  1. The mig15 is also really fun but combat is difficult only having canons and no radar (I'm awful with canons). The mig21 is my favorite plane so far. It's a blast to fly and just following the start up procedures is a joy. Either way I think whichever modules you choose you will have a ton of fun.
  2. Ya without working AWACS it's definitely a lot harder. Especially since some servers have awacs but the radio channel just isn't configured, so other pilots in say, f15s will be able to use it, but you won't. I generally tend to just stay low and circle the bullseye until something pops on the rwr. Then I look around and try and get a visual. Head on is always going to end badly but unfortunately without AWACS, is going to occur fairly frequently and then...aim 120
  3. I'm thinking the whole toggle thing is just a typo. Doesn't make much sense to have a realistic clickable cockpit and then limit the mappings to a single on/off function. Especially with something like the radar which is a 3 position toggle, wouldn't be possible. It most likely means in addition to the existing options. This would also be a problem with non momentary toggles. I'm currently building a control box to use in combination with my x55 and with regular toggle switches you'd have to map the same function twice and if by chance you click the landing gear up its going to be out of sync of you go to use the toggle which would be very annoying.
  4. Sounds like their intention is to release the alpha in November but I would treat it like any pre purchase and assume that delays are always possible. Of course I'm just assuming.
  5. Once the za is released it will be interesting to battle the mig 21 with it and the other way around seeing how it can carry similar armaments.
  6. So if I just download the beta and install it to the regular release directory it will just overwrite any different files and my saves, control schemes and such will remain the same?
  7. Now that I've gotten used it I find the limited radar isn't an issue so long as you stick to ambush tactics. Got 2 more kills on 104th yesterday just by staying low and using my eyes and rwr. Got a visual turned on the radar, locked the f15 and pulled vertical as he was right above me, had launch Auth almost immediately due to the short range and he didn't even see it coming. It definitely has its short comings but to me at least, it's far more rewarding.
  8. Got another 2 kills against modern fighters tonight so far on 104th. An f15 and an su27. Starting to get the hang of it, stay long watch the rwr, pop the radar on to get a quick picture and then lock the target fast if anything not friendly comes up. The su27 took my down at the same time but the f15 didn't see it coming.
  9. Being fairly new to the mig 21 myself and only getting my first f15 kill online the other day, I may not be of that much help, though I can fly the thing pretty damn well. The rwr only gives direction it does not give distance or tell you what type of threat it is, but due to the angle of detection, if say you have a threat in front of you, you can pull up on the stick and a decent angle and see if the rwr is still going crazy. If so, then it's most likely an airborne threat, if not it is probably a SAM. The mig21 also relies heavily on AWACS for guidance which most online missions don't have configured for the mig. What you can do, is fly to the bullseye, stay low and keep radar off until something comes up on the rwr or just periodically. Visual detection is your best bet though at which point you can maneuver around the target, turn on radar, and get a lock. Long range engagements against f15s are not going to go well.
  10. Officially prepurchased!!! I do have a question though, I know there us the open alpha in November but what is this I keep hearing about early access?

  12. Thanks, I don't see myself leaving the mig21 anytime soon. Kills may be rarer but it's so much more fun to fly and it feels like a much bigger achievement lol. First session that I flew the f15 online I got 3 kills. Took 4 or 5 sessions to nail down some decent tactics with the mig21 and the help of everyone in this thread (I've read most of it lol). I have not gone after any a10cs yet, but I think I should try that soon. Also, I think the crashing guy counts, it was probably because you cause him to panic :p
  13. There actually got my first online kill in the mig21. Right off the bat too on the 104th. Took off from maykop, barely flew out, kept the radar off until I looked up and saw an f15, locked him, he tried to evade a little and then down he went.
  14. Was so close to getting my first f15 kill on the 159th tonight. Followed the heading towards two f15s thanks to AWACS. Got behind both of them and got a lock. Followed for several km until I got close enough to fire. Chaff ate my R-3Rs and then the second one got behind me and took me out with the Canon. Close though and exciting and fun regardless.
  15. That's some really good to know stuff, thanks a lot. I can never tell where it's coming from so I just dodge and weave and get hit everytime. I'll try a split s and go back as fast as I can and see if I have better luck.
  16. Prepurchasing Tuesday I think.
  17. Was wondering the same thing myself, actually asked it in the September update for leatherneck. Awaiting response but I imagine it will be updated.
  18. Any tips on avoiding being hit after be locked by a Sam? Or are you pretty well screwed? Chaff and Flares are only so effective and I figure from a ground target it's a lot harder to escape.
  19. Oh, I also just thought that just locked the throttle in place. Thanks.
  20. You are actually supposed to pull a hard negative g maneuver prior to landing as part of the shutdown procedure  I don't actually know though, doesn't make much sense for it to continue to run after cutting the fuel. I have yet to have a need to shut it down after so I haven't tried.
  21. I know this is much further down the line, but will the kneeboard and programmed RSBN and Arc channels be updated for the Nevada map in the mig 21 when it is released?
  22. Thanks for the advice. Since the AWACS channel is often not configured on a lot of online missions it's been a struggle finding targets lol. Everytime I get a hit on the rwr I get my hopes up and it turns out to be a Sam.
  23. That would be great :D
  24. I haven't but I will now, cheers :pilotfly:
