In an article I read some time ago it was said that when the Iranians ran out of AIM54's they strapped HAWK SAM missiles under the cat and managed to use them effectively in AA combat. I don't know if this is true, but it does sound cool, and funny :). To bad I lost the source, but if I find it again I'll post it here.

In SP missions and campaigns it is important to have a good story and immersion. Like others said some activity in your area or static objects to make you feel like you are in a living environment. I don't mind having to fly a little while to get to my target as long as the mission is survivable. I don't want to fly the same mission over and over again for 10 times because I get my ass handed to me every time. Furthermore pay attention to the flight path! Some time ago I flew the Su27 Fortress Mozdok campaign and in one of the missions we were flying a little while to the CAP area close to the border. But just on the other side of the line was a SA-10 or SA-11 lighting me up for 15 minutes straight and the RWR kept screaming at me. Needless to say this gets annoying REALY fast. Another gripe is the AI. This has been said many times but I'll point it out again. In the Over the Hump campaign for the MiG29 there is a mission in which you have to escort a flight of SEAD SU25T's to the target (SA-11). I've struggled with this mission to get all the fighters out of the way. So I had to do this mission a few times to get the hang of it. But when I finally manage to fend of the fighters and my SEAD friends get to their target, I still fail the missions because they can't hit the broad side of a barn (or they dump all their stores if an enemy is spotted at all). If this happens once, ok things happen. But to have this happen over and over again gets old pretty fast. My point is, don't make people fly the same mission over and over again because the AI fails to get the target. So either make a Backup Plan, or make a mission to cover that possibility. Repeating a mission 10 times is a good way to get people to abandon your campaign. A few things that benefit a mission or campaign in general are: Good briefing with clear objectives. And for gods sake, if you make a mission for example a MiG21 or F86, mark the waypoints on a map or picture! Don't say the target is on WPX without marking it. Not every plane has a TAD or digital map. Give directions or let GCI guide you but don't send people in the woods without a route. Documentation is a good bonus, but should be a support/add-on. A mission should be playable without reading 50 pages of documentation. Furthermore randomisation of units can help keep the mission fresh. But for the most part: Keep it fun!

[MiG-21 BiS] ASP Block Mod
Dutchy93 replied to Mainstay's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Hello Mainstay, I know how to work with layers in GIMP. I used to make skins for IL-2 1946 and I've attempted to do the same with DCS (that is I didn't get the shape right but the skins work), but those skins only applied to external skins. I've never messed about with cockpit textures, different sorts of TGA-files and the likes. And if I did, there was some sort of tutorial available to give me something to go back at. So in a way: Yes I know how to work with GIMP and layers (just not expert level) but the point is I don't know where to look for the bits and pieces of info I am missing. And in a way I am also stepping into new territory here. -

I tried your suggestion LegoHeli, but it did not seem to work. No matter what I do I get either of these outcomes in which the latter shows a tiny bit of result. Is this becouse GIMP isn't the correct tool to use and I should use Photoshop or am I doing something wrong? anyway thanks for your help and suggestions. https://www.dropbox.com/s/chqpyi9pru1xw19/Screen_150204_111417.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/t4tp16zpxo8ozye/Screen_150204_111933.jpg?dl=0 -
[MiG-21 BiS] ASP Block Mod
Dutchy93 replied to Mainstay's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Thanks for the help LegoHeli, that got me started. But I noticed that every texture in that cockpit folder is a .tga.dds file. Any idea how I could get my texture to pop up the right way with the right settings? Can I do this with DXTBmp? or do I need a different program? -

Hey Mainstay, I like what you did with the texture on the gunsight. But I now I want to add my own flair to it, but I don't really know how to do that and where to place the pics. I want to swap out the girl pic with something else. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I am using GIMP Thanks for the help! -
Did you activate the electronic/avionics of the plane? (Default RShift+L). If not than there is your problem.
-
The only "issue" I have is with the IR/SAR switch and the hardpoint selector. Those can cost you your plane in an AA fight. Sometimes you just want to switch fast. But the radar, gear and whatnot is just easy enough for me to do with the mouse. You won't be touching those switches that often anyway. Well radar maybe but that's the exception.
-
I don't really get the problem here... The only "issue" (if you can even call it an issue) I have with the gun cam is that it doesn't really do anything besides sitting there, which is fine by me. But come on guys, this sim is amazing. It is the best you can get at this time on the general market! I am actually surprised to see someone nitpicking like this over an insignificant tiny detail. If I had to dig into the loadout menu/mission builder to change the availability of the cam I wouldn't even bother to do it. And I would say to LN not to spend time on this thing unless they've got nothing better to do, which I can hardly imagine. I mean no disrespect to anyone here I am just saying: Be glad we have this MiG, fly it to the edge and beyon and enjoy yourself! It is the best plane to date and the most realistic sim, aside from climbing in the cockpit yourself... With that said I am signing off. Cherio:pilotfly:

Well, my bombs either fall short or go way over the target. The closest I got was around 300m or so. I guess I just have to practice. I thank you for your answer. I shall try your method when I get around to it.

I have this too. When I idle my engine I get severe FPS loss. say about 2 frame a second or even less. This is how I ended op being wrecked at final. But oddly enough this only happens in flight. When I start up my engine (cold start) I have no issues.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but in my case I only experience performance loss in MP. When I load in any pit (A-10C KA-50 or FC3), the loading finishes in under 30 seconds before I can do anythin. The MiG 21 is another story. After waiting for 5-10 minutes of loading before I could do anything (look at map or scoreboard ex.) I gave up. In singleplayer the pit loads under 30 seconds regardless of settings. I don't think this is a hardware issue, I have a i7 core combined with a GTX860m card. If this has been said before, please ignore. Otherwise this might be usefull info. I love the MiG and I want to take it up against others, but this isn't funny anymore. Guess I'll have to fly other fighters in the meantime.

Well what do you know.... One minute you place a link to a vid and the actual author just peeps around the corner right after you. It's a small world after all:music_whistling:.

For anyone interrested in the F15C's radar, look to this guys video's. Its made for FC2, true but most of the mechanics still work for DCS. It gives you a basic understanding of how the radar works. This is a 3 video series. It'll take about 45 mins of your time, but believe me when I say its worth it. Good luck:

I'm sorry to hear that Skate. I wish you strength to get through this ordeal.

I'm glad to see that you had a good time! The experience you described was what I was going for, challenging but not too hard. And thankyou for bringing up these issues. The helo path should be an easy fix, but I wonder what went wrong at the end of the second tasking. You should've gotten a message telling you to RTB, followed by a nice tune. Guess I'll have to dive into that one. I shall adress these issues asap.
-
Had thought about it but that would mean that a SAR helo MUST be availible during the mission. One of these days I'll make a resque UH-1 availible if this is wanted. But the sole purpose of the helo in this case is to grab the pilot and get out. not much else to do. And helo's won't be able to reach the secondary tasking without a very long flight. but again; if people want it I can make it flyable

Thanks for telling me. Such an obvious thing went just by. I edited the discription with the above mentioned parts. Gibo: I am glad you enjoyed it! But what went wrong with the no TGP run? Were the red-smoke markers missing? Thanks for trying the mission!

Did anyone try this mission? Is there any feedback?

FlyNate: I'll see if I can come up with something.
