  1. I just tested this an confirmed. If you disable external views, then switching to controlling, say, a friendly tank, and then switching back to the F10 map does NOT make enemy aircraft that have entered a radar's max range appear. .... buuuuuuut that really wasn't the point of this bug report. The bug report is that switching views causes unwanted behavior. Turning off those views is not equal to fixing the bug. While I agree that using an external view to look at enemy troops is unrealistic anyway, the bug is present when you F7 view your own troops or F2 view your own aircraft. TBH, while I realize a real commander doesn't get to see cameras of the action whenever s/he wants, it really does detract from the game. When I send F-15s to intercept enemy aircraft, I want to watch the bandits eat the missiles in full 3D, not watch a circle icon fly towards a gumdrop icon and watch the gumdrop icon vanish.
  2. Yep, I agree a sensor shouldn't automatically detect at max range. Which is why you shouldn't be able to F2 view an enemy before it's detected. Actually, since it makes the enemy appear on the map when I F7 my OWN troops, or F2 view my OWN aircraft and switch back, it should be considered a bug either way that ED intended detection to work.
  3. This is a problem with all AI right now. I put a flight of enemy SU-24M's on a SEAD run, and they fire their HARM missiles just fine, but when it comes time to clean up, they do this orbit/running-in dance for 5 to 10 minutes before finally firing their cannon at anything.
  4. Your post made me to go back and verify my results. It looks like there's a bit of a refinement to put in here. They do appear on the command map eventually if you don't switch to another view and back, but you can make them appear immediately if you do. I'm attaching a mission file that should allow you to reproduce this bug very reliably. All you have to do is launch it and fast forward (ctrl-z) to the time 12:01:47. You will not see the Su-24 on the map, but if you press F2 then F10, it appears. (You can't see it with the F2 view or on the map before 12:01:47 because it hasn't entered the radar range yet and Fog of War is on). OR, if you wait all the way until between 12:04:30 and 12:06:30 (it's different every time for some reason but usually within that window) it appears on the map without having to switch. Those 3 minutes make a big difference! Enemy Fails to Show up on Map.miz
  5. In DCS version 1.5.3, with the map options set to force Fog of War, enemy units do not appear on the map when detected until you change views to something else (like F7) and then back to the map (F10). How to reproduce this bug: Create a new mission and in the mission options, under F10 VIEW OPTIONS, force Fog of War. Add a TACTICAL CMDR for Blue Force under Battlefield Commanders. For Blue Force, add an early warning radar somewhere on the map. For Red Force, add a non-stealthy aircraft just outside the range of the radar, and set its waypoints such that it flies towards the radar. Run the mission, stay in the F10 map view and wait a few minutes. Observe that the enemy aircraft do not show up on the F10 map even when it should be in range of the radar by now. Rapidly switch to a ground unit view (F7) and then back to the map view (F10). Observe that the enemy aircraft suddenly appears.
  6. I would really, REALLY love to see the APKWS (basically a laser guided Hydra rocket) in DCS. I would carry these all the time in the A-10C!
  7. Thanks for the info! Yeah, I think I saw that video, too. The Apache ran out of chaingun ammunition so they stayed in the fight with hellfires. I couldn't find any mention of a "maverick" or "AGM-65" on the Wikipedia page for the AH-64.
  8. Don'tcha think a CBU-97 would be a bit overkill against a lone soft target, like a single truck? I've always wondered if the cost of the weapon being employed would be a factor in deciding whether it should be deployed if there's a cheaper, equally effective alternative. For example, a 2-second burst from a GAU-8 costs around $4,000 in ammunition alone, but a CBU-97 costs around $360,000. This is all other things being equal, like the cost of logistics to transport and store the munitions, all the crew costs, the pilot, the maintenance of the plane, the fuel, etc. This may sound odd, but it feels good to me when I blow up a $2,000,000 tank with a $129,000 maverick.
  9. The retired A-10 pilot we talked to on Teamspeak a few weeks ago told us that he wasn't impressed with laser guided bombs' ability to hit moving targets. He had been retired for a few years, though (I think 4?). I don't know if their accuracy has improved since then but probably not. In the game, though, they're dead accurate. You can even change targets in the last few seconds if they're close enough together and get perfect hits. JDAMs, at least in DCS, have a higher CEP (meaning they're less precise). I don't even use them against stationary tanks -- only stationary soft targets and buildings.
  10. IIRC, you should only jam to break a lock on your aircraft. This includes both before and after a missile has been launched, since it has to continue to track you to hit you. Your jammer automatically shuts off anyway after a few seconds if you aren't being actively locked. That said, some missiles, like the AIM-120 AMRAAM, switch to home-on-jam automatically. I'm not sure whether you're supposed to jam or not in this situation, but suffice to say the A-10 is in huge trouble in the Air-Air arena. I'd probably dive to 100 AGL to force a look-down situation and chaff like hell. Anyone got some advice?
  11. I have 20 curvature set.
  12. I bind my TrackIR Z-axis to zoom to simulate the use of binoculars. Not sure if that's considered cheesy or cheating, but there are many ways to give yourself a cheesy advantage: Use of labels Use of wingman AI Use of model enlargement Use of F10 map showing enemy locations It robs you of a big part of the sim to use those, since finding targets is half the battle or more. I guess the "legitimate" ways of finding targets is through JTAC, MK-1 Eyeball, or TGP. You really ought to have a good idea of where the target is hiding before you pull out the TGP, though, or you'll be looking for a looooong time. There's also triangulation with the RWR if you're up against a radar-using AAA or SAM. And lastly, my favorite, is flying low enough to bait AAA and SAM fire while a teammate watches for tracers and smoke. Doesn't work for artillery, though. Requirements: A deathwish A titanium bathtub A clean second pair of pants
  13. You get that message when using JDAMs (GBU-38 and GBU-31)
  14. Side note - I found it interesting to see how far the pilot moves the flight stick to get changes in the aircraft's attitude. That must make fine adjustments much easier compared to my cheapie joystick.
  15. Yes - you will need to retrim as you take fuel: one click of nose-up trim at one point.
  16. So I take it the repair game files method didn't work? Just curious :)
  17. Yes -- this exact thing happened to me in 2.0 alpha. Running a repair fixed the problem for me. See this thread for instructions: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114030
  18. AI wingmen are bugged pretty badly, so that's not your fault. I have found that extensive surgery in the mission editor can correct this, but it's a lot of work. It involves deleting and recreating each enemy unit group and then rebuilding the triggers. Almost not worth it. Hard maneuvering can and will throw off your TGP. Sometimes it's due to gimbal lock (it will say so on your MFCD) but other times it just gets lost. You can counter this by making a markpoint (TMS right short), switching to that markpoint, then slaving sensors to steerpoint (china hat aft long). If your TGP gets lost, you simply boresight it (china hat aft short) and re-slave it (china hat aft long). I do this so much it's almost muscle memory now: TMS right short Coolie up short DMS up China hat aft long Coolie right long Attack!
  19. I totally agree with this. It's hard to "drive formation" in any racing/driving sim/game but incredibly easy IRL. Depth perception makes a big difference. It's hard to describe, but IRL it's as if you can sense that you're getting closer or falling behind before there's any real significant visual change in the apparent size of the car in front of you. It's like more of a feeling than an obvious visual cue.
  20. That's not surprising! I, too, find the A-10C to be much easier to land compared to the Su-25T. My guess is that it has to do with the SAS. The A-10C just flies more smoothly and seems to dampen oscillations. Not to mention it has a TVV, which is just more intuitive to me than a simple vertical velocity indicator.
  21. Find me on Steam (username Xavven). We can fly this weekend if you're on. I'm in the US MST, -0700 UTC
  22. Keep an eye on your TVV (total velocity vector). In your video, as you were approaching the tanker, your TVV was above the horizon line, meaning you were gaining altitude. Keep your TVV on the horizon line. You might want to slow your approach a bit when you get close. I like to hold a position about 20 ft from the boom and fly formation for a few seconds just to make sure I'm in control, then I use jubus' method to approach slowly. Each nudge of the throttle up is like taking a step forward, and each nudge of the throttle back is like taking a step back. Also keep in mind that when you increase throttle, even for 1 second as jubus was explaining, you will tend to gain altitude, and vice versa. Counter this by nudging the stick forward for a half second when you increase throttle, and vice versa.
  23. Agreed here. The Georgian Hammer campaign is quite underwhelming. I would love a candidacy training campaign. I haven't tried operation red flag yet since somehow it didn't get added to my campaign folder despite pre-ordering in time. Hopefully the quality is there.
  24. I don't mind that this happens even if it's considered a bug by computer simulation standards. I think I remember reading in A10's Over Kosovo that the AGM-65D sometimes gets confused and locks on to hot spots on the ground other than the intended target, just like any other missile can get trashed with flares or chaff. Actually, sometimes I wonder if the AGM-65D in DCS is too good since it doesn't seem to lose tracking when the target vehicle passes behind foliage, like trees for example.
  25. This is a very long standing issue. Are you playing instant action, or campaign, any particular mission, or a custom mission? The instant action missions are particularly bugged. They can be fixed in the mission editor, though.
