  1. I think at high altitude, German fighters will be outclassed in a turn. Its kind of like the Tomcat, all that wing area, anything with high wing loading is just going to fall out in a turn. At low altitude, yeah, without the WM50 or whatever it is being overhauled, im sure it will be possible to catch. You have to wonder if ED are going to do any WW2 German radars, when we have something that will want to fly below it?
  2. They kept the MG's for aiming purposes or so ive heard. But yes, its a trivial amount of aircraft built. They achieved far more than their modest numbers would indicate, but the rocket equipped versions were far more flexible. Im genuinely stoked for the Mosquito, im really looking forward to it. In fact, its about the only DCS release in the near future (other than the Mig23) ive any interest in. Its certainly going to make the Normandy map much more interesting.
  3. It seems a number of the German airfields can be classed as relief, and would never have had hangars or facilities at all. http://www.ww2.dk/lwairfields.html Its interesting to note that some of them were never used by the Germans and were covered with anti glider defences and trenches. I guess they had more airfields than Luftwaffe by June 1944...
  4. You might would be best off with early variants of those from the cold war, it likely will be easier to get manuals for them. I dont personally have anything for M1 or Leopard 2, but ive got a T64A gunnery manual knocking around that might be good for symbology. Keep up the good work.
  5. Do drop me a line if you ever feel like doing a Challenger 1 or a Chieftain. Ive some manuals that might be of assistance. Very nice work btw.
  6. You're right, that is interesting. Thank you.
  7. Well there was that asset pack that showed apparently Asian markings. So it seems more likely to me its going to be Korea/Taiwan rather than say Kamtatcha/Aleutians. Which personally I think I would have prefered out the two because it would be wonderfully bad weather to fly the Tomcat in. Im a bit crushed actually. I was near certain it was going to be North Cape. :(
  8. Ive had this happen to me at least once as well.
  9. If its worth anything, I believe the real pilots complained about it as well. It makes it difficult to see in some light conditions.
  10. His book is a great read.
  11. I think it was 'The Final Countdown'. Unlike most people I associate the Tomcat with being a filmstar from THAT movie, not Topgun. And who wouldnt love it, sat there on the deck in the twilight, the truly evil looking skull and crossbones of VF84. And if that wasnt enough, it travels through time, tangles with zeros and shoots them down! Who wouldnt love that as a 7 year old? :D And it sums up the latter stages of the cold war. It highlight US Naval airpower in a way nothing else did, and there was scarcely a crisis it didnt seem to have some role or other in.
  12. For myself, the bits I like about the Tomcat are the archaic bits. The fairly naff hud, the wonderful steam gauges, the radar display that looks like a late 1970's arcade machine. The handling that seems more like a WW2 fighter than something from the early 70's. It makes it what it is. If people want it to look and fly more like a Hornet, the cynic in me says, well why not fly a Hornet? I bought it, gave it a handful of flights, then hung it up. For whatever reason, it does nothing for me. And thats despite loving the thought of zapping a harpoon into some poor warship. Of course, that doesnt mean people shouldnt get what they want. Im just wondering how the economics of this could possibly add up. it would take X amount of time to develop a sparrowhawk Hud, it would take y amount of income, if its not free, to buy. And its going to appeal to a z amount of the population. Same with the D. Is there really going to be THAT amount of people wanting it to pay what would I would guess be near full price for an air-frame that doesnt really do an awful lot more than what the B model does? I dont know. I personally wouldn't bother, but then I have the B model already. Im left with the feeling if Heatblur ever build a D, it would just be competing with itself for sales for the A and B model (a similar problem I guess Razbam faces if it ever does a Harrier B+). Of course, if it was free, Id probably fly it. And then go right back to the A or B, because its not like a Hornet. That in the end is why I fly a Tomcat, that and to annoy Dick Cheney. :) Thats before we even poke the classified bits with a stick, which I gather are not easily surmountable. Im not disrespecting all these threads about 'We want a D'. I want a Hawker Hunter, but you just have to be realistic about these things.
  13. Thanks to ED for sorting this out. This now sounds completely awesome, exactly as I remember seeing MH434 with Ray Hanna at the controls. Really great work fellas.
  14. But whats next, the Bell X1? TSR2? XB70? If they are going to launch a project based on such a few number of aircraft built, the sky is presumably the limit. I dont get the fetish for the D, I really dont. It wasnt THAT much more capable than the B, other than the flight control system. And I believe they bolted that onto A models late in its life anyway. Ive got the Tomcat I want. The only other Tomcat I would want is the Tomcat 21, and I blame Dick Cheney not Heatblur for that particular decision. :) No disrespect to anyone wanting a D btw. I just dont understand it.
  15. Hold my beer. :D My first sim was Psion's Flight simulator, which would be about 1982/83. My first Joystick was the Kempston Competition pro. All microswitches, but it was dirt easy to fix and rewire when it went wrong, and easy to mod and put in suckers to stick it on the desk. I wish I still had it. My first combat sim was digital integrations Fighter Pilot. God it was primitive, but didnt I think it was the bestest thing ever back in 1983. We have all come an incredibly long way.
  16. For a happy moment I thought we were getting a Zero for target practice. :(
  17. Just to check, you are moving the handle only after you have got the engines running? I find that I have to get the engines running first to get the power to do it, then the automatic button will only work after I press the master caution button. Ive not noticed another other problems with it personally. I never bother to use the VR controllers at all. They are pretty much useless with a hotas system, which is a shame. I like the point and shoot effect from them. Roll on cheap haptic gloves I guess.
  18. Im not certain of it enough at present to start a new report, but Ill experiment and keep and eye on it. I certainly shall if I can confirm it.
  19. If you have a vague idea of where it was on the Grumman website, put the address through Archive.org and see if they archived it. That is always a good source for dead web addresses.
  20. Although a fully armed Tomcat DID fall off the deck of a carrier back in the 1970's, so that is kinda realistic, if unwanted. :) Its a great sim. Ive bought other DLC, but to be honest, this is all im flying right now. Its just too much fun in multiplayer, particularly when you bag smug Hornet drivers with it.
  21. Ah, it was a halloween bug, gotcha. :D Well ive not noticed that lately so hopefully its gone away.
  22. That was on another server, and I think that was probably another problem. its not always that easy to tell in vr when you are at 20 percent. It may be the case that ive clicked on a throttle when I thought I was at 20 percent, but was in fact below it. What I normally do now is count to 5 slowly when I think its at 20 percent, and I know its there. Which begs the question. If you DO cook an engine, is it possible that, if you only change roles to another F14 slot, it may carry that damage across? I had the same problem occur two or three times on a carrier where one engine would start but the other would not. Not recently, but it has happened.
  23. Im glad it raised a smile.
  24. Oh dear, do I feel silly.... Ibellouny, thank you so much for that, you absolutely nailed it. The server didnt host the jets with fuel in them. This has been bugging me all weekend! Note to self, check the fuel gauges before takeoff. :D Sorry fellas for this, many thanks to you all for trying to clear it up.
  25. Yeah, pretty sure it was. I had it armed and fueled at the same time. This is really dispiriting that nobody else can replicate this. :(
