Neverending contest (military aviation knowledge)
ThunderChief replied to Kusch's topic in Military and Aviation
Maybe we could at least find out what part of the aircraft we see. I start the speculation by saying its a remote controlled gun. -
Neverending contest (military aviation knowledge)

so this thread is finally dead now?:music_whistling: -
Now all we need is a vid of the KA-50 doing this:
ThunderChief replied to Total's topic in Military and Aviation
Yeah you can't do that with a UH-1 rotor head. This is a Bo-105 of course. Its using a rigid rotorhead, giving much greater manouverability. A UH-1 would sheer of the rotor under low/negative G conditons very fast. -
Honestly, is that a photo of a real A-10 or a screenshot of DCS?

Engine out emergency autorotation landing
ThunderChief replied to geogob's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
When I tried autorotation (with engines off) i only got it right with high forward speed, (60 kph at least). If I tried a conventional flare I would crash, tail first impact. I guess its to much armor for a lowspeed autorotate landing, it is simply to heavy... -
Would anyone be interested in these tooltips?
ThunderChief replied to miguez's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I think this is realy useful. It helps alot to learn the keyboard shortcuts. Would be cool if you would share this. -
Easier ways to remember start-up procedure?
ThunderChief replied to Wags94's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
This checklist might be good (didn't try yet) but my plan was to have a checklist with keycommands to be faster than clicking the virtual switches. I will make tradeoffs here because as far as I know there is know indication when the INU is aligned, and it will work correctly even if you start before that. The gearbox temperature seems to be okay as long as its not to cold outside. What I realy meant by being realistic is to avoid simply switching everything on at once. But till now I didn't find anything problematic if doing so anyway. -
Easier ways to remember start-up procedure?
ThunderChief replied to Wags94's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I am currently working out a startup checklist with all key commands aiming on being faster than the automated startup procedure (mainly by starting engines / abris faster) but I try to keep it realistic. -
Not exactly the same problem, but after getting a new helicopter (FARP repair) I couldn't rearm / refuel. It seemed as I couldn't contact maintenance for some reason. It only worked after taking off and landing again. Would be nice if anyone could try this and maybe confirm it. It happend in the convoy hunting mission.

You can hear EKRAN messages with bat / ground power only. But you have to switch on EKRAN, then simply try the voice test button on the rear panel. BTW You won't here EKRAN warning if engines are running and the door is open.

Heat seeking missiles for the Ka-50
ThunderChief replied to topol-m's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Using the B1 for A2A would have big advantages as you could the load the F22 with bombs as you wouls lack bombers then :P -
Think it says "check" ?!

I just wanted to say that it is amazing how much fun flying the KA-50 online is. Using PVI-800 and ABRIS seems even more important in multiplayer to adapt to diffrent stages of the battle.
-
I just tested it by shuting of all systems (bat and gen off) and after power up, the PVI-800 shows a self position 1000s kilometers away from where I was but navigation (route mode) still worked as usual. Seems as inacuracy is not implemented yet.
-
I seems to me that this inacuracy of the INU is not modelled. 1. Even after long fligths without INU fix PVI and ABRIS show exactly the same position 2. When rotor RPM drops to much, INU will do a realignment and I would expect it to lose position information, but it still shows same position as ABRIS Did anyone ever expirienced a inacuracy of the INU / PVI 800? I will try to investigate on this with ABRIS disabled and see if INU will lose acuracy then. I think I read somewhere on ABRIS system page that it performs INU update every 3 minutes but I always thought it will read INU data and not write !?

Heat seeking missiles for the Ka-50
ThunderChief replied to topol-m's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I got the impression that there won't be an A2A missile for the KA-50 in DCS. And the HMS is completly diffrent to the LockOn / Mig-29 HMS. I don't realy know why I would need an A2A missle tbh, as it would block the ATGM (like when you carry the Kh-25). I think A2A is realy difficult / anoying anyway, as the field of view of the KA-50s cockpit is to limited to track fast moving aircraft. -
I think you need (a bit) more collective to have more control on the roll axis. You might try to disable the roll axis autopilot. I had the impression that it would be a faster roll then, but I can't say for sure.

You all left out the most important question: Why does the heading change (the turning start) when you bank the helicopter (or plane)? I mean you could expect it simply starts moving sideward right? But obvisouly banking will induce some "forces" causing a turn. And here we are: Those "forces" are not exactly what you need. They are too weak. You need to add some yaw to keep the turn coordinated. Its easy to explain why: When you are flying a coordinated turn, those "forces" will be zero, they only exist when you turn is not coordinated. This is because in a not coordinated turn, the airstream (?) will NOT "hit" your helicopter / plane directly from the side, and this actually causes the turn. But you don't want this to happen, and thats why you use your rudder. BUT On airplanes sideslip will reduce the lift of the wings, and can cause a stall even if you are well above the stall speed. This of course won't happen to a helicopter. So you can very well fly an uncoordinated turn if you like it. I like coordinated turns. In fact I like to use even much more rudder than needed, because you will point the nose faster into the new direction, and thus you have SA faster.

Flight Director Mode, why it is not used in real?
ThunderChief replied to 815TooCooL's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
When I started flying the Ka-50 the autopilot was very disturbing for me, especially because you can't change heading without retrimming. But after a while I realized that the autopilot is the only way to fight effectivly (in most situations). For example when attacking a convoy from behind you can simply set pitch to +4° and you will close in very slowly AND you don't have to care about flying till you finished your attack. Your not to fast so you can kill all vehicles in one approach, but you're not a sitting duck like in a hover, which means you can descend and manouver much faster in case you need too. When flying with FD I will have to check fligth parameters ever 2-3 seconds and correct it, which means I have to take my eyes away from target. Also you can't use "automatic turn to target" which can make live even more easier. But when flying just for fun or fast egress, I will still switch to FD :) -
Before you could implement something like this you would have to decide if you want to make a game or a simulation. If things would be done in DCS style, you would need 3 or 4 players in each tank, and a single hit by atgm or enemy tank would kill you. this would be too frustrating I guess and some kind of balancing would be needed to make it enjoyable.

Yesterday I flew in mountain area and was flying @~4000m and playing around with the shkval and didn't monitor the engine gauges. But suddendly I lost both engines how can that be? I managed to get one engine startet right before I would have impacted the ground, so the engines were still working, must have been some kind of overload ... ?

Anyone have a correct shutdown checklist ?
ThunderChief replied to the_soupdragon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I read somewhere that on some engines you have to run them for a while at idle load to let them cool down. -
Cyclic and Collective sticks, what does the buttons do?
ThunderChief replied to Yellonet's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Uhhm the only jetengine I ever started had the FADEC engaded all the time (it was a JetCat only, but still a real jet engine). I think what makes the FADEC special is that it can control the engine in situation: Full Authority ;) But of course I could be wrong ... And I agree that its very unlikely that you can start a non-FADEC engine with the govenor engaded, because those mostly analogous systems have a very limited operating bandwidth. -
I plan to modify a X-52 throttle. I will extend the throttle lever and add a counter weigth so it won't move if you let it go. I think that is better than increasing the friction as it will cause to much wear.

Safety problem with counter rotating blades ?
ThunderChief replied to golfsierra2's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
What you have to consider is that the retreating blade will stall when its at 3 or 9 o'clock so there is no lift at this position. Vice versa on opposite there will be maximum lift. The upward or downward force will start to move the blade at this position BUT the resulting flapping will reach its maximum up to 90° later, at 6 or 12 o'clock this is becaus force will cause motion, and motion will then change position. That causes a phase shift of up to 90° (for 2 blade rotors with hubs that allow full flapping like on Bell 206). Other rotor hubs are more riggid and thus the phase shift will be lower.
