM somehow - I'm not really sure about how it was, just repeating what some people refered to as common knowledge. After jets and more complicated planes got in the game, each FM was specific for the aircraft. Initially some planes would defy the laws of physics (190, full rudder, yanking stick back did not result in a flip). Anyway, most of the stuff got fixed by now, but people are still complaining. I think it's the game engine's limitations that come into play (drag is a bit of an abstract concept in IL-2, prop pitch also is not exactly what it is, only the recent patch did proper stuff to overheating). I could go on and on, played this for years, mostly offline, but I am more or less familiar with the FM battles on forums. I think with such an amount of planes and people ranting, it's now impossible to make the FMs how they should be. Last changes to the 190 made it a no drag plane and it turns out, the drag for the FWs is mostly from the prop. The Corsair also got slowed down to match what the charts said and all was fine till people discover it was too slow to take off at times. Anyway, there is a ton of stuff that can be said, but the reason Oleg did not listen is probably because many people contacted him saying they are pilots and this and that is wrong and it wasn't possible to make everyone happy. Now Team Daidalos do the patches and it's a great job they are doing (like the AI, finally!), they seem to listen, though I wouldn't expect IL-2 will ever feel a bit like the real thing. One thing has to be said - it was the first WWII sim, that actually showed how hard and complicated flying the planes of that time was, not to mention fighting. Suddenly, it wasn't about making Ace, it was about getting back home in one piece. The game is old and dated now, but still fun to play and easy to get into (the easiest, "serious" sim I'd say). It's simply one of the best sims ever made and will always be. Just one more thing on the FMs, the whole wrong feel, wrong performance thing in game is very subjective as well as it is subjective in real life. You'll find a dozen WWII survivors who will say that P-40, P-51, P-whatever was the best plane because they found it a good machine to fly by their subjective standards. But it also may be so, that 100 guys laying dead in the dirt would curse the plane because it got them killed. Same goes for every other side of the conflict, Russians praise their Lavochkins (somehow the did not mind 20 levers to operate the engine and a +50C temp in the cockpit) and as I'm Polish, I should feel obligated to say: take a hike, the best planes of WWII were the P11c and the Los bomber. :) Once you look past your expectations on a given plane, and start to play the game and try to fly well with what you have, it's tons of fun. Cheers all!

You can make fun all you want, but let's honest. IL-2 cannot be compared to DCS - it's a whole new era. One must acknowledge though, that Oleg's work was a milestone in sim gaming - the amount of planes, realistic engine management, ballistics... that was something back in the day. As far as flight models go, I still think IL-2 is pretty descent. Bearing in mind how much work went into it over the years to make every whining fanboy happy with his favourite 109 or Spit and the forum battles over which FM is "porked", I think the devs made a pretty solid job. ED is in a very comfortable position with DCS. With the modern planes, fans probably would find it hard to prove something is wrong due to problems with obtaining proper documentation. And as for the Mustang, ED can always say: "Unless you happen to own a P-51 and fly it, shut up!" :D

There is already a Hind addon to Take On Helicoters and with the editor and availability of mods, you can go combat flying just like that.
-
Actually, the rants from US players about the Mustang/Corsair/Hellcat/Wildcat made them change the FM so many times, that there is hardly anything of Oleg's work in it. But at least they did revise it several times and posted some historical data that they used. Too bad same cannot be said about the La-5 and La-7 which act like made by the finest engineers in top quality control factories with the use of alien technology.
-
It's a well known issue, has to do with power saving, not PSU or drivers. Check if there is an option in the drivers to always run the card on maximum performance. Also go to control panel, power options, enter you power plan settings, then advanced and look for an option like PCI Express and make sure it's turned off. That should resolve the issue. Worked for me at least.

I'd say go for an i5 2500K first and good cooler for OC.
-
Flanker! One of the best sims ever made. And many people to this day claim that the flight model was much better than anything IL-2 was able to present. Any chance we can get more... "Flanker spirit" in FC3? I'd like to see the cobra back. :)

Good future friends and adversaries for the Mustang?
mmaruda replied to mjmorrow's topic in DCS Wishlist
It's more about the way the pilot uses the planes advantages. A 109 G2 could put up a fair fight against the Mustang, same goes for G6. As for the K version, these were really not good in terms of production quality as they were developed in haste, in a shed or something, mostly to shoot down bombers. Germans really had to make do at the end of the war. Anyway, I played some IL-2 over the years, and there were quite a few god players easily owning the P-51 in 109 E4 variant. Balance is not really important in sims. Anyway, if anyone is interested in FMs, how one plane would compare to another and all, you should go to some IL-2 forums. People there are always arguing about this, they will throw performance charts and historical data, pilot accounts, all of it at you. Basically, stuff people know from popular documentary series doesn't even scratch the surface. -
Well the 680 goes through DCS like a warm knife through butter. Looking how the performance is close on both, it seem like a good purchase if you want above 40 frame rates maxed out.
-
Latest video: It's surely arcade, but looks quite authentic, the developers had to take inspiration from FC\DCS. The HUD/Shkval etc look more sim than arcade, even the Vikhr goes in spirals. Good attention to details. And it has tanks!
-
I just got the 680 on monday, now it's clear overpaid. Curse you Nvidia! :/

What do you think about P-51D and Flying Legends?
mmaruda replied to csper's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I'll agree with the above. Seeing how polished the Mustang seems to be and how people enjoy it, I'm ok with it. Obviously, noone is forced to buy it. However, the WWII setting is a great opportunity and it would simply be foolish to waste it and leave untouched. Here's an argument for you: DCS goes core engine, all modules online compatible etc, the whole Battle Sim thing, or whatever it's called, it seems like ED is aiming for some major online battle scenarios with various aircraft and combined arms. Cool. Now in that environment the Mustang is out of place. Sure you can say it's still fun to dogfight P-51 vs P-51, but one of the coolest things about IL-2 1946 are Virtual Fronts where players recreate historical missions with dozens of squadrons doing their respective jobs (bomber cover, strategic bombing, interception) all on one server. In such an environment the Legends Planes would really shine. I do understand that ED now has 3-4 projects going on (Mustang final, Nevada, Battle Sim thing, fastmover) and surely they have their hands full and a tight budget, but with those third party addons there is room to do something in this direction and judging by the people's reactions and opinions, as well as a WWII sim hungry market (IL-2 is a mess with modpack vs. modpack vs. official, CloD is DOA and Wing of Victory has no online) it's bound to be profitable. All I'm hoping is that ED at least considers this. It's win-win situation: fans get what they've been waiting for so long and with DCS or even FC quality many people would switch to DCS and ED would grab a serious amount of cash. Anyway, if costs are the issue... Kickstarter maybe? -
Isn't this realistic? A bunch of guys hiding in the forest will be able to see a helo flying over it without being spotted themselves. The only problem I see is lasing and killing targets in the forest, since as you said weapons and beams go through them.
-
A-10 and BS2 require a beast PC to run at a descent framerate. You can check Windows and Nvidia setting for any power-saving stuff, turning everything to max performance might help a bit.

What do you think about P-51D and Flying Legends?
mmaruda replied to csper's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
The Mustang alone sure looks great, but out of context it's just a plane. Now the screens above... If ED makes this happen, then I'm all -
Meh, I can live without colidable trees. I'm a child of the '90s. We did not have cool graphics or realism back then, so we just had to use our imagination. I still do when playing DCS. It's simple guys, just fly as if the trees were colidable. With the A-10 you don't really fly that low, and Black Shark is quite hard to handle with the trimmer and all, so you want to avoid any crazy flying below 50 meters. Solid trees is just something you can live without, except maybe when ED decides to make a tank sim. I'm more curious about how EDGE will affect overall performance. Will it be an optimized or more high-end version of the engine. Optimization is always welcome in my book, but I don't think we actually need better graphics - DCS is about technological warfare not sightseeing. You spend more time looking at you instruments and TGP than other stuff.

I wouldn't agree, its quite playable without mods as well since all they add is better terrain and more planes. As far as I know, SF2 doesn't have any mods that make it more realistic. The problem is that it lack mod packs, you need to download each file separately and make your own.
