It's still a prototype and has some stuff to finish yet. You can't compare it to either Rift or Vive because it's not a 110 fov and most importantly, it's not for sale. Pimax still has yet to achieve true 200 fov and the CES complaints are apparently due to pushing the v5 fov out of whack. They also have yet to achieve 90Hz and now are looking at April before they will know if they have beat that one. I wouldn't think it will see retail until late in the year. Their hand contollers and base stations won't be done till April at least.

The ED Team has been pretty quiet. Are any of you going to be at CES?

The Tested review was prototype 2 and did not have IPD adjustment. Vegas will be prototype 5. We have requested that various "testers" run tests with Proto5 before a 2nd shipping survey is sent out. Pimax has agreed that "testing is the final examination." As far as passing on this one, you have no choice. This isn't a retail product it's a Kickstarter. You can't buy one at this time. You may get a chance late this year thanks to those of us funding this development. As a Rift owner, I will not be unhappy if Oculus responds (don't see that happening this year). I hope they do because one thing is for sure -Pimax is not my last vr headset -just my next one.

I was glad to hear Pimax chose to demo DCS at CES. This should give up some great information we've been looking for on performance, although the meat and potatoes numbers will have to wait until the testers get their hands on it which hopefully will be soon after the show since it will be necessary information for many before filling out the new shipping survey.

Too be fair, if you thought you were going to get the sharpness of monitor quality then you didn't do enough research. Pilots here have been discussing targeting issues in VR for a year and a half. Identifying targets at a distance is an issue in current headset resolutions. Most turn on labels or just live with it for now. Like many, I ordered the Rift 2 years ago aware that it wasn't as clear as a monitor and we couldn't even turn up the pixel density (VR setting in game) at that time. Even so it was about the immersion and being willing to make trade-offs for that. Vast majority seem willing to live with it since they would rather be in the aircraft than flying a flat image in a room on a screen with less than 1 to 1 360 degree tracking. You can bet your booty that many of us Pimax 8K Kickstarters are first gen hmd owners looking for improvement in this very thing.

FlyInside supports Leap Motion in FSX. I read that it is pretty good for large buttons an toggles if they are far enough apart, but DCS birds have a serious amount of instruments that are so small and close together that it accuracy wouldn't make it practical. Oculus has been working on gloves for months. No doubt others, if not already, will be as well. It makes sense for VR and given how well Oculus developed Touch, I would think what ever comes out the door will nudge others to follow suit.

I bought the original Leap and the Rift mount quite a while back. It was interesting, but not very accurate. Sits on the shelf now collecting dust now. They apparently have a V2 in the works and Pimax 8 has a module attachment in development so maybe we will see more and better possibilities down the road. More adoption and development could make it a reasonable controller option if they can make it accurate enough. Time will tell.

I'll assume then that the answers to my questions are: -you meant PD -you don't have conclusive data because there is none Perhaps avoid absolutes like "everyone knows" when it comes to tech that almost everyone knows nothing about the actual performance yet. Even when we have tested the crap out of this next year, not everyone will know. You might consider offering up such statements as I'm guessing or IMO and offer supporting statements or links that lead you to believe the supposition.
-
I'm assuming you are speaking of Pixel Density (PD) and not Display Port (DP) here. Are you saying that running say a Rift or Vive at 1.5pd is more demanding than running the 8K at 1 pd? If so where would I find such conclusive data? If not then what are you saying? Given we have had no benchmarking of the Pimax 8, I would think what everyone knows for certain is this is gonna look sweet and not much else.

I think, most who ordered the Pimax are aware of the misleading label. It is right up there with CDROM, DVDRAM and the current use of the term Mixed Reality headset as far as accuracy goes. I would have preferred it if they had called it the Pimax 2x4, or the 4KDUO or just simply the Pimax 8 leaving the "k" out of it and letting the specs speak for themselves. Personally, this didn't put me off as I was aware of fast and loose nomenclature and the important part was clarity and fov. As far as the running it. It is a 1440p signal upscaled to 4k and displayed to one 4k panel then the other in alternating fashion. Not an 8k native signal, so the hardware needed to run it isn't as steep as one might think. How well it will run looks promising. Guess we will find out next year.

I've dropped anything that doesn't support VR.

We have been flying at home for decades. I doubt VR will impact the number of people who buy flightsims that much. People don't avoid sims because of the graphics medium. It will no doubt affect the number of flightsimmers who buy VR though, especially as it improves and gets better.

Amazon matching Oculus at $350 for Black Friday. Great deal

They're at CES in Jan. They have said they plan on showing Prototype 4 in mid December. If we see P5 at CES they just might start shipping in Jan. I can hope.

If you already filled out the survey you may have to contact them (which you can do through your Kickstarter pledge page. If you haven't done your survey you should be able to add 1 base station 75+$10shipping=$85 to the total "dollar amount of your pledge".-Then when you do the survey you add the base station as an item at that time. They confirm completion by email. The update now shows on your Kickstarter page under the new "Survey" tab. Pimax will update your order status right through until shipping on your personal Kickstarter page. As an example, I ordered the 8K and 1 base station. During the survey the advise that the can ship the HMD in Jan or with the base station which won't ship until April. I chose to receive the Pimax in Jan and the base station to follow later in April.

Throw a couple of transducers in your flight seat for that extra immersion. Cold starting that Mi8 in VR with a haptic seat is even more away blowing. Welcome inside pilot.

Your are not. I am in error. For some reason I thought Amsterdam had shown prototype 3. The information is on a build up and things are flowing so quickly it's hard to keep it all straight. My bad.
-
The best indication of current (prototype 3) performance is what Sebastion Ang says while trying PCars. It is far and away the most demanding title tried so far and we know it was running on some kind of 1080 laptop. There is another strap and foam faceplate. They list current modules here: https://www.roadtovr.com/pimax-ends-vr-headset-kickstarter-4-2m-truly-massive-job-ahead/
-
Nope. SweViver was in Amsterdam (prototype 3)
-
It may well have been a fair assessment of prototype 2. If he wasn't being fair (not my word) to anyone, it was himself for posting so little so late in relation to being a Youtube reviewer/tester of some popularity. I think it was more about getting some skin in the game as this heats up.
-
It's interesting he put up a demo with prototype 2 "after" prototype 3 has been in the demo circuit for awhile with proper wireless controllers being enjoyed by all. If you want people to consider you observations valid, you would think you would want to at least check current information. Unless it was to give the advice at the end of his video, ahead of the buying season, without coming off like the Grinch. There is a growing understanding that 110fov hmds have an expire date and it's looking to fall in 2018.
-
For sure. DCS will be an early test. It was my main influence in getting the Rift. I cannot wait to fly the Huey and Mi8 with this thing. I also can't wait to try Assetto Corsa, Elite dangerous and Alien Isolation.
-
I will not defend my purchase of the 8K last night beyond saying that I have a high tolerance for risk/reward. With the main reward for me getting my hands on one in Jan. I think they were truly caught off guard with the response and how fast the kickstarter moved. They pretty much sold out their inventory with 90 minutes left as I write this. Given where we stand in VR this season, Pimax will be either the tech everyone wants next year or out of business for disappointing their base, if this doesn't come off well. With all of the effort and running this thing around the trade shows on a laptop, I can't believe Pimax is in this for a tiny $4million of break even money at this point. If it's a disappointment, I still have the amazing Rift.

No napalm. There are certain medicinal plants that need saving. They help me GROK why "goes without saving" always seems to follow that which is said. I say this having found a better way to ignite some plants than napalm. Maybe all of that could have gone without saying-sorry. hehe

It would be nice if we had a video that showed that. So far I haven't seen anything with the actual "thru the lens" footage that would look any different on a Rift. NOT SAYIN that it won't. Just that the Pimax video through the lens does nothing to prove it's better. It only shows the game will run at some yet to be determined res and fps. Having run the video at 1080p on my 150" wall I will say that even though I can't read the gauges, at that size, I can see the SDE and artifacts that look like those ASW leaves in the Rift. Probably their BrainWarp version of ATW. How all that looks with the thing on is awaiting January/February. I look forward to actual feedback from the kickers who play DCS and the ED Team when they get theirs on their rigs. The Pimax videos really don't do anything for their marketing. In fact the lack of determining information makes many of us hold until more demonstrative information is at hand. I hope when this happens, it nails every claim about it. I really do.
