  1. Table 128 - COMBAT SORTIES FLOWN BY FIGHTERS IN THEATERS VS GERMANY, BY THEATER AND BY TYPE OF SORTIE: JAN 1943 TO MAY 194 Aug '44 vs Germany total - 45,827 escort - 23,793 b&s - 4,524 other - 17,510 A much better reference source than the graphic posted. http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a542518.pdf
  2. Over hyped and under performing.
  3. That is obvious to anyone who has walked on short wet grass and in long wet grass.
  4. If the NACA report is useless then why post the link?
  5. There is a track of the FW190 entering left and right, power on and power off spins included at the beginning of the thread. He didn't say they wouldn't spin.
  6. Most people can man up and admit when they are wrong. Then there are people who do the wiggling worm dance to get out of admitting they are wrong.
  7. Spitfire documentary 1976
  8. 616 moved to Gilze-Rijen in March and then in April, to Nijmegen. The Meteors flew armed recon and ground attack operations without encountering any German jet fighters. At this time in the war even some Allied piston pilots flew their tour without seeing a single German a/c.
  9. The thing is 616 was a true operational unit while EKdo was not.

  12. From the P-47D-27-RE production lots onward (that would include the D-30s), a dorsal fin was fitted just ahead of the rudder. The fin fillet was retro fitted to earlier Ds.
  13. Flying qualities were codified by NACA in 1943 and Military procurement based on NACA's work followed in 1945. A bit late for WW2 operational a/c.
  14. Testing done by the USAAF found that the bullet pattern from a B-17 during ground testing had the following results for 12 rounds to 600yds: ball turret > dia. 15' - 8.3mils upper turret > dia. 21' - 11.7mils chin turret > dia. 23' - 12.6 mils waist(closed) dia. 26' - 14.3mils side nose > dia. 34' - 18.7mils tail turret > dia 45' - 25mils For the B-24 it was: ball turret > dia. 15' - 8.3mils upper turret > dia. 20' - 11.2mils nose turret > dia. 23' - 12.9mils (Emerson) nose turret > dia. 35' - 19.3mils (Motor Prod.) waist(closed) dia. 23' - 12.9mils waist(open) dia. 63' - 35.6mils tail turret > dia 35' - 19.3mils taken from: "Gunner" ISBN 1-55046-332-2
  15. There is 2 Spitfires in that picture.
  16. otto you are already psyched out by the mighty Spitfire. ;)
  17. 8th AF Mustangs were limited to 72"Hg not 75"Hg.
  18. Just found out the comparison test between the EZ42 and a GGS gun sights that the gun sight came from a P-47 in Sept 1944. Will the P-47 be getting a K-14 gun sight?
  19. About 1/2 way thru Vol 3, page 562
  20. JG 7 The World's First Jet Fighter Unit 1944/1945 by Bohme. Apparently the new gunsight was tested with the Me 262 by III./JG 7 in late February and early March 1945 after which Major Rudolf Sinner, the Gruppenkommandeur, decided against equipping the aircraft of the unit with the device. Evidently the high speed of the jet fighter allowed very little time to adjust the range controls for the gunsight to compute the necessary deflection. The book mentions that very likely the only victories claimed by a Me 262 equipped with the EZ 42 occurred when Unteroffizier Heiner Geisthövel of 2./JG 7 claimed two P-51 fighters on 8 April 1945. In the book series Me262 by Smith/Creek, it is mentioned that the EZ42 was locked so it functioned as a regular gunsight.
  21. Calais was well behind the front lines and isolated. Antwerp was liberated Sept 4.
  22. There was only 100 P-47Ms built and they spent most of the time more or less grounded until April 1945. Now a P-47N, which first flew in June 1944, were coming off the assembly lines in Dec 1944. Yes I know it wasn't in Europe.
  23. Some of us are able to man up and say 'Oops, my mistake'.:music_whistling: It would be nice to see a graphic (photo or sketch) showing where this thermal relief valve is installed.
  24. According to Wiki, MW50 was fitted to recon 109s and from another source 130 were built in Nov 1944. JGs that used the K-4 Unit - date introduced to unit (1944) - number of K-4s + other 109s at month end - (end of Dec) III./JG1 - Nil 1944 II./JG2 - Nov - 2 + 56 - (9 + 20) III./JG3 - Nov - 9 + 58 - (8 + 16) I./JG4 - (Dec - 2 + 26) III./JG4 - Oct - 15 + 38 - (26 + 2) II./JG11 - (Dec - 11 + 580 III./JG26 - Nov - 35 + 36 - (29 + 15) I./JG27 - Oct - 57 + 1 - (14 + 1) II./JG27 - Oct - 2 + 57 - (0 + 21) III./JG27 - Oct - 55 + 2 - (26 + 0) IV./JG27 - Oct - 4 + 58 - (0 + 32) III./JG51 - Nil 1944 II./JG52 - Nil 1944 III./JG52 - Nil 1944 II./JG53 - (Dec - 5 + 37) III./JG53 - Nil 1944 I./JG77 - (Dec - 1 + 37) II./JG77 - Nil 1944 III./JG77 - Oct - 57 - (27) JG list from Prien/Rodeike book Bf109F, G & K and numbers from http://www.ww2.dk/ As can be seen the number decreased from 190 in Oct to 145 in Dec, despite some 854 being produced. Attrition seems to be the reason. example: III./JG77 had 86 K-4s delivered to it but lost 53 due to operational and non-operational causes.
