Thanks for the reply Zeus, another quick question what is the tl;dr version?
-
Great Video. Can I ask a question about ARBS and ccip. My understanding of ARBS was that it needs a ground lock to calculate a release point. I didn`t realise it could be used with ccip, how does this work?

Is Pegasus bridge on the Map?
-
Interesting video, has some Blue Vixen Radar displays from 2:00 mins onwards
-
Also the Blue Vixen Radar was the most advanced radar in Europe at the time, way ahead of the APG-65, with performance comparable to APG-73(Vixen could track 28 targets and had 11 modes of operation). it went on to form the basis for CAPTOR used in Eurofighter Typhoon.

We have a Pegasus engine where I work, its an incredible piece of engineering.

There was a lot of concern within the RAF in the 1960 and into the 70`s about the viability of conventional runways and the ability of the enemy to put them out of action, in fact the main role of the Tornado was anti runway with jp233. This was re-enforced by the experience of the Six day war. You have to remember the mentality of the time was that within a couple of days of a conflict starting on the central front, the main runways and the ancillary buildings of most major airbases would be destroyed or rendered unusable by area denial munitions. They were expecting the only facilities that would survive would be the harden aircraft shelters and short lengths of taxi ways. The fact that the Tornados short range placed their Airbase within strike range of most of the Soviet tactical airforces reinforced this concern The Tornado specification took a lot from the original TSR2 spec i.e. the ability to operate from austere bases with short runways and limited ground support. The use of the thrust reverser, at the time, made perfect sense in this overall context.

Did you get my reply, can`t work out if it sent or not

Focha, nice pictures, I have been thinking of making a 1/48 Corsair model for a while, a Portuguese one would make an interesting example.

There were a few interceptions when the main task force had sailed South in April, a Argentine 707 in civilian markings approached on a number occasions, but because they were not military aircraft no actions was taken. When it became clear that a peaceful solution wasn`t going to happen it was made clear through diplomatic channels that any further approaches would be shot down. No more were sent. The picture below is from the side camera of Lt Simon Hargreaves Sea Harrier, taken prior to this warning on the 21st of April.
-
This is kinds true, the Atlantic Conveyor sailed to the South Atlantic with replacement Sea Harriers and most of the GR1. They used empty containers to provide protection to the aircraft and had a spot at the front to fly the aircraft from. The Gr1 were wrapped to protect them from corrosion. Because the Argentine Air Force had demonstrated the ability to intercept ships head South it was decided to have one Sea Harrier Armed and ready to go on the Spot. No missions were flown and when the were in range of the task force the Harriers departed. Tragically the ship was hit by 2 missiles on the 25th of May and lost a couple of days later.

This thread is really good, its really interesting to see how a module is put together.

Does anyone know if the AV-8b FLIR used by the Marines has the heat source indicator feature in the HUD that the British version has. Its a pretty cool feature.

This is a common tactic, and also something the RN has done in combat ( one of the few navies to face a antiship missiles in combat) This is from the account of HMS Glamorgan in the Falklands being hit by an Exocet: Before the missile impact, the ship was moving at high speed. After the ship executed a rapid turn away from the missile in the limited time available, a few seconds, the Exocet struck the port side adjacent to the hangar near the stern. The turn had prevented the missile from striking the ship's side perpendicularly and penetrating; instead it hit the deck coaming at an angle, near the port Seacat launcher, skidded on the deck, and exploded. This made a 10 by 15 feet (3.0 m × 4.6 m) hole in the hangar deck and a 5 by 4 feet (1.5 m × 1.2 m) hole in the galley area below, where a fire started.

That's interesting, I bought this same kit a couple of months ago from my local model shop ( they had it on offer). When I eventually got round opening it up, it had about £30 worth of eduard Photoetch in it. I assumed that Revel had put it in, clearly not.
-
Can I ask you when you bought the kit did it come with any extra eduard photo etch brass in the box?
-
Great job what scale is that?

Rolls-Royce Merlin and Negative G

I suspect you will find very few combat reports (if any) of this happening, because as it was a know problem with the engine the pilots knew they needed they had to perform a half roll before starting a dive. -

In addition to Emu recent post it looks like the upgraded Asraam will still use a IR seeker rather than the RF seeker used by Camm (Sea Ceptor etc), it would be interesting to know if the upgraded Asraam will have the Camm 2 way data link. https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/uk-orders-advanced-asraam-weapons-for-f-35b-428544/ -
Su24 low pass over USS Donald Cook (missile destroyer)
whiteladder replied to Elwood's topic in Military and Aviation
I think the point is (what ever the actual type is) that jamming a ship doesn`t get you splashed across every news outlet around the globe. The point of this mission (political) is made by any aircraft coming that close to the warship and being photographed. -
