You need to set up the encoders correctly. An encoder is always a a pair of buttons. Take a look at my setup. It's an older version of MMJoy, but in the encoders column, where you have: 01 02 03 04 05 06 There should be the buttons that are activated by the encoder. I have 5 encoders that are made up of the button pairs 25 31 26 32 27 33 28 34 29 35 See the difference?

I agree. It's hard to shake the sim feeling even in full size full motion sims... I don't peek very often either. Mostly when I need to find the ESC key to end the mission :) I know, I can map it... But immersion is great! I have reached for the virtual canopy frame to get up, and felt my heart rate increase in a virtual crash... I wrote it somewhere else on the forum, but you do see that you're in a sim. There's no denying that. Graphics ain't *that* good. But it's the depth of everyting, it's correct placement in the virtual world, that makes me believe in what I see. The fact that 3D makes me focus on the runway on short final, and the cockpit is blurred out, just like it is in real life... I just love it! No it's not perfect, but it's waaaay better than a 2D screen, IMO.

What is the current state of VR in DCS; was your headset worth buying?
Goblin replied to Jamesp1's topic in Virtual Reality
Let me put it this way, resolution is better on a 2D screen, so it's not the resolution that makes me choose VR over a regular screen. It's the combination of all that is VR that makes the experience so incredible. -
Well, as much as I love my Oculus Rift, and think it has elevated my flightsimming experience substantially, I have to say that I also agree with r@m. Interaction with controls has not been solved yet. Advanced clickable cockpits are a challenge to VR, and using a mouse is just a work aorund of sorts. Still, it's the best we've got at the moment, and it's a lot better than using a 2D screen and a mouse, IMO.

@red777 It's always interesting to read a different point of view. I'm not impressed with the resolution or the FoV of the Rift, either. But the 3D depth perception, 1:1 scale and head tracking is what makes VR so great, IMO. VR come with positives and negatives. I certainly feel the positive outweigh the negative. But this is of course very subjective, like you feel the weight of the Rift, and I barely notice it's there :) -
No. But it has a nasty tendency to enter a superstall, so it's not advicable to do it at lower altitudes. :)
-
And it can be performed with aircraft without flight computers... BTW, the SAAB J35 Draken did it way before Pugachev did it in the Su-27. :pilotfly:

Yeah, but still a partypoop... ;) I don't understand why people get so upset about a little hyping and trolling... It's all part of the game and good fun. Ok, another "two weeks ™". So what? I actually enjoy the pre-release buzz... It's a bit like the prelude to x-mas. :)

I don't think they will help us in the VR cockpit either... Not if we're using a HOTAS anyway. Letting go of the stick or throttle, pick up a touch unit, flip the switch, put the touch unit down and then gripping the stick/throttle again... It sounds too cumbersome to me.

I'd like to add, that don't be afraid to lower your settings in DCS to get better FPS. DCS on everything @low is still a very pretty sim. -
Thanks for your replies! I installed the Virtual Desktop, and with that on "start with windows" I could unplug my monitor, boot up the PC and start DCS from VR. There seem to be a slight performance degradation though. And when I exited DCS I was not returned to the virtual desktop, or Oculus home. So I guess I will still use a regular 2D screen for booting and such. Virtual Desktop seems like a very cool app though, well worth the $13. Lots of cool features like watching movies (2D or 3D, 360) and panoramic photos.

Because VR and Simpits aren't mutually exclusive. As I was trying to say in a earlier post, real controllers are important to VR users as well. VR has really cool 3D visuals, albeit with lower resolution, and really steady head tracking. The problem with VR is interacting with controls, since you can't see them. Today, the best option is to use a mouse (or similar) to interact with the VR cockpit. That and a programmable HOTAS. Now, peripherals with buttons and switches can be used in VR. It's just a matter of learning where they are IRL, and not move them :) Or, if the controller look the same, with the same dimensions, as the real life cockpit that's rendered in VR. I have built a 8 axis throttle, with buttons, switches and encoders. I use it in DCS while looking into my Oculus. Now, it doesn't cover all controls, and since it's not a replica, it doesn't fit with the visuals in VR. Your controllers probably would work better in that regard. It would be interesting to try those P-51 panels and place them where they "seem to be" in the VR view. I bet that after a little practise, you would find the controllers without having to lift the HMD. But for the controller to be effective in VR, it must be just like the real controller (providing that the 3D modeller made the VR cockpit according to the real life counterpart).
-
Ok, I haven't seen any of them IRL, just what's posted here and what hegykc writes about them.
-
Well, no, you don't have to use replica cockpit parts in DCS. It's totally possible to use a mouse to interact with the clickable cockpit. And this works even better in VR than with a TiR. But, exact replica cockpit parts, like the ones you're designing, do have a use together with VR and HMDs. Because of the 3D effect in VR you get a very precise feel for where the switch you're looking at, should be in reality. It's hard to explain, but when I look at a switch in VR, my eyes tell my brain, that again tell my hand, where that switch is. So I can reach out with my hand, without seeing it, and still find that swich, if it's there in the real world, and placed correctly in relation to the virtual cockpit that you see in VR. The guy that let me try his Oculus Rift was testing this concept by building a test cockpit with real controllers, for use with VR. He also has two real fighter cockpits that he has integrated into P3D.
-
Actually, during WWII and forwards, pilots used to practise finding every switch in the cockpit, with their eyes closed. Systems are a bit more complex these days, so I doubt it's still common practise. But you can use a mouse or touchpad, to interact with switches in the VR cockpit. Takes some getting used to, but works great once you get the hang of it.
-
A mouse, or touchpad, works great in VR. It also has the added bonus of not needing different hardware for each different aircraft module. A full size real cockpit with a 360 dome projection screen would be better than VR, but few people have the space available for more than one cockpit.

VR in DCS is awesome. I have no doubt it will become even better with refinements to the code and new hardware. I have no regrets buying a Oculus Rift CV1. -

Yeah! That's going to be incredible in VR! -
Ok, I use Win10, so that's not a problem.

Anybody use a virtual desktop for their VR HMDs? I only use my PC for games and sims. I'm thinking maybe I can ditch the 2D screen all together by using a virtual desktop app. I guess I would still need a 2D screen for making BIOS changes and when setting up a new PC and/or re-installing Windows. http://store.steampowered.com/app/382110/ https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/911715622255585/ Anybody got any experience with these apps? LoL! Just realized they are the same app... Well then, anybody tried it or know of another and better one..?
-
I don't think going back to 2D screen and TrackIR just to learn a new aircraft. If I have to RTFM I'd just pause and pull the HMD up. :)
-
Sacrifices has to be made, at the altar of realism... ;)
-
I do... Like I said in an earlier post, a full cockpit with a dome projection screen would probably be better. But apart from that, VR is the best thing that has happened to flightsims. But, then again, 3 or 4 screen setups with touchscreens, HOTAS and buttonboxes is also very cool, and has its advantages. And I can totally see why someone won't be prepared to ditch all that because of todays VR HMDs. It's not an option for me though. I've gone virtual, and found out that reality sucks! Won't be coming back. ;)
-
That's perfectly ok! :) To each his own, YMMV, etc... I said so in my post, and others have said the same. Resolution is better on a LCD screen. Plain and simple. That's not what makes VR great. Still, I got a 34" 3440x1440 curved LCD screen, that cost me more than my HMD, BTW. Sold it. Not interested! VR brings so much more to the table than a 2D screen that I will live happily with the resolution as it is. But that's me. Looks like VR HMDs are a hit. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next generation HMDs will have twice the resolution. I was going to wait for the Mk.II in HMD design, but that was before I actually tried a Oculus Rift CV1. ;)
