The Mirage is an excellent aircraft for learning DCS. It's clickable, but most of the switches are "set and forget," and it has an excellent autopilot to keep the plane in the air while you're messing with the systems. One more thing about the Harrier: the training missions are the best of any of the DCS modules. Baltic Dragon really raised the bar both with the content and volume of the training missions, as well as the option to fly abbreviated missions in different circumstances (e.g. night, crosswinds, etc.) to try different things.

The A-10A and A-10C are completely different experiences, not only because the A-10A is FC3 level (versus a full DCS level A-10C), but the employment is different. The targeting pod and integrated avionics make it a precision targeting aircaft best employed at high altitudes (versus the necessity of flying low with the A-10A). If you like the A model, the C is a no-brainer (though you can still use it like an A model). The AV-8B is a very mature module, and I have no qualms recommending this. The avionics are closer to the A-10C, though the HOTAS is more streamlined (just not as many options) and the targeting pod is not fully integrated into the HOTAS (as in the Real AV-8B N/A due to budget limitations). I actually prefer the Harrier to the A-10C due to the streamlined HOTAS. Finally, the Su-27 is a lot of fun to fly, but there are IMO no earth-shattering differences between the two if you already have the -33. I have them both as a FC3 owner.

DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
2.44 is released for DCS 2.5.6 users only. There are enough controller lua changes between DCS 2.5.5 and 2.5.6 that many aircraft don't have 100% compatibility between versions (probably closer to 90%). As such, only update if you are running the Openbeta or you are Jonesing for the VR improvements (at which point, don't use the LUA mods and keep using the 2.43 diff.lua files for individual modules). For VR Users: Import the latest UI Layer diff.luas for keyboard and joystick. Note that there are no longer separate diff.luas for VR0 and VR1. Here's a change log: Remapped VR specific UI commands to keyboard macros wherever possible to maximize profile integration. Applied Rudder Trim and Zoom Commands to replace SnapViews for VR users wherever possible. Fixed DBZ crash that could occur after swapping to a profile that doesn't utilize an airbrake. Fixed bug with airbrake when Allow Flashing MFD LEDs on Transitions is set to -1. Fixed Analog-Pulse type airbrake when Allow Flashing MFD LEDs on Transitions is set to 0. F-14: Added TCS FOV to pilot controls (requires included Controller LUA mod or H0RN4T's FLIR mod). AJS37: Remapped CM switch on S3+H4U/D (removed CM Switch S3+H4P position). AV-8B: Fixed orientation of NWS switch (Warthog) JF-17: Added UFCP and "Dobber" functionality to S3+H2. Added external lighting switches to Warthog Throttle and RMFD (for Cougar users). C-101: Added Trigger and Pickle safety commands to S3+H2U/D and performed minor remapping for updated LUA files. Fixed LOSB3 mapping when Master Arm enabled. M-2000C: Added emergency throttle to Left Throttle axis (Warthog). Updated T1/SC/H2 mapping to account for new TDC Press/Radar mode selection in DCS 2.5.6. Added user-selectable countermeasure programs to S3+H4. Updated bindings since 2.43: UI Layer, A-10C, F-86, C-101EB/CC, Bf109, AJS37, F-14, UH-1, JF-17, F-16 (MFD3), M2000C Updated SnapViews since 2.43: None Updated Custom Luas since 2.43: AV-8B, F-14, UH-1, M2000C- 2261 replies

Thanks for the compliment! The MFD insert is the same for all FC3 aircraft. The only change you'll see between FC3 aircraft is if you have the HOTAS overlay displayed with MFDisplay. No problem there!- 2261 replies

Technically inclined, but lacking SA
Home Fries replied to station2station's topic in New User Briefing Room
My best advice when learning BFM is to start against inferior aircraft. This way you can develop the SA that comes with seeing angle-off, when to go into lag pursuit, and a general sight picture without having to worry about reacting. Start with a bomber and work lead turns and intercept angles. Then go against something like a Su-25. Then work your way up from the easier to the more difficult fighters. You'll see your SA improve as you recognize situations and angles, so you'll be ahead of the tactical scenario instead of reacting to it. -
Awesome!

Could be a Windows 10 issue with the Microsoft Store that causes duplicate controllers and may prevent integration. I’m at work right now, but there is a link to that thread in the CTS Setup PDF (troubleshooting appendix).- 2261 replies

DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
The DirectX profile is intended as a catch-all for modules that don’t have specific profiles. It just has DirectX buttons and modifier combinations along with the global profile conventions (e.g. landing gear, flaps, wheel brakes, etc.). You can assign the engines and aircraft type in CTS but this is fixed. You can not duplicate the profile and have 2 DirectX profiles. However, since both the Yak and CE are single engine prop you should be ok sharing them, though the yak has retractable gear and the CE is fixed. Honestly, the DirectX was something I put in early on that I haven’t really kept up as it never seems to get used.- 2261 replies

Brother Mower, it's been a while! Using Foxy shouldn't be an issue. ANTELEV is mapped to one of the sliders (can't remember which one), so just go into the DCS Options menu, select controllers, select F-16C, select the Axis category, then find the Antenna Elevation axis. Select the axis in the Cougar column and move the ANTELEV knob until it maps to the axis.- 2261 replies

All, Today I updated the DNS address for CTS. Please run the CTS updater as a normal update. This should pull the new DNS into the config file before the old DNS address expires. You'll know you were successful if the first line reads "DNS Update" in the text once you finish the update. Be sure to do this for both the 2.5.x and legacy versions of CTS. I will also be updating the installer soon as well to reflect this change.- 2261 replies

DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
All, Here's an update on version 2.44: 2.44 is functionally complete and has been thoroughly tested. I was hoping to have it out by now, but the transition to 2.5.6 breaks some script compatibility with 2.5.5. As many people are still using 2.5.5 for multiplayer stability, I am hesitant to release the update until either 2.5.6 becomes more multiplayer-stable or is released on the Stable Branch. Additionally, societal effects from the Wuhan Coronavirus has increased my real-life workload, further affecting my release timeline. As a result, I can't say exactly when 2.44 will be released, only that it is ready to go and will be released when the time is right. Some things to look forward with 2.44: Revamped VR mapping to take advantage of keyboard commands (no more VR0 and VR1 diff.luas). Near-global mapping of VR Zoom, Spyglass Zoom, and Rudder Trim in lieu of SnapViews for VR users. Pickle and Trigger Safety switches added to C-101. Emergency Throttle added to the M-2000C (Warthog only). External Lighting and UFCP functionality added to JF-17. Thanks again for your patience and understanding.- 2261 replies

[Collections] What you want to be able to bind in keyboard/device
Home Fries replied to uboats's topic in JF-17 Thunder
Next on my list (in addition to Master Caution mentioned above) are the HUD display switches on the forward right horizontal panel and the "Trainning" and "Combat" master buttons that automatically switch on the appropriate systems. (also on the forward right horizontal panel). I'm looking to map those to the RMFD on my TARGET profile. -
TM Warthog afterburner detent curve for Jeff
Home Fries replied to killkenny1's topic in JF-17 Thunder
My curve is very close to Tippis' ["curvature"] = { [1] = 0, [2] = 0.05, [3] = 0.1, [4] = 0.17, [5] = 0.28, [6] = 0.4, [7] = 0.52, [8] = 0.64, [9] = 0.76, [10] = 0.88, [11] = 1, }, I hit the WH detent at the same point the in-game throttle starts to go "up and over" -
DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
The FAST middleware is fairly unstable and will crash under high CPU loads, and will become more unstable with repeated profile loading and unloading. You're right that it's way overdue for a fix. The bug that causes crashes whenever 2 LEDs are changed at the same time has been there from day 1 (and one of the reasons the LED programming is as tricky as it is where I put in 50ms delays for every LED action).- 2261 replies

Update won't do anything about that; it may be the profile dumping. Try restarting the profile, or restarting the PC if restarting the profile doesn't work. Server should also be up again.- 2261 replies

DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
Thanks for the heads-up on this change. I definitely want to keep target lock on H2U because TDC Press will often slew the cursor for warthog users. I'll definitely have a shift/tempo function for TDC Press and STT/TWS toggle, but I'll have to see what works best. I may have it as selectable in CTS options as well. I'll have to play with it when it changes to see what works best.- 2261 replies

Requesting woman with torchlight rake as unit in combined arms
Home Fries replied to deadpool's topic in Chit-Chat
I honestly don't know. Fentress is rural, so there's no point in "zoning", i.e. no point in designating surrounding land for non-use because somebody might get ticked. There are plenty of houses near the NAS Oceana runway thresholds, and you don't get crazies going to their rooftops to lase incoming birds there. Loud jets have been around since turbojets of the 1950s (louder than the turbofans we have now), but I figure that people may have been spoiled when Oceana was mainly a Tomcat base. Some people around Fentress were lauding the retirement of the tomcat thinking that the hornet (being smaller) would be quieter. Not so -- the hornet has a much lower bypass on its turbofan than the tomcat, and is noticeably louder! I figure most people living in the area accept it with the territory, or those who toured the house to buy did so in the daytime. Then you have the people who are perpetually angry at everything. EDIT: Regarding whether anybody noticed or whether it was a big deal, I'm sure it was a big enough deal if the pilot (or WSO) called it over the radio or mentioned it in debrief. In the macho, show-no-weakness culture of a ready room, a "snowflake" move of calling in an innocuous old lady with a flashlight would likely earn somebody a new callsign (heck, "Snowflake" could even become the callsign). Military aviators are safety-conscious to a person because the job is dangerous enough without giving Uncle Murphy a head-start, so if this was called in it was a legitimate safety concern. This also differs from a BBQ in the backyard with two major factors: 1) the backyard party is a "normal" source of light (house lighting, backyard, and a notable landmark in the pattern), and 2) the big difference between a backyard party and a light is the malicious attempt to disorient and potentially kill the aircrew. They weren't just arresting some crazy bat with a broom - they were also deterring others from endangering aircrews that just want to get home to their families. -
Requesting woman with torchlight rake as unit in combined arms
Home Fries replied to deadpool's topic in Chit-Chat
Here's the thing: at night, you can't tell the difference between the ocean and the sky. The whitecaps look like stars and vice versa. It's disorienting as hell, to say the least. It's why we train in that environment. While Fentress isn't as bad as a black ocean, it's not like landing near downtown either. The field used for FCLP isn't lit up like a Christmas tree because 1) too much light would ruin night vision and 2) it simulates the carrier (which observes light discipline to prevent visual detection). Approaching the 90 at 400 feet in a bank and having someone deliberately try to disorient you with a light is unsettling at best and outright dangerous most of the time. Note that the Navy didn't lose any jets or cause any mishaps due to this (the pilots are very good), but the job is dangerous enough without having some crazy hag trying to kill us on final to boot. OBTW, lasers are very nasty. We used to fly with "laser goggles" when we would do low passes on ships of certain foreign nations. -
DCS World TARGET profile for TM Cougar and Warthog + MFDs
Home Fries replied to Home Fries's topic in Thrustmaster
Thanks. Just fixed it for the next release. In the meantime, you can go into the DCS_I16.tmc file and change the values on lines 58-59 from 0 to 1, e.g. BrakeOnCycleTime = 1; BrakeOffCycleTime = 1; That should at least prevent the DBZ error.- 2261 replies

The I-16 shouldn't have an airbrake, so somehow the airbrake routine wasn't cleared out completely on the I-16 profile init. Which profile were you using prior to switching to the I-16? This will really help me run the issue down.- 2261 replies

First, thank you so much for adding the switches for the external lights! I'm enjoying it a lot. However, there are two minor bugs in the switch mapping: Anticollision and Tow positions are reversed in the options menu (e.g. selecting anticollision will set the switch to Tow and vice versa). The Nav Flash/Steady switches to flash, but releasing the command returns the switch to neutral intead of "Steady" (though the lights themselves work). Best, HF
