  1. This is my new favorite post on this website, anyway here's a laundry list of military aircrew saying far worse than light profanities both in and out of combat off the top of my head: Second Gulf of Sidra incident, I think everyone here has heard Beads yelling about not having a fcking tone at LEAST once now F-4E supersonic guns kill on a MiG-19, if you want something more period correct F-4 ejection over the north sea RF-4C shot down by SAM, friendly warning this one's a fair bit more intense than the others F-4 after shooting down a MiG-21 F-105 wild weasels in the thick of it, gotta love the that sht hot call TURN THE HEAT OFF, yeah... IFF DB-3, saved the best for last, kills me every time
  2. I've been doing a bit of testing against AI, and I think I've found a fairly reliable way of slapping them in the face with sparrows. When you enter pilot cage mode, Jester seems to move the radar cursor up the scope, almost like he sees the contact beyond the 5 miles the radar displays. If you're not on the deck and use Jester context long to attempt a lock, Jester won't respond until the target gets within the 5 mile scope, only then will he lock them, which gives you enough time lob a sparrow or two at them, even with the 4 second wait time of the AIM-7E. On the deck/in serious clutter things get a bit different, and using the above method usually results in Jester getting a botched lock. Instead I found that if you wait for the target to get within 5 miles, Jester will track them with the cursor even through clutter. If you wait for the target to pop out of the clutter, then lock them yourself using the placeholder WSO first/second trigger binds from the front seat you usually have just enough time to lob an E-2 at them. I haven't had time to test this much in a normal mission environment, so I'd be interested in hearing how well it works for others. Also, I have mixed feelings about this method. It feels kinda gamey to rely on what seems like an uncanny ability of Jester to spot and track contacts beyond the scope and through clutter, but I'm just a humble stick monkey; I'll leave that up to you radar whisperers out there to debate.
  3. I'm not sure how many of us in the sim community branch into other video games but I can honestly say with confidence that 2.1 has some of the most realistic looking graphics out there, massive props to ED for their hard work! :D
  4. Interesting! I'm a huge history buff and I love to learn about the smaller details like this so I appreciate all the replies :smartass:
  5. I've been looking for resources on P-51 markings, specifically during D-Day, even more specifically about invasion stripes. Personally I love the look of the black and white stripes both on the bottom and top of the wing, take Crazy Horse (one of my favorites) for example The same can be seen on other Stangs like Quicksilver, but I never see them in actual historical pictures, more commonly I see the black and white stripes on the bottom of the wing and a single black stripe on the top, as shown here Are the stripes that we see on Crazy Horse and Quicksilver and others historically accurate? Part of me is hoping they are because God damn if they don't look nice on the pony :P To take the topic further, how many restored mustangs keep their original colors (or at least mimic other historical schemes) and how many are simply redone with the modern eye? Miss Kandy has to be my altime favorite P-51 scheme but again I don't know if it's actually historically accurate, any thoughts? :smartass:

  8. So I'm hoping to work for my pilots license in the near future, however living in the bay area means that isn't going to come cheap so every dollar counts. What kind of stuff would come with the best price? I love the simplicity of the Piper cub and I wouldn't mind having a taildragger. How is the price of a Cessna or something more like that compared to a cub? Alternatively I'd love to have a biplane but I feel like something more on the vintage side would cost a bit more. I'm asking on here because when I searched online I didn't get very solid prices, everything seemed to fluctuate a bit so I thought I'd be better off asking people who have real experience :P
  9. I'm absolutely loving the new canopy lighting effect, and I really like how the paint is more scrappy and chipped, makes it feel more authentic like a real rushed wartime aircraft :D
  10. Quick question, will we be getting IFF interrogate? Or will we be relying on that handy dandy camera in the nose ;) Also how far can the camera effectively see?
  11. I think it's really funny that a bit after I post this leatherneck shows us the viggen which has exactly the same effect you and I are looking for :P
  12. Wow! Some great discussion going on :P I really wish that the game offered more fitting missions for the 190 instead of dogfight scenarios, some BnZ training would be really cool ;)
  13. Well I hope they change it soon considering the agressor campaign is kind of based around BFM, is there any way to change it in maybe the LUA files?
  14. It seems like every time I try and set up a quick dogfight mission with an AI, any AI, they always end up running away in a slow turn. It even happens with the F-14 in the default quick start dogfight mission on the NTTR map. AI skill doesn't change the behavior, and because of the F-5's little engines it can never seem to catch up with the enemy. I haven't had this problem with any other module and it's pretty frustrating, guns kills are a rarity and are really hard to pull off because of their inaccuracy alone, a lot of the time when you get a good angle on the AI they're already out of range. The only way I've been able to counter this is to do a wide turn into their turn and just wing it on a head-on, but this is a slow and boring process and it feels like it shouldn't be the case, at least not on low level AI. :helpsmilie:
  15. That's a really good point, I imagine it would be much more effective in groups, especially against bombers and their escorts like you said.
  16. I really doubt that, the 190A in IL-2 and 190D we have both turn like absolute bricks. The 109 can be fairly agile really, just never agile enough to outturn some of its opposition, plus using it to BnZ is to use its real power most effectively.
  17. Thanks!!
  18. Does anyone have a link to leatherneck's stream page? Couldn't find it on twitch and I want to be prepared :P
  19. Whenever you hear about WWII from allied and axis pilots alike they all agree that the FW-190 was the terror of the skies. Spitfire pilots were confident against 109s but learned to fear the 190, and historically it's generally agreed upon that the 190 was superior to the 109. However that doesn't seem to be the case in sims (at least in my view. take DCS for example, the 190 feels outperformed by the mustang and the 109. I know it's supposed to be used as to BnZ but it feels like the 109 just does that better, not just in DCS but in Battle of Stalingrad too. The 109 has no trouble at all picking up speed in a dive, and can retain it much better while extending/climbing. Is it armament? I know the 190 packs a good punch but 109's wasn't terrible. Is it something about flying it IRL that we simmers just don't have the ability to comprehend, like the feel of the aircraft or the ergonomics? I want to be able to use this bird to it's maximum but whenever I take it out of the hanger in IL-2 or DCS most times it feels like the 109 could do an on par, if not better job.
  20. Sorry I probably wasn't very clear with what I meant by enhancement, I'm talking purely aesthetics with the "font" I guess you could call it, not functionality 8)
  21. Looking at HUD footage (particularly this clip) I noticed that the HUD has a sort of bloom effect. The closest thing I can relate it to is the gunsight effects used in Battle of Stalingrad/Moscow. Is there any way to edit the HUD to resemble this? I don't expect a miracle but I feel like it would add a much greater level of immersion even if it is a smaller change ;) [EDIT] Could it also be possible to change the contrast too? The real life HUD seems to be more intense than what we have.
  22. (this has probably been talked about before but i don't feel like digging through pages and pages of old forum posts :P) ok so most people who have done some light digging on P-51 operations will probably know that the correct way to start the engine is to leave the mags off while starting it, count 5-6 blade rotations and then switch on the mags so it can catch (something about getting the oil or fuel flowing i can't remember) but i know it's a pretty important thing to do. the problem is in DCS you can't count 5-6 blade rotations because the engine catches WITHOUT the mags on which is kind of disheartening if you want your operations to be as authentic as possible :( what does everyone else think of this? i have a general idea of how engines from that time worked but i could very well be wrong so keep that in mind
  23. i love me some good WWII action and cannot wait for normandy so we can finally get some dedicated scenarios going (it gets tiring flying around modern day russia/georgia and pretending it's 1940s germany or france :P) but flying against AI doesn't even come close to flying against real people who DON'T have super cyborg spotting abilities, my only problem is that 95% of the time i check the WWII servers they're totally dead :( even today i joined one that had nearly 30 people on and within 20 minutes every single person had left, what's the deal?? i'm guessing the WWII scene is more popular in europe so timezones are a problem, but whatever the case when would you guys say the best time to fly is?
  24. very interesting, thank you for sharing! i guess it really is just a mixed bag, huh? :P
  25. most pictures of the mig-21 that i've seen use the lighter greenish blue paint while only a few have the more solid blue paint, but that paint scheme is much brighter than the one in the sim i haven't seen the darker blue paint that we get by default, does it just depend on the country using it? or maybe the manufacturer or time period (or model seeing as some of these might not be BIS models)? my question is which one would be the "standard" color for the bis cockpit
