That's perfectly ok! :) To each his own, YMMV, etc... I said so in my post, and others have said the same. Resolution is better on a LCD screen. Plain and simple. That's not what makes VR great. Still, I got a 34" 3440x1440 curved LCD screen, that cost me more than my HMD, BTW. Sold it. Not interested! VR brings so much more to the table than a 2D screen that I will live happily with the resolution as it is. But that's me. Looks like VR HMDs are a hit. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next generation HMDs will have twice the resolution. I was going to wait for the Mk.II in HMD design, but that was before I actually tried a Oculus Rift CV1. ;)

What Atronut said. But you also need to enlarge the pics so that they show the cockpit in full scale. Viewing them on a small 15" laptop will give you the wrong impression, if you know what I mean...
-
Both Oculus Rift CV1 and the HTC Vive has a combined resolution of 2160x1200 (1080x1200 per eye).

Well... I have never used Helios or anything similar for the CDU, and I would imagine that being faster than using the mouse. I'm used to using the mouse with the TiR, and now I use mouse and Oculus, and this is easier with the Oculus. With TiR I often had trouble holding my head still long enough to hit buttons with the cursor. The TiR, of course, had a curve that allowed me to check 6 just by looking at the edge of my monitor, so it was a lot more sensitive. The Oculus is 1 to 1 in any movement, and the position tracking is rock solid. The TiR could sometimes pick up a reflection or one of the LED got blocked, causing positional chaos, especially when turning my head and leaning in on the cockpit. This never happened with the Oculus. So I find that using a mouse in VR view is easier than with a TiR, but I don't imagine it being as easy as using a touch screen or button box.

VR is awesome! Plain and simple. Now, if I could have a real cockpit, with working controls, instruments and what not, combined with a dome projection screen, I'd prefer that. I would. I don't have the realestate available to house a different cockpit for every DCS module, so it's out of the question. I have used TrackIR since the first version. In fact, I wrote the first review of TiR and flightsims for SimHQ, back when you used a mouse to pan around the virtual cockpit in IL-2. TiR was a gamechanger for flightsimming, and increased immersion profusely. A year ago I got a 21:9 34" curved screen, which also increased the sense of flying, by increasing the FoV. This summer I got to try an Oculus Rift CV1. I went straight back home and ordered one. I have no regrets. I have sold my 34" screen. Yes, resolution could be better. Absolutely! It needs a beefy PC. Using peripheral controllers like keyboard and buttonboxes is hard...er... It can be done. The human brain is quite amazing in that way. Ok, key combos on a keyboard is not optimal, but using a HOTAS and a buttonbox is totally possible. It's also possible to use a mouse to interact with the virtual cockpit. I have started to use a Logitech touchpad that works for me. It's not perfect, but it works well enough. But what's so amazing with VR is the way your brain is tricked into believing what it sees. You can totally see that you're in a computer flightsim. I mean, the graphics - good as they are - don't really fool anyone. But, since everything in the virtual world is where it's supposed to be, in percieved distance and location, you start believing it's actually there... Sounds crazy, right? I have several examples of reaching for the virtual canopy frame to get out of the cockpit. Slamming your head into the wall when trying to look over the cockpit sill, and not understanding why your head won't move past this obstruction you can't see. It's sick! It really is... The horizontal FoV in the OR closely resembles the FoV of my old 34" screen. But the vertical FoV is much better. What makes the VR view really stand out, besides everything being in 3D, is the size of everything. It's full size! Scale 1:1. I remember starting flightschool some 17 years ago. I was a flightsimmer long before I started flying for real. I thought I had a slight advantage since I knew my way around the cockpit of the Cessna 172, from MS Flightsim 98. That's until I realized that the instrument panel of my 14" monitor was significantly smaller than the real one. :) Now, if I had the Oculus back then..! The FoV in the Oculus (and Vive) isn't wide enough to go unnoticed. To me, it's like wearing glasses. If I focus on the frame of my RayBans, they are obstructing the view. But, I normally focus closer to the middle of the glasses to notice the frame. It's the same for the Oculus. The only time I'm somewhat bothered by the FoV in the Oculus is when I'm craning my neck to look over my shoulder, and my eyes are straining to look further back. Dogfighting in VR has become a much more physical exercise... ;) VR isn't perfect. Much like using a monitor (or 3) and a TiR has its pros and cons, VR make things better, and worse. To me, it's the next step forward, and I won't be going back. And I hope that we all will be laughing at the Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive in a few years, scorning them like we do 14" CRT monitors today...

No yaw or roll trim... No wonder the darned thing rolls! :-) I have bought the MiG-21 in DCS. I guess I have to give it a go! ;)
-
Really? I had no idea... What about rudder trim?
-
When flying real aircraft, and there's a unwanted roll, you use the aileron trim to cancel it. ;) It can be either your joystick that is slightly off center, or your rudder. Like the poster above stated, increas your deadzone, or do what I would do, trim it.

Yeah! I don't know why DCS does that? I have never seen a big black exhaust cloud when you come out of afterburner, IRL.

Option to set world scale / Enlarge / Reduce (airplane)
Goblin replied to misoswan's topic in Virtual Reality
I feel the scale is spot on in DCS. I use a Oculus CV1. I do need to move the virtual head slightly forward in some aircraft, or I will look inside the seat sometimes, but this is not due to scale. In Aerofly FS2, which have a scale adjustment, I needed to reduce the scale by 10%. A scale adjustment shouldn't be that hard to implement in DCS...? -
Bunyap said, in the vid, that Cobra has some texture work to do on the Viggen... I think I'll keep my pitchfork directed at you! Now get back to work! :)
-
Actually... My theory, and I can back this up with evidence, is that the AI in HL3 got to be so advanced that it became aware of its own existence and are now developing DCS modules, calling itself Leatherneck. I mean, do Cobra seem human to you..?

Sun-blinded at night!?
Goblin replied to TAW_Impalor's topic in Release Version Bugs and Problems (Read only)
I do! In the summer. But then again, I live north of the arctic circle ;) -
And none of the projects have been abandoned... Isn't that great? :)
-
LoL! That would keep me busy while waiting for the Viggen to be released all right...
-
Translation of the book, or the transcript? :) I can help with the transcript. Note that this is translated from russian to swedish to english ;) Soviet Controller: He lost speed, huh? Flagon Wingman: He was descending behind the Viggen. We increased the distance and he (Zjiguljov, the Pilot of the fateful Flagon) was above. He passed me and dove in behind the Viggen. He went out, and then this! I saw it all, even the splash. SC: You were both descending together? FW: I was at 200m altitude. SC: Are you sure about 200m? FW: No, he was lower, but I did not go below him. I was not below him, and the target was even lower. SC: You got the altitude 1000m. (Understood as a restriction) FW: (No reply) SC: What was the approximate target altitude? FW: The target was lower than I. Probably 100m, perhaps even lower.

Don't forget that LN was "forced" to announce the Viggen after the Steam leak. I don't think they intended to say anything until just prior to release.
-
Got the new book "Swedish Aircraft during the Cold War"... Not all about the Viggen, but a very interesting read. The 7.july 1985 Flagon incident is described here as well, with a transcript of what the Swedish Radio Surveillance heard the surviving Soviet Flagon pilot report back as he loitered the area and RTB. Don't know if this book makes the waiting harder, or easier..? ;)
-
That's epic, man! :) I have seen my share of Viggen airshows, both as a civilian living close to F15 in Söderhamn, and as a conscript at the same airbase. Nothing like it! A true crowd-pleaser. I remember, before airshow restrictions, how they used to start the Viggen show by having everybody look at a SAAB Safir SK50 slowly making its way towards show center... Then.... WHAMMO!!! A Viggen, low level from behind the crowd. :D As a conscript mechanic on the AJ37 I also got to see some tactical flying at the roadbases. There we were, filling and arming a Viggen, when all hell breaks loose and 3-4 other Viggens overfly the base in a coordinated attack. Those were the days. The memories... Waiting for the DCS:Viggen is tough!

Lynx Cockpit Utility Brick "Button box"
Goblin replied to LynxDK's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I hear ya, LynxDK! I built a ThrottleBox http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4266967/1/Building_the_ConTrollR... And while I lost count of all the money I poured into that project, I can say I was a lot more expensive than $300 :) I live in Norway, but I bought lots of hardware on ebay from asia and some parts from eastern europe. I have a huge respect for guys like Slaw, Milan, Baur and others, that do this for much better prices than I ever could. -
Totally agree, MMJ! It makes sense to avoid accidental ejections. So keeping the 3xCtrlE requirement is smart, but there should be an option when you assign a controller to this command.
-
And the best workaround is... MMJoy2. This is the firmware for microcontrollers, written by mega_mozg, and is the firmware I use for my ConTrollRhttp://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4266967/1 Just set one switch to ON/OFF repeat, and you have yourself a single switch Ejection button. :) But still... ED, it's a good idea to drop the 3x requirement for Ejecting, or just add a single command under VR. Because you don't have time to take off the HMD and look for CtrlE, much less hit it three times, when ejecting in VR.
-
Yes, but it doesn't solve the problem if you want to make an ejection handle...
-
Of course! That's it! Add a command under VR in the commands section that accomplish the same thing as 3xCtrlE but with a single press. This can't be that hard to do? I really don't want to rip my HMD off to find the keyboard to hit CtrlE three times when I just had a missile up my tailpipe. Finding the correct button on the HOTAS and press that one three times takes long enough... A single button, that when pressed once, starts the Ejection. Please, ED! :)
-
No, I haven't. But that's a good idea. Of course, there are workarounds to accomplish this. Some have been mentioned here. But I still think, in the interest of VR suitability, there should be an easier way to eject.
