  2. 600 miles from the front lines is not a forward base for tactical operations by Fw190s. II./JG300 was a an Reich Air Defense unit. The Defence of the Reich (German: Reichsverteidigung) is the name given to the strategic defensive aerial campaign fought by the Luftwaffe over German-occupied Europe and Germany itself during World War II. Its aim was to prevent the destruction of German military and civil industries by the Western Allies. Yes when the Allied front lines were close enough in late 1944 and 1945. Achery and Aigny Fr. would be a forward bases.
  3. Löbnitz and Finsterwalde are ~1000 - 1100km (over 600miles) from Paris. The Germans surrendered Paris Aug 25 1944. That is well beyond the combat radius for the Fw190A. I guess some might consider those forward airfields.
  4. So D-Day was in 1945 then as that is when the P-51 44-72339 was delivered in Jan 1945 to an AF you state didn't use 150 fuel. Not many 9th AF, and 2TAF, missions flown into Germany prior to D-Day. Targets were in France and the Low Countries.
  5. What would become O'Hare October 1945 buildings there since 1943
  6. II./JG300 was stationed at the following air fields in Oct 1944. Would be a stretch to call them 'forward airfields'. Löbnitz (GER) (51 34 50 N – 12 29 25 E) General : operational airfield (Einsatzhafen) in Saxony 33 km SSE of Dessau, 29-30 km N of Leipzig, 12 km NE of Delitzsch and 2.5 km SE of Löbnitz. History : laid out in 1938-39, but no evidence found of operational use until fall 1944 when it became a fighter station. Surface and Dimensions : grass surface measuring approx. 1145 x 355 meters (1250 x 390 yards) with an “L” shape. No paved runway. Infrastructure : no hangars or workshops, but several small buildings off the NW corner may have been used for temporary accommodations. Nearest rail connection in Düben, 8 km ENE of the landing ground. Dispersal : there were at least 7 aircraft bays cut into the woods off the S boundary (Feb 45). Operational Units : II./JG 300 (Oct 44 – Apr 45); III./JG 4 (Apr 45). Finsterwalde (GER) (51 36 30 N – 13 44 20 E) General : airfield (Fliegerhorst) 104 km SSE of Berlin, 45 km WSW of Cottbus in Brandenburg; airfield located 3.6 km SSE of Finsterwalde. History : construction began in late 1934 or early 1935 and it was named a Luftwaffe Fliegerhorstkommandantur by fall 1935. http://www.ww2.dk/Airfields%20-%20Germany%20%5B1937%20Borders%5D.pdf
  7. As for the Special Project Number on ETO a/c, this was for a/c that were to be shipped to GB that had been modified at the factory for using 150 fuel. North American P-51D Mustang 44-72035 "Jumpin Jacques" is a P-51D-20-NA model, built at North American’s Inglewood facility in California. Accepted by the USAAF on December 21 1944 as 44-72035 she was originally earmarked for service with the Eighth Air Force in England but this was quickly changed to Project Number 91037R, indicating service in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. Project Numbers were like Zip Codes indicating where an a/c was to be shipped. 44-72339 1945: Jan 07, Del. USAAF 8th AF Command Flown by Lt Hjalmar Johnsen, 401st FS, 370th FG, 9th Air Force

  9. The Lw still had some teeth in the ETO. Fighters Aug lost 613 out of 1491 on hand Sept lost 400 out of 1314 on hand Oct lost 499 out of 1332 on hand Nov lost 363 out of 1360 on hand Dec lost 464 out of 1370 on hand In one of my 109 books it lists 109 aces. I was surprised at the number of 109 aces with 50 or more claims that survived the war. It was 2/3rds of them.
  10. This is the RL pilot training manual http://www.deutscheluftwaffe.de/archiv/Dokumente/ABC/a/Alliierte/P%2051%20Pilot%20manual.pdf
  11. Why should the Gs and Ks be better than the 262, from the same manufacture? Graph in the Radinger/Schick's "Me 262" book. The graph was based on 125 series-production aircraft tested at 1 km height during acceptance testing. The speed ranges from 740 km/h for the slowest to 880 km/h for the fastest aircraft.
  12. One would hope so.:)
  13. Please note the source and the 445mph for a idealized production Spitfire IX. Maybe the previous 6 pages of the document can be posted.

  16. BS.543 was built as a Mk V, converted to Mk IX (Merlin 61) at Rolls Royce, Hucknall. First flight 22-10-42. Transferred to AFDU, Duxford 8-11-42; AAEE, Boscombe Down 13-12-42 with Merlin 66 installed; Vickers Armstrong 22-2-43; 403 Sqdn. 9-6-43; 611 Sqdn. 10-6-43; 485 Sqdn. 6-7-43. Failed to return from operations 22-8-43. I could find no reference to an experimental prop and overly rich mixture. Certainly not a prototype a/c as it FTR on a combat mission while with 485 Squadron. Max. level speed at full throttle height in F.S. supercharger gear, 405 m.p.h. (at 25,400 ft.) BS310 was powered by a Merlin 70 engine. JL165 @ 18lb - 20,000ft 397mph 3% of 404mph is 12mph (392mph to 416mph)
  17. These results compare favorably with those of other Spitfire LF Mk. IX aircraft, which fact is attributed chiefly to the higher full throttle height obtained with the S.U. pump. The air intake was of a new type, designed to combine the temperate and tropical versions. The SU made no appreciable difference in performance.

  19. In the ETO American fighters flew 57,875 combat hours in 1943 and lost 178 a/c, to all causes. In the ETO American fighters flew 1,129,752 combat hours in 1944 and lost 3,763 a/c, to all causes. In 1943, A2A losses accounted for 91% of the losses. In 1944, A2A losses accounted for 34% of the losses. The number of combat hours flown increased 20 fold from 1943 to 1944. It is easy to see why A2A losses increased in 1944. http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a542518.pdf The graphs in a previous post come from, http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/AAF-Luftwaffe/AAF-Luftwaffe-Fwd.html as does this one
  20. Old wives tail that won't die. There was about 1500 fatal crashes some of which could be because the pilot or a/c had been hurt/damaged in combat. These are just the Continental US fatal accidents: P-39 - 369 P-40 - 324 P-47 - 404 P-51 - 131

  22. Capt. Eric Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, RN, Chief Naval Test Pilot and C.O. Captured Enemy Aircraft Flight, remembered how they were impressed when they tested the Veltro. “One of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi MC. 205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of Italian styling and German engineering. I believe it was powered by a Daimler Benz DB 605. It was really a delight to fly, and up to anything on the Allied programme. But again, it came just before the Italians capitulated so it was never used extensively. And we did tests on it and were most impressed. The cockpit was smallish but not as bad as the Bf 109.”[
  23. JG2 and JG26 were stationed in the West for the whole war. After D-day, units were pulled from the East to help defend the Reich.
  24. I think you guys should read Bodenplatte by Manrho and Putz. There was lots of low altitude fights between Lw fighters and P47s/P51s. Two that come to mind are a flight of P-51s that were sitting on the runway with full tanks when the Lw attacked. They took off into the attacking Lw fighters and were quite successful. The other was a P-47 that chased a 109 around the slag heaps and shot it down.
