  1. I agree, the water hammer effect of a near miss is sometime more likely to sink a ship than an actual hit.
  2. The only British ship sunk by a Unexploded bomb was HMS Antelope and that was because it exploded while it was being disarmed. Every other ship hit by a bomb that didn`t explode survived and was repaired.
  3. That's interesting, have a slightly different one here: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=MTs75lKbFSIC&pg=SA8-PA30&lpg=SA8-PA30&dq=radar+offset+bombing&source=bl&ots=swU2VWqWY_&sig=VdH8GEdavxhBfeuvTbsSKWtP2yA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=q8pSUZ3uNInW0QXm8oDQBg#v=onepage&q&f=false
  4. If they make it there is one thing it has got to have, otherwise its not a A-7....lots of dirt:)
  5. The Chinese version of this, the Silkworm was shot down by HMS Gloucester in the first Gulf War with Sea Dart, still the only instance of a ship base SAM shooting down another missile in combat.
  6. If you are creating missions yourself set the 10m wind speed to 10 or 12 mps in the weather options and it will blow the smoke from your line of sight.
  7. Cheers guys
  8. Does any one know any servers that are happy for people to play Combined Arms on? I have been on VSAAF`s server but I get the impression that they aren`t overly keen on people using CA as they have scripts running on the ground elements.
  9. Thanks for the replies
  10. Is the DCS world we have Flat or Round? And is this the same for both the current maps.
  11. No a Canard is a flight control surface mounted at the front of an aircraft, you are probably seeing the intakes adjusting for angle of attack.
  12. I grew up in Sutton Bridge, I spent many happy hours at the Holbeach range.
  13. Surely by doing the GR9 they are doing exactly this, as many of the conflicts it took part in the opposing equipment is present. A Sea Harrier/Gr3 would need any of Mirage III/Dagger, Skyhawk, Super Etendard, Pucara, Turbo Mentor or Canberra as adversaries. I think the only aircraft from the Falklands conflict we currently have is the Hercules. Also apart from the SA7 none of the Air defence systems are present.
  14. I`m pretty sure this is not the case. The only operational use of the single mode Brimstone ( or more accurately dual mode Brimstone in Radar mode) was in Operation Ellamy in Libya and Harriers didn`t take part in this. This so far has been the only use of Brimstone in salvo mode. I think the confusion occurs because the MOD release a video of the first operational use of Brimstone (dual mode) from Afganistan, and described this in error as being fired from a Harrier. In fact it was from a Tornado. A Brimstone salvo is a pretty impressive sight: [ame] [/ame]
  15. Apologies if this has been answered in another thread, does this mean that the existing AI tanker in game will get a drogue attatchment?
  16. I haven`t seen the first video for many years, I used to have it on VHS. The most interesting thing in the video was the radar/moving map display and the attack symbology in the tab.
  17. The Gr1 could with TIALD
  18. Russian cruise missile hits flats in Arctic accident http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35106935 No one hurt thankfully.
  19. If you want the definitive technical account of Sead I would get Iron Hand: Smashing the Enemy's Air Defences by Anthony M. Thornborough and Frank B. Mormillo. Its a brilliant book. Another word on authors, I can get past the writing style in most cases, but I read Hajo Herrmann`s Eagles Wings a little while ago and developed a deep dislike for him as an individual. I kinda regret buying his book, even though it was an interesting read.
  20. You are weird..... me too:joystick:
  21. I know what you mean, you get the impression unless you were a Viper Pilot it wasn`t a good experience being in the same room as Dan Hampton, but I still enjoyed his book. Nigel Ward(don`t mention the RAF in his presence) and even more so Jerry Pook (don`t mention the Royal Navy in his :)) come across to a lesser extent like this in their books. I think some of them are written with the intention of settling some old scores. Strangely people like Eric Brown and Pierre Clostermann come across as quite humble in comparison.
  22. The answer is... it depends:smilewink: They are able to hover and take off vertically, but this is dependant on weight. For example the maximum vertical take off weight is about 21,000lb, the empty weight of the Harrier (2/av8b) is about 14,000lb , which leave 7,000lb split between fuel and weapons, so it either will not be able to go very far or carry many weapons. For a rolling take off the max weight goes upto 31,000lb a big difference, which is why they normally employ a rolling take off and vertical landing. As for the water again it depends, the Mk105 and Mk107 Pegasus doesn't need to have water injection to maintain a hover, but it helps at certain atmospheric temps to improve engine performance/life.
  23. Have you read it yet? Viper pilot was excellent and I was thinking about getting this.
  24. When dcs F/a-18 is released and we have Air to Ground radar simulated accurately the Tornado would also be a must have module for me.
