PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
MilesD replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hey Guys, Sorry if you missed your numbers, We just post the "Now Serving" numbers and FireCat updates his Master list also. I usually do a separate post, but always update the first post in this thread and my sig with the "Now Serverng" numbers. No one losses their place in line, if you missed your spot and would like to order a PointCTRL just follow the procedure outlined in the first post of this thread and you will be put in the current group. I hope that helps, and sorry if their was a misunderstanding about being PMd when your number was up. Thanks for the interest, Miles- 3421 replies

New Chargers Important Notice for last weeks shipment: I am switching from a duel plug parallel charger to 2 independent chargers. If you received 2 black chargers, the flashing red lights work differently and will turn on and flash when the battery is not connected, that is normal. I will update the instructions and post the updated page here tonight. Thanks Miles- 3421 replies

Increasing PointCTRL Group Size Now Serving 71 to 90 Hey guys, Production is running smoother and not everyone on the list is ordering right now, so I am increasing the "Now Serving" group size from FireCats list to 20. And don't forget to join the PointCTRL Discord https://discord.gg/bsxYSF set up by AKA Clutter and Deano87, for real-time PointCTRL support with screen sharing. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hi Hammer, Thanks for the interest, Things are starting to roll along, I would guess anywhere between 4 and 6 weeks. You just have to get on FireCats list. There is no pre-payment or commitment, just a placeholder. If you decide PointCTRL is something you would like when your number is called, you just send an email. Thanks again, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Blacley, Sorry to hear of your health struggles. While PointCTRL is functional, its still a bit of a WIP. I am working on improving cursor resolution now through firmware updates. You can order anytime you like, and you will ship with the current group. No rush, what ever is best for you. When your ready to order, just go to the first post in this thread and follow the ordering instructions and email Carol at orders@pointctrl.com as FireCat said. Thanks for the interest, and I hope you feel better, Miles- 3421 replies

Hi Terry, Good question. My goal is to increase the weekly batch size starting next week with 20 kits. Maxing out between 50 to 75 units per week unitill the back orders here are complete. After we go live with the website sales, I only expect a few orders a week. As soon as the back-orders are complete, I am looking forward to spending time refining the firmware to provide higher resolution tracking, more features, and headset specific integration. And then of course, anything else you guys (I use the word guys in the non gender specific way) can think up, Thanks for the question Terry, Miles- 3421 replies

Update: A Big Thank You to AKA Clutter and Deano87 for setting up and administrating a PointCTRL Discord for us. It should be live soon. I think it will be a great repository for information, and as Clutter said, helping each other. Thanks Again Guys, I am trying to streamline the production, testing, and shipping process. I was shipping the orders as they came in. I think Carol and I can work much more efficiently if we ship once a week in batches. Here is the tentative cycle of operation (not the 8 steps of the cycle of operation your thinking of RatCatcher) 1) Thursday (2000 Zulu, +-5 hours) - Announce the Now Serving numbers 2) Tuesday (2000 Zulu, +-5 hours) - Send out all invoices for received emailed orders. 3) Thursday (1700 Zulu +-5 hours ) - Print postage for payments received. Prepare and box PointCTRL Kits, followed by step 1 for next weeks orders 4) Friday (1300 Zulu +- 4 hours) - Deliver orders to U.S. Post Office And since its Thursday, Now Serving 71 thru 80 Feedback welcome, Thanks Miles- 3421 replies

Yea, I am supposed to be retired, and this was supposed to be a hobby. But to be honest I am really enjoying this. I think I enjoy assisting people getting their PointCTRL up and running the most. Its also a great feeling knowing that people are enjoying their recreational time in DCS more. And the way things are looking, I think I will cover my initial investment, and may actually make a few dollars to help pay for the kids college. Every week I automate more task, which again is part of the enjoyment for me. One of the reasons FireCats list seems to be slowing down is that more and more people from previous groups are ordering, and the number of people ordering from the current "Now Serving" group is increasing. Speaking of FireCats List, Now Serving 61 thru 70 Thanks for joining the conversation Rymy, Miles- 3421 replies

So everyone here knows how helpful FireCat is to us all in keeping a proper que for PointCTRL. I am a bit of a nutty professor and would have not had the patience or time to maintain this critical list. On his own, he saw a problem arising and quickly implemented a solution. I am sure he has spent countless hours maintaining the list. I guess he felt his huge contribution helping me and the community was not enough, and he informed me to be on the lookout for a package from Germany. I am not comfortable accepting gifts to begin with, tonight I see a box from Germany. I am thinking by the size and weight of the box, and my somewhat known taste for the beverages, I thought, wow, I bet this is a beer stein from Germany. Well, it's certainly wasn't a German Beer Stein!!!!!! While I want to be upset with FireCat, I cant help feeling overwhelmed by his thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you Sir, I wish you hadn't, but Thank you, Your friend across the pond, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey FireCat, I am trying to free you from your "Keeper of the List" responsibilities, and I didn't mean to pile this on you. You have just become the go to guy for organizing things. Sounds like Deano and Clutter have this. Great point about using a public server. Los is good with the server stuff. I have 250 Mbps internet (I think that's what it is, I know its the fastest I could get) so I think I will set up a machine as a dedicated server. Los and I will be having diner tonight with the wives, so maybe we can rope him into setting up the sever for us. Speaking of old school land lines FireCat, we still have to established the missed comms. Talk to you soon, Miles- 3421 replies

Thanks Deano, My son set me up, and then went off to NYC for a few days. If you would not mind setting that up, it would be great. Just let me know if you need anything from me. If there is a paid version of discord that has more bandwidth amd would work better, let me know where to send payment. I think ,y son used my standard MilesD, But I think PointCTRL would be better. PM for any other information you may need. emails, address, phone number. Thank you very much for doing this. Los, me, or anyone who wants to, can throw up missions. I have been wanting to get back to DCS and mission building for a while. Right before I got started with PointCTRL I wrote some Lua scripts for realistic automatic loading and loading of troops in Helos. It was pretty cool, Troops would automatically run to the choppa when the skids hit the ground, the aircraft would shake as they piled in, you would hear them bumping around, communicating, equipment sliding on the floor, and even being flatulent sometimes when they took the load off their backs, I was going for realism. I think Los tried a version of it. Back on Topic: Whatever you guys feel is the best way to do this, just go ahead and execute among yourselves. Community driven is always better, please don't feel you have to check with me. Just let me know where to make payments, when required. Thanks everyone, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Outcast, PointCTRL is fully functional and now shipping, see page 1 of this thread, but it is still a work in progress meant for enthusiast lever flight simmers. Most of the future updates are available through online firmware updates. Thanks for the interest, Update: Carol tells me that invoices have been issued to all respondents up to number 60. If your number is below that and you would like an invoice, please email her at orders@pointctrl.com. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Panther, It could be any number of things, but we will get it resolved. When it sticks, do a quick battery check. If it shows less than 1/4 of the way up the screen it may be the battery. The left one always runs out first because its used more. The way PointCTRL works is it sends a specific signal telling the HMS to press and hold the mouse button. When the button is released it sends a different signal that tells the HMS to release the mouse. When the battery gets low it usually starts missing the release when a button is pressed quickly, because of the high current draws in quick succession. I have been meaning to put a watchdog in the FCU program to prevent a missed release. I will take a look at the FCU code again. I will also make a few changes to the HMS code to mitigate missed button releases. If you get this malfunction on a full battery or after the new firmware update tomorrow, i will just send you out a new FCU. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Has anyone else been having this problem? Miles- 3421 replies

Good point Deano Yes, if the IR survey shows any stray IR light and that stray IR source is closer to the center of the field of view, the cursor will jump back and fourth to which ever source is closer to the center of the FOV. It can also jump if you are using a Steam Base Station, but even then, you have to be pointing and looking directly at it. I think RatCatcher is referring to the precision of the cursor, which I am not completely satisfied with either. While it does the job now, I am working on improving it. I have three methods that can be used in any combination and are showing promise. I am still working through them and don't want to hold up shipping for non critical improvements. To be honest, with me, its kind of like the the screen door effect, you only notice it when you are looking for it. But there is still some low hanging fruit left, so it will definitely get better. Our sensor can be optimized for 4000 x 4000 resolution which is greater than the Reverb can display. That being said, I have had some bad sensors with defective pixels. I personally test each PointCTRL before shipping, but I am sure defective units will slip though. If your resolution does not match what you see in the videos, then please let me know, because there is a problem. Another use for discord screen sharing. @ RatCatcher, Thanks for bringing up the cursor resolution. That type of feedback is helpfull to everyone. Others probably noticed the same thing, but because it was posted, I am able to share where we are going with it. Thanks Deano and RatCatcher Miles- 3421 replies

Crap, and there I was, blathering on. Am I reading the Vodafone rates wrong or is that a 262 quid charge. Please let me know if they don't waive the fee. U.S. international law requires that I pay 50% of those charges. Today's priority is getting my son to set me up on Discord so this does not happen again. I honestly don't know why I have a problem figuring out some apps. I think My brain is wired rather oddly. I intuitively visualize the movement of electrons and the magnetic fields through circuits and the elements inside of semiconductors at the atomic level. But when I fire up my cell phone, I stare at it for a long time before I can remember how to make a simple phone call. I sign up for discord, log in, and I am stuck just staring at the screen, just like my cell phone. And don't get me started on spelling. Miles- 3421 replies

A follow up to RatCatchers HMS not updating. After we finished talking at length about the glory days, we tried it on a laptop and it updated. I got confused and gave wrong info on the beeps. I have to check the documentation. Standard Reset One press and release of the white button. Two quick chimes will sound 1 second apart. First chime is PointCTRL disconnecting, followed immediately by a second chime which is PointCTRL reconnecting and rebooting Firmware Update Double press the white button. Two, single chimes separated by 8 seconds. The First chime is PointCTRL disconnecting, it then waits 8 seconds for a firmware update. If no update is performed after 8 seconds, the second chime sounds, and PointCTRL resets and reboots immediately. If performing a firmware update, after the update is performed the second chime will sound and PointCTRL will reboot with the new firmware. We will have to wait and see if it updates on his desktop PC. I suspect there may be a com issue with the USB ports recognizing PointCTRL between the beeps while in programming mode on RatCatchers system. if anyone has had any issues with firmware updates, please tell. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

That a great Point Panther, I will add that to the firmware instructions. The auto updater searches the ports for PointCTRLv1, but it sometimes misses it if its going through a Hub. I have had that exact problem, Thanks for sharing that. Great idea, I talked to my son about doing that on discord. For old guys like RatCatcher and myself, sometimes the old school land line is best. On a similar note, I think I talked to FireCat about possibly organizing online flight nights for those who are active here. I think it may be the only thing that will get me flying again. I do miss it. It's really nice to see everyone jumping in here, it's truly appreciated by many. Hey FireCat, any more thoughts on organizing an online flight night. Hi Kaltokri, I know shipping has been slow, but I learn something from each new user that can improve PointCTRL for everyone. I then take the time to make the improvements before the next batch ships out. Thanks for understanding, Miles- 3421 replies

Hi Skunk, The red LED indicates PointCTRL is powered and running. As as long as the computer is on or the USB is port is on, PointCTRL will be running. The Left button on the HMS only tells it only to stop sending commands to the computer. I have my test units running 24/7 for endurance and reliability testing. I now run 2 PointCTRLs. A HMS for VR, and a SMS (Static Mounted Sensor) for fixed monitor applications, and have changed them to a individually switched USB hub to turn them on and off. Good question, Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies
