  1. I was indeed, thanks for flagging it up. As for the value of its opinion, its now selling for over 120 pounds on Amazon, which considering it sold for only 30 pounds about 20 years ago should probably tell you something. But then Gordons works generally sell for ridiculous money. His book on the Mig21 is similarly priced. If you look on Archive.org, they actually allow you to read it for free online if you have a free account. Well worth it.
  2. Glad its of interest. Ive actually gone so far as to get the FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook, which has a lot of good stuff in it. You can download it for free off their website. https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/
  3. Awesome, thank you.
  4. This sounds like a great idea, but where is the Oil Wars campaign in the DCS directory? The DCS folder system is a nightmare to navigate.
  5. I never use the yaw channel personally, but ive had the spinning effect. I think it may well be VRS on the tail rotor. Hard opposite rudder and slightly reducing collective seems to fix it. There is a video here which seems to explain its occurance. The Hind it seems, is very squirrely in wind.
  6. It once did though. I was reading the other day, they dropped desants in the Shield 79 exercise, seizing vital river crossings. It seems likely with heavy losses in transport helicopters, it would have done that more and more often in any conflict with the west. Today, you are right, it seems never to be used. Im guessing its at least partly due to it requring a fairly slow and careful landing approach. The MI8 seems to be a lot better at assault landings, presumably due to its larger rotor disk. All that said, I was reading on Russiadefence.net that Russia may be looking at this again, for delivery vehicles for Spetsnaz teams. I think that might be the Mi35M though, which is modified to hover easier, and has other improvements like a rotor disk and transmission based on the Mi28. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
  7. From what ive read in the Yefim Gordon book (which is really excellent if you can still find it), the Soviet Air Force didnt reckon much to either the grenade launchers, or the gun pods in Afghanistan. So I think ED probably have modelled this fairly accurately!
  8. Im idly wondering if its down to graphics settings, some people seem to have this, others dont. It would be cool if the maps used for this were all Soviet Military maps.
  9. It is completely crazy that this is the only major combat sim in the last 25 years to model the Hind as a seriously modelled asset (OK so there is take on helicopters and Arma ) And ironically, in many ways it is reminicent of that earlier DI sim. I still have it in a box somewhere. I keep meaning to install it and see if it still works. Great memories, particularly the near impossiblity of landing that one too. As far as this iteration, I think petrovich is too good as a gunner, too bad as a pilot. I think the way the cueing of the gunner is done, im not a big fan of. Whats with the in helmet sight to cue the direction? Ive not read that the hind has anything like that. I would much prefer something with more sophisticated AI like the Heatblur setup, although Im sure voice attack would be a slicker way of employing the current system. All that said, its my favourite sim. Yes, even more so than the Mig21 and the F14 and the Huey. You can feel the weight of this thing when you throw it around. The speed of it is insane, the firepower makes you giggle like a litttle girl. The sound is probably the best ED have done yet, really reminicent of when 5 Czech hinds once flew over my house. And it doesnt even have R60 yet, which im sure will be hilarious to use in helicopter dogfights on the Nevada or Persian Gulf maps, flying around the cities. Its truly great work, and thanks to ED for putting so much into this one. We are getting so much Red Air now, we are really going to have to think about putting a 'Red Eagles' opfor unit together. The only way you can use these things the way they were intended is en mass after all.
  10. Apologies if this has been posted before. Its not just a walkaround tour, but its also a tour of the cockpit and a partial startup video too. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/H17sXrWgAgQ
  11. Have a look in the axis section of the configuration menu. it may be you have the axis setup on multiple controllers. For example, when I first plugged in my Thrustmaster, it binded the same axis with the rudder and throttle axis. If you deselect those and make sure you have the right axis on the right flight control,it may work a bit better. Hope it works out for you. Check out Chucks guide on the Huey, thats always a good read.
  12. I think that was only an MI35M thing. They cut the winglet down, so it wouldnt be quite as loaded at the wingtip as a Mi24P would be. The most ive seen is twin missile racks on each station.
  13. Yeah thats some of the stuff I scanned (as well as many other peoples as well). Its not all online at the moment, but its all obsolete in any case so no problems about classification. All tank nuts welcome on Tanknet. Yeah, thats part of the system for the MRS. Ive actually got a Shir1 and a Khalid manual upstairs, Ill take a look, but im near certain is on those too. Thinking on, Ive a nagging feeling that IFCS was fitted to Khalid when it was sold to Jordan, but that it was NOT present on Shir1 as built. Which would likely imply that Iranian Chieftain Mk5's didnt have it either. Surprisingly that thought never occurred to me before.
  14. I cant quite place the bit you mean, but there was a bit on the turret roof, to the 10-11 o clock of the commanders cupola facing forward, which I think was associated with the MRS. The little hole on the right side of the turret, to the right of the gun (again facing forward) was the gunners alternate sight. The laser of course was mounted in the gunners primary sight, which is presumably why they didnt dismount them to mount the II swap sight later on. If anyone wants to have a look at Chieftain details, please go and look at my manual thread on Tanknet.org. I will try and scan my Mk11 manual at some point.
  15. Ive been working on a Mod for Armored Brigade, and im almost certain thats right, it was Chieftain Mk5/4 that was fitted with the racks and had the IFCS upgrades to allow it to fire L23 APFSDS. Everything else earlier than that would have had L15 APDS, including the Iranian ones. Im pretty sure I read the Iranian Mk5's had TLS AND RMG installed, I think they may have envisaged using the RMG as a second COAX in an emergency. Although it really wasnt suited for that role, but hey, the Customer is always right. Mk3 had just RMG I believe. If the devs are ever interested in doing a proper sim of Chieftain, ive got the Mk2/3/5 and Mk11 manuals and associated RMG and IFCS manuals. Considering the amount of people that used it on the Middle East Map, it would be a good choice. Its all obsolecent now, we have no allies that still use it.
  16. I would have to hit the manuals, but I THINK the Mk7 was just an earlier verision (It may have been a Mk2 or Mk3) that had been updated to a Mk5 equivalency. After a while it got silly, so after another mod they all recategorized them as Mk9's, which again, this could largely cover for. Ive yet to check to see if its carrying a L23 or not. I cant remember what version of Mk5 got L23, Mk5/6 possibly? If they did a Mk10, they couldnt give it availablity to Iran. I think the latest the Iranians used was Mk5.
  17. Probably the wrong place, but the Chieftain is incorrectly captioned. Its not a Mk3, its a Mk5 judging by the MRS and the NBC pack on the rear. No biggie, iran used both, but it would be good to get it right. OTOH, its a really nice model. Ill look forward to the day when we get detailed armour models for these things.
  18. Just noticed this. Now that we are getting the Mariana's which features I believe at least one NAS, Im wondering if we will get something that will trigger the ADF and give us something to practice ILS approaches? Just an idle thought....
  19. Speaking for multiplayer, the F14 never seems to behave in a way that seems unlikely or ridiculous. I think FC is quite right, its overmodelling in other aircraft. I name no names, but its usually the same aircraft. I think there is likely going to be some attitude readjustment when the F15E drops. Keep up the good work fella's, its the most enjoyable dlc on DCS. I only fly this and the Mig21 now.
  20. Thank God ive got used to using autothrottle.
  21. Or Brian Blessed. 'HARM IS ALIVE!'.
  22. Im glad my Normandy templates are getting some use. I really must do a German radar template at some point. Someone was asking about the Normandy templates, you can find them here. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3309201/ https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3308975/ Something to fly the Mosquito through when it arrives....
  23. Well speaking for myself, im glad I bought the Mig21, and I hate and regret buying the F16. It ultimately comes down to what people want to fly. I dont think people fly just to be able to win in multiplayer. Although speaking as a Tomcat driver, its nice to do that as well.
  24. Thats right. When the cost started going through the roof, they were planning to do a variant with an austere radar (perhaps based on the F4) to get costs down. But the USMC decided to stick with the F4 at that point. It would be nice to have a Marine corp skin for the Tomcat, Im tempted to have a crack at one.
