U-95 + U-22 Pods and jammers in general in game and IRL
mattebubben replied to Ice_Cougar's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Interesting. And if Carrying the KA pod (does the U22 also have this ability) gives you the ability to detect missile launches that will make it a much more attractive option since the increased Survivability of the Launch warning / Jamming especially together with the Countermeasure pod will actually be worth giving up the 2 weapons in some circumstances. (And im very much hoping they are adding this ability to the module) And Carrying 2x RB 75 (either Normal or T) together with the Countermeasures / Jammer could make it a decent aircraft to pick off Sam units with (Rb 05 or BK 90 could also be used but the RB 75 is simply much more flexible) atleast if there are no dedicated Sead aircraft available, and its probably better suited to the job then the A-10 is ^^. -
They have stated that they had considered a MLD but were unable to find all the information needed for the MLD so are currently planning for a MLA (as they had access to all information needed for the MLA) But since its so early in development if they got all the info needed for the MLD it could still be an option. Personally i dont care much either way =P on the one side the MLD is a bit more capable but the MLA is also more common with many more users so it would fit in more different ingame scenarios etc (and i usually prefer a more common variant) and the difference between the two is not that massive. I might actually be slightly more interested in the MLA (though either variant will be a day one purchase) the only Mig-23 variants that could get me more excited then a MLA/MLD would be a Mig-23BN or a Mig-27 ^^.

Yea same here. One very much have come in more or less perfectly vertically relative to the refueling probe since even minor vertical corrections are very likely to end up in a Oscillation and at that point its best to simply drop back a little and try again.

Yes they are Recce pods they are named MSK Vänster (Vänster = Left) and MSK Höger (Höger = Right) they are used for Night Recce. MSK Vänster (left Pod) has 3 Cameras with 76mm optic + a Flash Unit, The cameras are mounted to cover a 120 degree area. The Flash unit on the Left pod only lights up the 60 degrees to the left inside the area covered by the cameras but the second pod (MSK Höger) contains only a flash unit in order to cover the 60 degrees to the right so together they cover the entire 120 degree area covered by the Cameras. The Cameras/Flash Units work in the shortwave IR range that is immediately outside the visible spectrum so the flash from the flash units is not visible to the human eye. This System was used for Photography from a low altitude. the SH-37 also carried camera pods of different types including those just mentioned as it lacked the nose camera set as it was equipped with a radar instead. Here are Examples of a SH 37 with Camera Pods. The SH 37 could carry the same MSK Vänster / MSK Höger pods as the SF 37 but also had a dedicated camera pod fixed to the right side of the body named KaK with a 600 mm focal length that was designed for long range photography against targets such as Ships and harbors the. That Camera had to be removed in order to Carry the Night Recce pods. On the Second Picture it looks like its mounted with both the KAK Camera as well as the MSK Vänster Pod but im not sure if that was an operational loadout (since only have of the area covered by the Cameras in the MSK Pod would be correctly lit without the other MSK Pod) or if its simply that they mounted it for Display purposes. On a side note. These two pictures surprised me at first as i did not know that F 15 had operated the SH 37 but it seems that during the 90s when the second division was reformed and brought up to full combat strenght it included both attack and Recce aircraft (from other Wings had had been retired) and not with just AJ/AJS aircraft as i had assumed earlier but looking into Viggen Serial number lists confirms that F 15 did indeed fly some SH 37 and SF 37s And if that list is correct then the aircraft on these two picture (15-81) crashed in an accident a few months after these pictures were taken. (The second picture was taken at RIAT on 21 July 1996 and it crashed in October 16 1996 with the pilot dying in the accident)

First Generation Jets are the Subsonic jet fighters so From the ww2 aircraft to aircraft like the F-86,Mig-15,Mig-17 and Hawker hunter etc. The Second Gen are the first generation of Supersonic jet fighters and that includes both Mach 1 and mach 2 capable aircraft (So the Mig-19 and F-100 are both Second Gen as are the Mirage-IIIC and early Mig-21s) It depends ofc on what of the different Generation rule sets one followes but in none of them is the Mig-19 designated as a First Gen Jet Fighter. Sure but i never said the Mig-19 was the Ideal opponent... Only that of the aircraft we currently have or that are in production the Mig-19P is the most historically accurate Opponent to the mirage IIICJ and they are also more comparable in some areas such as a lack or RWR and flare dispensers etc. And yes the Mirage IIICJs radar was more capable but its prime duty was to find Bombers and high altitudes, In low altitude against Fighter sized targets it will be alot less effective and reliable. And where did you get that Number for the Mirage IIICJs radar the only numbers i find for the Cyrano I radar of the IIIC are around 20-24km max range or did the III CJ not use the Cyrano I radar of the basic IIIC?
-
Well the Mirage IIICJ does not have a very capable radar either (though its probably better then the Mig-19Ps) And the Mig-19 is not a first Gen Jet fighter. Its designated as a Second Gen jet as is the Mirage III. Its Simply Slower but its still Supersonic and is quick enough at low altitude. Its Also More Maneuverable then the Mirage III is so should make for a interesting opponent. And when it comes to armaments the Air combat during the Six-Day war was primarily gun fighting and the Mig-19 does have confirmed gun kills against Israeli Mirage IIICJs. Having Opponents with Speed differences is nothing new (F-5E and Migs-21Bis etc) it will just force the pilots to use their respective advantages during combat. And the Mig-19 is probably the best adversary for the Mirage IIICJ that is in game or is in development. as the Mig-21Bis and F-5E have larger advantages over the Mirage IIICJ when it comes to avionics / Weapons then the Mirage IIICJ has over the Mig-19. (And the Mig-19P and Mirage IIICJ are also of a more comparable timeframe production wise)
-
And now with the Announcement of the Mig-19P project there is a proper opponent for the Mirage III CJ as they faced eachother in both the 6 day war, the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War. On a side note does anybody know if the Mig-21Bis and Mirage IIICJ every faced eachother in combat?. Since the Mig-21Bis would not have seen service in any of those 3 wars. (Atleast not the first two and i dont think it was in service by the time of the Yom Kippur War either)
-
Well the Viggen is very close to release and here is the quote from Prowler. So The Mig-23 and Mig-19 are still very far away where as the Viggen will be available in the pretty near future.
-
Well thats how it works on the F-5E. You have to do the changes on the ground before you start moving. So thats what im hoping for the Viggen.
-
I hope you guys also implement a option similar to how the F-5E can change the laser code and Rocket Salvo etc. (Through keybinds and the Kneeboard and having to select the setup prior to engine startup etc) Since Especially for MP that would be extremely helpful since otherwise its all server side and the player has no input (so if the server has the wrong setting selected there would be nothing the player/pilot could do).
-
The Mig-23MLD was apparently able to use the R-73 but i dont think the Mig-23MLA has that ability.
-
Im well aware of this and for the 1970s and early 80s dedicated Chaff/Flare pods were the norm and i dont argue that they should have done anything different to start with. But Then they had developed the New Countermeasure system and mounted it on the JA 37 i have less understanding why they did not also mount it on the AJS 37 Upgrade that was done during the same timeframe (so it should not have been to expensive or difficult to include it as a part of the upgrade). Since where as the Dedicated Chaff and Flare pods where more then acceptable in the 70s and early 80s by the late 80s there were better alternatives available For the AJS 37 alternatives that had already been developed and were in service. On a side note the Countermeasure Pod mentioned that is used by the Tornado (Boz-100 series pods) was designed in Sweden and was based on the KB Pod that is used by the Viggen but for the Tornado it could be carried as Standard as they did not have to give up a Weapon pylon for it (Where as the AJ 37 had to give up 1 4th of its Air-Ground Ordnance to carry it and carrying both a Chaff/Flare pod and a Jammer Pod forced you to give up half). I will probably forgo the countermeasure pod most of the time in favor of more weapons and simply fly lower and faster ^^ (Like a True Viggen pilot).
-
Thanks for quick response and hopefully its able to Cycle Between the two =P. Since otherwise it might be Problematic to carry a mix of the two especially in head on engagements if you cant manually select the different types.
-
Ren on the Subject of the Weapons loadouts. If one was Carrying Both RB 74s and RB 24Js do you know if there was any way to Select which one you wanted to use first?
-
The primary defence for the Viggen especially against Sams will be low level flying. Using terrain or just flying very close to the ground to avoid missiles. And if you fly low enough you dont need countermeasures ^^. The easiest way to know you are flying at the correct altitude in the Viggen is when you feel the External Fueltank scrape the ground below you. There were Chaff and Flare Dispensers developed for the JA 37 that did not take up a Weapons Pylon (Flare Dispensers on small unused hardpoints and Chaff Dispensers mounted on the side of the RB 74 Weapons Pylon) that entered service in the late 80s and 90s. And the "hardpoints" they were mounted on apparently also existed on the AJ/AJS 37 they were just never used, I dont know why they decided to not use those systems on the AJS 37 as well but maby they thought it as not needed due to the low altitude tactics used by the Attack and Recce Viggens. When looking at the Viggen there are many times when one wonders why they did what they or why they did not do X or Y =P. The Countermeasures are one example of this but there are others as well. And its hard to know if they had a good reason to it all but we simply dont know =P, or maby it was budget related or it could be that they simply did what they felt like doing since Saab and the Swedish airforce always had a tendency to try their own thing and not be mainstream.

Inner wing Pylons for the Countermeassure / jamming pods. So the Same pylons as the Anti-Ship Missiles.

Just like Ren i dont know why it did it like this only that they did =P Could it have to do with Mission Priorities? as Anti-Ship work was more or less the most important task for the AJ 37 is there any advantage when it comes to searching for Ships or flying over Ocean to have the water Lighter and the Land/Ships Darker could that make finding ships easier then the other way around? (Or why did the US decide on Land = Light and Water = Dark for their Air-Ground Radars) Here is an example of In cockpit footage of the radar in action if interested. (It shows the Radar in action at 1:15,1:40 and 2:37)

If someone has more info i hope they correct me. But i dont think where was any kind of automatic system. The Terrain Avoidance for the Air-Ground Radar is primarily to give all weather capabilities. Since while in good weather during daytime you can usually see any obstacle in time but in bad weather or during night time flying at the speeds and altitudes that were common for the Attack Viggen it would not always be able to see an obstacle in time (as the pilot would have extremely little time to react). But the terrain avoidance mode let you see whats ahead of you in even the worst visibility conditions thus making it possible to use it at low altitude and high speeds in any weather conditions "safely". During Daytime Good weather flying it would most likely not be used as much since the pilot would be able to just look outside the cockpit but with low visibility conditions and with the pilot having to rely on the aircraft systems alone then the terrain avoidance radar would be very useful and very much needed if one intended to fly low.

Well not everybody can prioritise the game and modules infront of real life all the time. And especially younger players dont always have the money to spend on a module especially if its one they are not to sure about. If its a Module one really wants to get one is usually able to afford it (even if it means cutting back on other things) but if its a Module one is a bit interested in but it not 100% sure about one might not buy it if the money might be needed elsewhere. I personally dont have a problem buying a module if im interested in it but i have friends that need to have an aircraft they are really interested in before they are willing to spend the money. But its up for everyone to decide what they want to do with their money.
-
Its a Mig-23MLA. The MLA is a late production Mig-23ML and it had some avionics improvements though it was pretty much identical visually and performance wise. And im very happy with the Choice of a Mig-23MLA. I find it to be a happy medium especially if they were unable to get the info for a Mig-23MLD and it should be a capable enough aircraft With its R-24R/T and R-60Ms.
-
Sure having friends buy their own copy if they are interested in the aircraft in question is the best solution. But i have 2 friends who play DCS but who are not likely to buy the Viggen themselves (Due to lack of Knowledge / interest in the aircraft). So if i want to show my appreciation and buy multiple keys of the Viggen why not gift them to friends that would otherwise not get the Viggen since that way i get a wingman and am also able to get them to be more interested in the Viggen (since if they have it they are bound to try it and probably like it) instead of those keys just being Unused. There is no reason to have a key just laying around unused if there is a chance someone else who could or would not buy his own could have a use / find enjoyment from it. The more people that try and fly an aircraft the better. Since there are plenty of people that have a module they are uncertain of getting for full price but if they got it they might love it and promote it to others thus they might get others to buy it in turn. Im not interested in the A-10C enough to buy it myself (i make do with the A-10A and Su-25A untill the AJS 37 comes out) but if a friend wanted me to fly with him and gave it to me i might very well change my mind about it. So if one wants a friend to have an aircraft and he wont or cant buy it himself why not buy it for him if you can spare the money.
-
Great news. Im very much looking forward to that Mig-23. Its been one of the aircraft i have been hoping for the most. I hope they consider making more Variants once This Mig-23 is completed (a Mig-23BN or Mig-27 would be a great addition to this fighter Mig-23).

And this part Talks heavily about the Viggen and how it would have been used as well as the Airforce as a whole during the cold war period.
