[NO BUG] RWR / Jester picking up launches on other aircraft
boscoh replied to backspace340's topic in Bugs and Problems
I too am getting this, but also from enemy aircraft that are getting BRA called by AWACS as being close to 200 miles away. They're firing at something on the other side of the map but my RWR is picking it up. -
Is it on the roadmap to support --webgui and --server --norender, used together? Server that doesn't render with a webgui would be very good.
-
Experience around 20:00Z. Load times into the server were very fast. Took maybe 2-3 minutes. I sat in the spectator lobby for 5-6 minutes unable to select an aircraft even after typing blue into chat. Seems like the server reset to a new mission once during this time. I sat in the lobby unable to do anything until eventually DCS crashed with a Visual C++ Runtime error.

Yet another "What should I upgrade" question
boscoh replied to tn_prvteye's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well, you have a pretty balanced build right now. Upgrading either the CPU or GPU is going to throw the balance off, so you really need to upgrade them both to get the most out of it. However, if you're going to upgrade one, the best value is going to be a GPU upgrade. How much you want to spend is the question. You'll get plenty of opinions. I'd either go for an RTX 2080 or a new/used 1080Ti if you find a good one cheaper. Whether you'll be happy with the improvement is very subjective, but in my opinion if you're going to spend the money that is the minimum you should be looking at spending to make it 'worth it'. You'll be bottlenecked until you upgrade your CPU and memory, but still get a good FPS improvement. -
Looking for advice on new build
boscoh replied to Pricer27421's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I had the same dilemma this week when my last hotas broke. After reading reviews on the second spin of the X56, issues with stick and mini stick requiring dead zones still exist. For that amount of money, I will pass. Newegg and Walmart both have the Warthog on sale for $350 right now which is about what they go for used on Ebay. Until I found the sale, I was going to do the Thrustmaster T1600 combo on Amazon for $110. If you end up getting the X56, now is the time to do it from a place with extended holiday returns (Amazon, and I think Newegg), so you until the end of Jan to find issues with it and send it back. -
I just have a Belkin smart plug that I plug anything into when I want to see how much power it uses. My rig does around 400W when stress testing the whole system, and between 200-350W in DCS playing in 4K. I5 4670K @ 4.0ghz, 2080Ti FE, 16gb DDR. I was disappointed when my 850W Corsair HX Gold power supply turned out to be the issue for reboots after I installed by 2080Ti, but it was 5 years old. The EVGA G+ 1000W that I replaced it with was only $30 more than the 750W PSU Best Buy had. Having been 5 years since my last PSU, it surprised me how cheap it was to get a 1000W unit. It's running like a champ and is likely very efficient due to the relatively light load. I'm expecting 500ish watts when I upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and memory soon.
-
Yep, the card needs to be flashed with a new BIOS to go over a certain power setting. You shouldn't be having issues though at the stock clock, and I wouldn't think you'd have issues OC'd to the level the Founders Edition cards are. Those cards can't be flashed to unlock more power. Were you overclocked? If so, to what settings?
-
Both your cpu and gpu are very power hungry compared to their Intel and Nvidia counterparts, and you have a lot of devices drawing power, but 1600 is high. Power supplies are one of the more subjective things. As long as your PSU meets your wattage requirements you are good. Power supplies are more efficient the lighter the load is against their max wattage rating, and there isn't a lot of price difference between, say, 750W and 1000W relative to the cost of your entire rig. The difference may be $30-50. You are probably requiring between 700-900W under load. I'd go with a 1000w power supply. I recently bought an EVGA G+ 1000W from best buy for $99. Grab that and put a kill-a-watt or a belkin power meter between your pc and the surge protector, and see what you get during stress testing. I had the same issue as you with my 5yr old 850W when I put in my RTX 2080TI. I put in a 1000W even though I'm not using anywhere near that, and it's been solid since. I was disappointed, but I got 5yrs out of the PSU and it never gave me a lick of trouble.
-
Nice! Have you measured how much power your system is pulling? Based on the cpu and GPU alone you should be around 500W under heavy load taxing both cpu and gpu. What model of power supply are you running? (PS - I'm a nerd so this stuff really interests me)
-
You don't need a 2080ti for either of those resolutions if you're not doing VR and the extra horsepower would be largely wasted as performance will be heavily CPU dependent, and I don't think yours would push enough to make an 2080ti worth the investment. 1080ti and 2080 are faster than Vega 64 in most scenarios. If Vega 64 and 2080 are equally priced (and they are, or very close depending on exact models), the 2080 will likely get you a little more bang for the buck and future proof you for if/when ray tracing takes off. If you're happy with what you have, stick with it. If you want to change I'd look for a 1080ti or 2080 (non ti).

Looking for advice on new build
boscoh replied to Pricer27421's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Good build. The 9700K and 2080 are a good pair at 1440p. You would probably hit the CPU bottleneck at 1440p in most scenarios with a 2080Ti. 2080 will get you around the same level of performance or slightly more than a 1080Ti with marginal increase in cost. You're basically buying into the future of ray tracing, and that your card will support it in titles that use it. It would be worth the investment to me, but that's my opinion. NVME will help you in workloads other than DCS. I noticed a very slight improvement in load times going from a SATA SSD to an NVME SSD, and not much else where DCS is concerned. If you do photo or video editing, you will notice a massive increase in performance where that stuff is concerned. PSU - if you are going to stay with the 2080 you are fine. If you are considering upgrading to the 2080Ti or adding anything extra (liquid cooling, etc), I would bump it up to the EVGA G+ 1000W. This part is $99 at Best Buy right now. For what it's worth, I run a 2080Ti FE on this same power supply - I had to upgrade from a several years old 850W Corsair Gold power supply due to stability issues once the GPU went under load. -
How does the vega 64 do in dcs?
boscoh replied to TonyStovepipe's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Its a fine card if you want an AMD card. I don't have experience with Vega in DCS, but I came from a Radeon 7950 when I upgraded to an RTX 2080Ti a couple months ago. DCS ran GREAT on my (heavily overclocked) 7950. Dollar for dollar, the RTX 2070 is a better value than Vega 64. There are a few games that perform really well on Vega, but for the most part the 2070 will outperform the Vega by quite a bit. Your CPU will be the bottleneck for Vega 64 or 2070, the resolution you play at will determine how much of an issue that is for you. Lower the resolution, the more issue your CPU becomes. Here's a couple I found that are in the general price range, but not in stock unfortunately. Maybe you can source them elsewhere. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/evga-geforce-rtx-2070-black-edition-8192mb-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-31c-ea.html https://www.overclockers.co.uk/zotac-geforce-rtx-2070-mini-blower-8192mb-gddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-115-zt.html https://www.overclockers.co.uk/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2070-windforce-8192mb-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-1a4-gi.html -
I think this is a little overblown and not yet to the point of throwing out a stop sign for everyone considering upgrading. If you're on a really old card and you've been waiting, I wouldn't be scared by the slightly higher than normal failure rates being seen. Your card has a warranty, don't void it. If there turns out to be a defect found, odds are very strong that an RMA card is going to be fixed. If you're running a 1070-1080Ti or a Radeon Vega, I'd relax for a bit and let this work itself out as the upgrade for you won't be as major as someone coming from a much older card. There is always risk in being an early adopter.

I saw better DCS performance and less stuttering upgrading to 16GB RAM than I did moving from a SATA SSD to NVME SSD. If you don't have 16GB RAM, make that your priority.

DCS World 4K system opinions
boscoh replied to 159th_Falcon's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
At 4K the graphics card is going to be the biggest factor. In order of most performance judging by most reviews: 2080ti 2080 1080ti 2070 The 1080ti won't get you Ray Tracing when it is eventually supported in DCS. I would probably get a 2080, which is in the same price range as the 1080ti and offers slightly better or equal performance (depending on the game) and ray tracing support. In my opinion, I wouldn't build a system of those specs and use a 2070 for gaming in 4K. Spend a little extra and get a much better card suited to 4K. I'd also recommend upping your power supply to 1000W. The 2700x and any of the above mentioned graphics cards are very power hungry. Going to a 1000W power supply shouldn't cost much more. Look at EVGA Gold class power supplies as well. I recently picked one for much cheaper than the Corsair equivalent, and they are equally as reputable. For what it's worth, I run a 2080Ti Founders Edition with an overclocked I5-6700K and push 4k @ 60FPS+ pretty much everywhere except low over the forests of Caucasus, where it drops to around 40 FPS. This is with every setting maxed. -
You see, Iron hand's my thing.

When you shoot the shrike, just remember not to look at it. It'll blind you.

How old is your power supply? Power supplies degrade over time. I also had a Corsair gold 750W HX series, it was a little over 5 years old. When I installed my RTX some games would play fine, and others like DCS would have issues. I purchased an evga gold+ 1000w power supply and my issues went away, except as noted in my other post when overclocked. Different applications put different loads on pc components. It is highly possible that DCS is exposing hardware issues that other things may not. If you've tried all other suggestions in this thread, order a new PSU and try. It's much easier than a reinstall of windows. You can return it if it doesn't resolve the issue. Since you're on 750, I would do at least 850W. The evga one I bought was $99. Ensure the new psu is Modular and use a dedicated power cable for each input on your card (no single cable that splits out into each input on the RTX).
-
Do you have any additional overclock on your card? I have a founders edition 2080ti, and if I add any overclock whatsoever, I have performance and stability issues with dcs. DCS is the only application I've had trouble with so far, when overclocking. Everything else runs like a champ. In Afterburner, I have a profile with no overclock on it that I now use for DCS, and the game runs great.

The FE cards are ocing just as high if not higher than more expensive AIB cards on air. No reason I've seen to buy AIB except you can flash a secondary bios on some that will unlock more voltage without risk of bricking your card if it fails (FE only has one bios from what I've read). That would be useful on liquid cooling to really push the card. I'm at +176 core and +450mem on my FE 2080ti. DCS doesn't like any overclock on the card at all (even lower oc) and crashes, but I haven't had a problem in any other game.

I want a car where I can replace the low gas chime with the caution tone and Betty's "FUEL LOW". I would heavily base my buying decision on being able to do this.

Hey this is Boscoh from the vid. Hard to say. Fortunately I didn't have a 1080Ti so I didn't have to contemplate that problem. For me it was a no brainer coming from a Radeon 7950. Like I said in the vid, if you want the most fps in 4k (or VR) from a single card, the 2080ti is the way. If you're happy with what you have and dcs is really the only thing you play, then wait and see how raytracing develops.

Comfirmation that I need to a new graphic cards.
boscoh replied to thdman1511's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You'll be fine at 1080p medium settings. I run an overclocked Radeon 7950 at 1080p with most settings on high. My card is comparable to a gtx 760 when not overclocked. -
Is there anyone else having issues with the RADAR?
boscoh replied to Targanon's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
With this radar issue aside, combat in the EA Hornet is fine currently. You don't have HARM, ATFLIR, TWS, or guided weapons. Plenty of fun to be had with current AA, Rockets, and dumb bombs. Especially online with friends. -

Just downgrade to the version listed earlier in the thread. I did after they declared it fixed internally but didn't push a hotfix. Have had no issues playing online with it. Won't upgrade again til its fixed.
