My first semi-successful AAR. Do you guys have wake turbulence on?
Poopskadoop replied to S. Low's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I just recently started getting it right myself. I think the two biggest tips that helped me that I've seen repeated are to use the refueling pod as your center line reference, never the basket, and to be constantly adjusting the throttle. I make very small, quick adjustments back and forth on the throttle, which helps maintain my speed by averaging out any errors in my speed. Otherwise, it might seem like you've got the right speed for a second, but the more time passes between adjustments, the further back or forward you will fly. I don't use auto thrust control or any autopilot settings. Using those two tricks, I went from flailing around like an idiot to getting it on my first try. Oh, also, I never dare look down at the fuel quantity. -
I dunno, I still feel the Su-27 and MiG-29 radar systems are more intuitive than the F-15 or F-18, which I have recently put many hours into. First time I looked at the F-18 radar screen, I was like "wtf is this jumbled mess?" I understand it now, but I still have a preference for the Soviet fighters. I don't know what you mean by predicted target distance. You simply change the scale of your detection zone, just like on the F-18, from 20 to 40 to 80 or whatever it is. Elevation is controlled by notching up + or - 1000 meters, but this isn't usually necessary unless the target is way, way above or below you. Then you have the option to slew the radar left or right to find targets off your heading. I suppose the F-18 does this automatically. Still, I've always loved the HUD radar scope. Modernized flanker when, ED? I want my multiple target engagement with TWS and R-77s! I wonder if they retained the HUD scope on newer flankers.

Yes, I've fooled around with it quite a bit over the years, but these days I'm just too lazy. :P Side note: Are the paid campaigns worthwhile?
-
Thank you all for your input. I'm glad to see ED plans to work on a dynamic campaign. It will make DCS not only the best simulator but the best aerial combat game, provided the system works well. I will also check out DCE.

I see, so these aren't the same missions in the "user files" section of the site? If so, I'll dig through there. Thanks.

So, I've been playing DCS for quite a long time (ever since it was called Lock-on). My most recent purchases were the F-18 and MiG-15. The planes are great, wonderful; I couldn't ask for better. However, there is one problem I have with DCS. There's not really a lot to do... The MiG-15, for example, came with no campaign and only a couple of missions. The F-18 came with nothing, though I understand it is still under development. So this begs the question: what is there to do? side note: I'm not interested in multiplayer quite yet. I'm a bit too lazy to create my own fully fleshed out missions and campaigns, so I thought maybe others have amassed a large library of great missions for a variety of aircraft. However, looking through the user files section of missions, I am left a bit wanting. Half of them are in other languages, some are just updates to existing missions, others are just training missions. So my question is this: is there some resource for DCS missions that I have somehow missed? Certainly there must be some "classics" that are generally regarded as great missions by the community, no? Specifically, I am interested in missions for the Su-27, MiG-15, MiG-21, and I suppose the F-18 (though I'm still learning it). And what I wouldn't give for a dynamic campaign system like the kind for Il-2 (and the great dynamic campaign mods it has)... Also, I know there are campaigns for sale, but I'm not really in the mood to spend more money after having just bought the F-18. Are any of these campaigns worth the price?

F-18 with winglets, or photoshop?
Poopskadoop replied to Force_Feedback's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yeah, clearly part of the paint scheme. Otherwise, those would have to be the strangest looking winglets I've ever seen, perfectly triangular, pointy, and much too large to seem practical. I like the delta wing illusion. -
Last stack of CDs I bought had some sort of plastic thing. I'll have to hunt around for a stack that has a rubber one. Thanks.

Friday 27th April 2007: Red Bear Rising (Movie)
Poopskadoop replied to Andrew_McP's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Very, very, very nice. Question: How did you get your vikhrs to hit when firing from such a close range? Mine always have too much spin. -
Aye, having a bit of trouble picturing how it's all fastened, but I'm definitely interested. I know Pilotasso uses a sort of rubber disk (right?), but I couldn't ever dig up something like that around the house, so rubber bands would be a great alternative.

Su-27 making God !!!
Poopskadoop replied to Cdr. Instigator's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I'd say a clean mil, but that guy seems well off enough to run his own workshop and fund this project, so I doubt that he would sell it for anything. I mean... unless it was like $1 billion. -
Poll: Which AI-aircraft is most hard to kill ?
Poopskadoop replied to golfsierra2's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
The only thing that irritates me about the Mirage is that missile it carries (I forget the name). Sometimes I forget that it has a two-part boost stage, the latter portion of which engages when the missile approaches you. It completely throws off my timing. -
I understand the sound barrier literally imposes a physical constraint on the aircraft? It's interesting that breaking through it with AB and then powering down to full mil allows one to maintain a speed > M1. We don't seem to have this ability in lock on. Or is it only a handful of aircraft that can do that?

Poopskadoop replied to golfsierra2's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I've made that mistake once. I was flying my Su and was basically just screwing around. I wanted to take out its engines one by one. I overlooked one minor detail; and over the course of a few seconds, I was plummeting towards the Earth in a fireball. -

Poopskadoop replied to golfsierra2's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
F-16, for some reason. I can't explain it, but no other aircraft gives me as much trouble even in BVR. Maybe that's simply because it's my most common enemy. I usually fly against NATO aircraft. When flying against Russian ACs, the MiG-29 seems to be the most difficult to down. Again, I'm not sure why. -
Su-27 making God !!!
Poopskadoop replied to Cdr. Instigator's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Want an Su-27 but don't want to join the Russian airforce? Make one yourself. ;) Such dedication... -
Well, it's not quite that bad, I imagine. Still, it would make sense to channel a larger amount of funds into research and development instead of putting into service fighters that would not stand a chance against a stealthy adversary. It would be interesting to see how stealth aircraft will engage each other. This could be the return of the dogfight.
-
S-37 is a technology demonstrator. It wouldn't be advantageous for the Russian AF to put into production an aircraft without stealth capabilities resembling the F-22 or at least the F-35. EDIT: Oh, Su-37... Well, same story, quite frankly.

Aye, maybe it's this raging headache. But I, for one, prefer the green guy. :D

I haven't noticed anything wrong with your posts, aeroscout. You always carry a friendly attitude and do genuinely try to help. You should probably just ignore any PMs you're getting about the issue.

It's a pet peeve of mine, I suppose. I have no issues with the icon itself, but I can't stand it when I see it used at the end of a smart-ass comment. It seems somewhat obnoxious to me. Read this: "Nope, you're wrong. :)" and tell me the smiley doesn't add a little bit of a pompous air to it. Again, it may be a purely subjective response on my part.

Passenger jets all have very similar designs. Do you think everyone is just copying each other? Or perhaps a certain design function will tend to look a certain way. In this case, even if the basic airframe is similar, that doesn't reduce the workload of the engineers by much. I'm sure Russia doesn't have access to any documents regarding the construction of the F-22, so every component must be designed independently. By the way, I just love the little tendency I've been seeing of people slapping on ":)"s at the end of smart-ass statements, like a little drop of venom. Sorry, it's just a trend I've noticed here in particular.

Best Fighter Jet in the world?
Poopskadoop replied to VVanks's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
MiG-23. Because it has a secret switch that converts the radar into a multi-functional tracking device that can detect any airborne target regardless of its rcs with the maximum range being limited only by the horizon. No one really understands how the system works, but there is probably some plasma involved. -
I understand that they didn't paint the P-42 to reduce weight and drag in every way they can, but a flanker without a paint job looks miserable. Well, at least that third image in the link on the previous page does.

Want to add the R-77 to the Sukhois
Poopskadoop replied to BrzI's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
And, of course, MKIs and the new Venezuelan Sukhois. EDIT: Oh whoops, "27s." Sorry.
