Hey TXSailor! About de-icing: I ride with this configuration. Been trying it out in -20C and heavy snowfall :) And if you're paranoid like me, switch all switches twice, y'know like "activate" them and shit. (The whole thing means De-icing is AUTO as general systems go, but it's ON for both engines whilst just auto for windshield and system itself...or something)

Easy Communications seem dead
SFC Tako replied to SFC Tako's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
In the Mi-8 overhead console you can choose about five different radiosystems and also, the default radioband is now set to FM. There's also a switch for that on the overhead console. From having the big radio switch to УКР (means UKR in latin letters) I believe you get the R-863 working but remember to flick from spu to rad (СПУ-РАД) and flick the AM/FM switch to AM...pheeew...THEN I believe I've been able to talk to ATCs...but no ground troops ;) Or did I do all this with the 828? Hell I don't rememeber. I JUST WANT EASY COMMS! C'mon, dumb it down for us - let Boris the technician do all the the comms! Let ME fly! :joystick: -
Hey, press - guess what I did when I couldn't get the ground crew's attention? (GroundCrew black listed, my systems were all down). I ROLLED BACK THE DRIVER WINDOW! It's insane but that did the trick! (It was in the Mi-8 )

Easy Communications seem dead
SFC Tako replied to SFC Tako's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
That was good info, I assigned the triggers for two separate buttons and tried it out. I still don't get the F7 option for ground troops when I'm using the radio at the correct frequency but now as I'm trying out all different sorts of combos, I noticed that when I have easy comms ON I can't just talk to any ATC tower just like that, but I DO get in contact with them using my newly assigned radio button having entered their respective frequencies (and when using easy comms I get all frequensies listed). But still, the ground troop F7 eludes me. Also, I have to dial in to VHF AM to use the radio button correctly - otherwise when I press it it just says INTERCOM from the start (which is logic...or not, I'm doing this with easy comms on) Intercom button always says INTERCOM though. Just a thought: Am I in some kind of limbo between easy comms and hard comms? As I'm quite disoriented by now I can't remember properly but did one have to enter the frequencies manually for different ATCs when using easy comms before? I have to do that now anyways. AND BIG THANKS FOR THE ATTENTION! -
Few new things I've noticed with the Huey since 1.2.12
SFC Tako replied to kontiuka's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Same thing regarding communications with a unit to embark, F7 "Descent"-menu not available for me at least. -
Anyone, how do you get troops to disembark? I used to be able to talk to them via communications menu and then "Descent"...but no more. Is there any other hidden command? Cause they just won't disembark on their own even though you've landed at their drop-off point. Basically, I can't talk to them anymore and they can't disembark themselves. Great.

Tried turning off easy comms, shutdown game, turn it on again...no good. Tried manually using the radio - it said INTERCOM!!! Switched to actually using the radio (yes, I can see that I'm using the r-828 )...no good. Tried switching to AM...no good. Set the frequency manually for the correct tower...no good. Tried out a different mission for my Huey where I KNOW the easy comms have been working...same crap there as well :) Dear oh dear...maybe I must learn the proper radio routines as well. Personally I think radio comms on full simulator mode is crazy donkey shit. They can make a specific simulator for that instead, then all radioheads can sit around fiddling with the squelch as much as they like. Me, I want Boris the technician to handle all comms for me. But anyways, easy comms is screwed up for both Huey and Mi-8 now  -

SFC Tako replied to SFC Tako's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Gonna check on that. The main thing bothering me is just how the rug can be pulled from under you like this. -
Until yesterday evening I could do pretty much everything with the radio via easy communications enabled coupled with the communications button. Talk to ATC, order troops to embark, talk to groundcrew etc...but then tonight it just won't work  So I've gone through some older posts and yes, I could see that my FM/AM-switch was set to FM but changing that over to AM doesn't help and setting the correct ATC frequency manually doesnt help either (with using the correct radio button). And yeah, I've tried starting from ramp, hotstart, in midair etc. I even read some old stuff about loading up a mission, then changing some little detail, saving it and then viola! But no no no  Now then...is it just me? As it is now I have no comms at all.

I couldn't take it anymore - I just had to get my shit sorted. Can't be a semi-pro all life ;) -
How to drop bombs, getting them armed and so forth.
SFC Tako replied to SFC Tako's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Hey, I'm happy to help :) But I'm not getting the full understanding of this esrb-gizmo. If I just have the settings I have in the video clip I keep dropping everything, gun pods too... I tried setting the ESRB to #5 (before putting safety off) to see if I could get the innermost bomb on my starboard side to drop (my logic being #1 is the outermost starboard bomb, #2 outermost port bomb and so on)...but as it happened, having the ESRB set to #5 drops my PORT innermost bomb! OK, so I clicked trough the ESRB-meter and dropped everything else in the process, including gun pods :music_whistling: Anyone able to explain russian logic to me? See I don't know how far I'll dig into this, wanna start flying again. Besides, them bombs are not very useful unless you're in for suppressing the civilian population in third world countries and/or dropping bombs on disgruntled Vietnam veterans running around in the jungle, rescuing POWs and what not. EDIT (20 minutes later): WHAT IF THE DEVS COULD MAKE THIS "TECHNICIAN" USEFUL?! (He's just sitting there, like an idiot) How about issuing commands to him via a few buttons? Like "OK, Boris - arm the middle pair of bombs!". And make it not happen if the middle pair are gunpods or something else than bombs. He could even give a snappy answer like "No comrade Colonel, I can't do that - those are not bombs!" -
I'm a newbie at this chopper but having spent over 2hrs reading old posts and not getting anywhere and not finding a single video about it on youtube...well, here you are :) Relasing bombs LINK REMOVED, CHECK BOTTOM FOR NEWER CORRECT LINK And thanks, fjacobsen for bringing this up earlier! ESBR is an important tool!

Hovering at higher altitude (not in ground effect)

Hovering at higher altitude (not in ground effect)
SFC Tako replied to Zooropa's topic in DCS: UH-1H
:megalol: I myself could hardly land at all three weeks ago. You just need to try things out, do some stupid stunts...or do some bookreadin', whichever is most fun for you ;) EDIT: But about the hovering, the police in my town always have a chopper up there way high up when we have football games. It's like 800 feet up and it's always hanging perfectly still, even on windy days. I bet it's just a hologram! -
Hovering at higher altitude (not in ground effect)
SFC Tako replied to Zooropa's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Hey, Zooropa! My only take on high-altitude hover is that it's very tough. I've tricked myself into believing I'm hovering perfectly at high altitude but having looked at the replays (from outside view) I can see I'm drifting as hell...so I'm pretty shitty at it, need practice and lots of it ;) Landings then? Yeah, I'm getting slightly better than before and I think we have pretty much the same approach to them. Coming in low, pulling back on the cyclic while dropping the collective (and slowly pulling it up as need be) can help a lot and keep you out of vortex. You'll probably get some warnings from textbook pilots but hey, if you're in a hurry - you are in a hurry :) Me in a hurry in bad weather Coming back to high altitude hovering - practice landing on high buildings and move in and out of their "roof effect". It's a blast  I just wish I could put soldiers on top of buildings for pickups, haven't figured it out yet  -
Mission 6 "Patrols" Ridiculousness
SFC Tako replied to ScottishMartialArts's topic in Missions and Campaigns
And you were right! On my latest attempt the CO just flew in circles until his petrol ran out, I went to base and landed and failed the mission  But hey guess what, this was my second attempt tonight - the attempt before actually played out exactly as you described! We went to look at Diego's wreck (having done one overwatch for another insertion by them other fellas) but that CO flew like an idiot and I crashed on a slope trying to locate him  So this had me wondering a lot as to why for Pete's sake I couldn't trigger that wreck search the second time tonight...but NOW I KNOW!!! In retrospect, I do remember that I didn't wait for the CO to land on my second attempt. Big thanks, golani79! Respect :) [gang sign] UPDATE (11-19-2014): I made it! Funny thing is I thought I was free to go as the CO said "Break off - choose your LZ" and such...well as I did a dumbass macho descent my own commander lost it again: "I said keep up, Rookie - I'm gonna smack your head" followod by "YOU*VE LOST YOUR LEADER - RTB". WHAT WHAT WHAT?!?! After all blood, sweat and tears and following a CO gone apeshit behind the controls, having me nearly crashing into them mountainsides, nearly losing him. NOOOO!!! Well anyways, I landed Vietnam-style and got a "MISSION SUCCESS!" but only at 70%. But hey, I checked and I can now move on to the next mission. It don't mean nothin' man, I'm done with this mission now :) -
Mission 6 "Patrols" Ridiculousness
SFC Tako replied to ScottishMartialArts's topic in Missions and Campaigns
DANG! I'm at the same spot. Naturally I suspected something was wrong after about five minutes of figure 8's over the base so I started my timer...flew around another ten minutes, got bored and called it in with tower, went in for a landing and FAILED before I'd even touched down (yeah my own chief got into a fit or something...what a dumbass). What I managed to observe was that another chopper was just in the process of landing (whilst the CO kept orbiting). Y'know what? Maybe if I'd just waited ONE more minute in the figure 8-game, that other chopper might have landed properly and then maybe the CO would have went in for a landing... But hey, I really don't mind - this whole UN-campaign is just AWESOME!!! I love this game! :pilotfly: I'll figure it out tomorrow - gotta watch Walking Dead now. -
Yes sir, I'll turn it down a few notches. Any kid can read this :book: Oh and Yurgon, I'm glad this forum isn't like the rest of the internet :) EDIT: made that video disclaimer visible straight up :)
-
This is what I put in the videos from the vey beginning: (disclaimer: I don't know a lot about real flying or any real aerodynamic theory except wikipedia stuff, but my "advanced" theory really works in the game) It's in the bottom of them so I guess you've missed them. That and the whole atmosphere of the videos and the title and so on - that should tell people a lot. At least that's what I think. You know like: "I'm not for real, I'm not a real flight instructor, I'm just trying to land my chopper in this here game". So I think I've been pretty clear about my intentions and level of sincerity. If you're still hung up on this "guide"-word ('cause that's your real problem, ain't it?) aimed at players and nothing else...well, I don't know what to do really. I'm not changing a thing since I think I've done this thing the right way from the get go. But I wanna drop this and get flying again. We can agree to disagree as you've stated (makes good sense). For a guy taking things pretty seriously I really gotta hand it to you: you're civilized! Not for once have you used any foul language, any hint of insult or character assasination even though I'm pretty sure I might be a bit "too much" for you. You've just stuck to logical arguments, based on fact and reason...I just had to make a note of it 'cause it's just SO DAMN RARE these days. To sum things up: We've got very opposite personalities I guess. But we'd make a perfect team in the Huey, you taking things seriously, flying the correct way and me chewing gum, smoking, flying like a cowboy! Yihaaa! Yup, we'd be the best pilot team ever ;) EDIT: You're damn right about this being a SIMULATOR, and a damn fine one at that. Me, I tend to forget that. I just get carried away and play it like a game. I wouldn't recommend it for any of my regular gaming buddies. Hmmm...that's weird - I'm too serious as well. Not like you but still...
-
Yeah, well - I think we have different levels of sincerity. If I took this seriously I'd agree with you full on, but I don't take this seriously and I firmly believe new players can be helped by my "guide". But if they're like you, pilots...then by all means never look at my stuff again. Oh yeah, got a new expert video out - feel free to axe it ;)
-
Hey thanks, jay43 - them takeoffs have been pretty tough too (it's not like in Battlefield!). But I gotta say, once you get to know this bird, the flying is just awesome! :) (and I've still got some learning to do)
-
Thanks all for the praise and feedback. jay43: I know she's an old girl, but hey - I'm stupid :pilotfly: hideki2: I'll try to remember your points better ;) An old pilot told me to try a fast descent from 2000ft and then just land ASAP. Almost like an autorotation but with engine on (i WILL master real autorotation later). Well anyhow, I tried it. I crashed. I tried it again...and again and again. I made another video that most old hands will have a laugh at but I do believe newcomers can benefit from watching it as well. This Huey is just SO MUCH FUN to fly!
