Ok, first things first, I didnt come here for an argument or confrontations. I have tanknet for that, and im perfectly happy with that, thank you so very much. Secondly, I did say I had been reading up (the Yefim Gordon book) on how the aircraft handled. And yes, much of it is about how they handled in Afghanistan, but its also pretty clearly they featured things like the pitch up, which was an occupational hazzard, and there are pilots on the internet you can search that say that its ruddy hard to turn. As far as turning, I can entirely believe its like any other helo at low speeds. But at high speeds, it now rolls like a fighter. Im certain I could do a barrel roll with it If I had the altitude. That is somewhat contrary to what you can read aobut it, not to mention video footage of it in Syria or Afghanistan, or any video footage of it flying in cold war exercises. And no, im not an Apache pilot, but ive seen plenty of footage of them at airshows to have a reasonable idea how they can handle. Its been a long standing believe Apache is rather more manoeuvrable than Hind. If this model is accurate, I have to ask why. There is a distinct change in how it handles over the past couple of patches. Im basically asking, how do we know that this is 'right', when clearly it was release with different handling? I dont believe this is a particularly unreasonable point to ask. If feels like a nearly different aircraft now. The irony is, they seemingly changed everything but the ocillation about 120km that makes it so hard to put the gunsight on target. Which considering the aircraft is reputedly more accurate at high speeds, again seems contary to written accounts. Look, Im not trying to kick dust in the air, or suggest im absolutely right. Im just concerned this now seems less like the Hind we have read about than it was at release. Thats all.

What do people think of the new update to the flight model? I really liked the OLD flight model, where it was actually fairly hard to turn. This seems borne out by video footage, and written accounts of the wings actually making it harder to turn at high speed. With this model, if anything it seems to handle much more like an Apache. I almost pulled off a barrel roll with it. Ive also not had that pitch up recently, the one that everyone complains about but also seems supported by some accounts in Afganistan. Any thoughts?

Russia Showcases "Checkmate", An F-35 Competitor?
stuart666 replied to SCHiZO's topic in Military and Aviation
Its talked of having a longer range than Eurofighter, which to me is complete insanity, considering how relatively small it is. It doesnt look much bigger than grippen. -
Ok, its up. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3317572/

East German and/or Reunified German version?
stuart666 replied to TheLongShanks's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
No problem, hope you like it. -
Thanks. Hopefully it will be up soon.

Found this scheme in a Yefim Gordon book. Historically it was a Mi24V, but I dont suppose anyone is going to seriously mind.

East German and/or Reunified German version?

Here you go. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mil-Mi-24-Attack-Helicopter-Worldwide/dp/0764358677/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=mil+24+hind&qid=1626530303&s=books&sr=1-10 It was a bit cheaper when I got it, if you are going to get it I would get it soon because it looks, rather like the Yefim Gordon book, the price is starting to shoot up. -
I think they only ever built about 24 VP's before ending Hind production, so its not like it was much more common than the KA50. I think the P was the right choice. But if they ever felt like doing an addon pack with a V or a D then Id be delighted with it.

Fantastic, Petsild and ams999 you absolutely nailed it. Thanks so much everybody. Ill try and get some of these uploaded in the next few days.

Well I figured it might be because I did them wrong originally. So I went and downloaded the texture map in the forum, exported it correctly and.... ended up with exactly the same problem. Ive used an identical technique and just made a hind skin, and absolutely no problems at all. I THINK its a description problem, but I look in the description of the skins that ship with the sim, and they look identical. So, has anyone got any ideas what might be causing it? These were working absolutely fine previous to 2.5. Ok, Ill give that a go and see if it works.

Thank you for that. Well I tried that, and its had exactly the same effect as before in modelviewer when I put in diffuse or whatever description in the relevant section. It looks like this. I understand whats causing the light green to do that, I can fix that by referencing the relevant textures. What I dont understand is why its doing the main textures like this. Ive imported into the game in exactly the same way Im doing with skins for the Mil24, but these dont work, and the ones for the Mil24 do.

Some years ago I created some skins for the Huey, and for whatever reason, I never released them. I decided to get into skinning again and decided to look at them and maybe up them, and found now when I import them into the game they have a wierd blockiness to them, like those Ukrainian digital camo. I also noticed look at textures on the user downloads section that at least one person claims to find some of the uploaded textures broken in the same way. I guess what im asking is, has anyone else noticed this with skins? I had thought it was my methodology of working, but I exported skins to the Mi24 with no problem. So is there something broken with the Huey since 2.7?

East German and/or Reunified German version?
stuart666 replied to TheLongShanks's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
There is a recent book on the Hind ive been reading that talks about the German political difficulty in assimilating a Helicopter witht he word 'attack' in its name. So for largely political reasons, the Unified German Goverment sold all the Hinds off. Ironically German troops when fighting in Afghanistan who were still waiting for the Eurocopter Tiger, had to received air support from Polish Hinds, many of which were ex DDR examples the Germans had sold onto them.... -
They create drag, weight, and I think have an effect on the power output of the engine. So in training, there is likely no reason to fit them. I have to question how useful they are anymore in combat. They were really built against the first generation IR manpads, Strela and Redeye. It would have had less performance against period Stingers, even less against ones today. Even if you successfully dampen the thermal signature of the engine, you still have all the leading edges on a helicopter you cant do anything about. Hope we are getting them for our Hind of course, they do look hellishly cool.

Im not sure its a problem for the pilot. Ive read there was a large mount of flash when the gun did not have such long barrels. But right up there at the front, the only person I could see might have an issue is the gunner, and I dont think that is going to be a big problem if he is looking through the optics.

Perhaps a study of the A10 colouring book is pertinent here. https://medium.com/war-is-boring/cold-war-coloring-book-taught-a-10-pilots-to-kill-soviet-tanks-a26385113bf0 I strongly suspect that if you shot an Abrams from the rear, you may knock out the engine, and possibly start a fire. In that regard I dont think its probably any different from any tank from the mid 70's on. Even on the wartime panthers they were putting armour covers over the engine deck fans to keep out stray rounds. Of course, its fairly pointless worrying about all this until they extend the damage model down to all the tanks and vehicles. There isnt much hurry as far as softskin kit is concerned, but It really is something that needs to be addressed before attack helicopters and attack aircraft can really authentically.

Transition from free flying to ground effect is quite violent.
stuart666 replied to Frag's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
Ive just been flying the Deployment campaign from the KA50 someone modified, with singular lack of success landing for the tail rotor problem, and im convinced you are right. The weight was about 108 percent of total, still overweight apparently after having gone on the mission and come back. I lowered it to 101 percent, went around the block, came in and landed first time without any LTE problems. I would not overook the possiblity that its also aggrevated by wind. I dont know if ED have modelled this yet or not, but I figure an aircraft with a tail rotor is more likely to be affected by wind than the KA50 would be. Anyway, I approached along the line indicated by a windsock, and that might have helped too. Its difficult to know what is really simulated and whats your imagination, but I certainly do agree being overweight is the main cause of the problem. -
Well done. There was also an East German film I was watching, its not a training film, but it does have some excellent footage of Mi8's and Mi24's on exercise.

Pity they didnt give you any of these to keep on VHS. I find it interesting the posted up footage of them with R60 racks. Supposedly it was a conversion that was relatively rare. Ill post any more up if I find them. Its surprising the stuff you can find on youtube sometimes.

Unfortunately is in Russian. Still the footage and the graphic overlays are still interesting.

They apparently had NVG's as early as Afghanistan too. I gather the latest hinds had to be modified to make the instruments easier to read, but seemingly that didnt stop them using them earlier. What we could really do with is a flare bomber routine, to make this kind of thing easier. Have an Antonov in a continual loop, making fair drops in a single location. It would be very useful.

I find if you get him to engage ground targets, he will start targeting targets of opportunity. Seems about the best he will do at the moment.
