Barthek's CAUCASUS REDONE 2022
bandit648 replied to Barthek's topic in Texture/Map Mods for DCS World
I don't believe the current mod changes the view distance. The render distance of trees, building, etc. is controlled in the graphics.lua file which isn't included in this mod. DCS looks MUCH better with a higher render distance. ED really needs to increase the render distance options so we don't have to go into the config files. With 2.9.3 I have the view distance configured higher then I ever have and performance is amazing. Of course if you play in VR ignore all that and keep your view distance low. -
Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
The cirrus textures are WIP and I'll try improve on those. Its harder then it seems due to the way the textures are tiled across the sky. It makes it difficult to have much variation, such as different cirrus in different sections of the sky. IRL cirrus are pretty random and not uniform across the sky. The thing I hate about the stock textures is how bad they look up close. They look better or worse depending on the lighting but sometimes you can even see the lines from the method used to create a tiled texture.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
2/24/2024 - Update to version 7 - NEW cirrus cloud textures - Cirrus clouds now move and can be seen moving - Cirrus clouds don't fade in and out any longer. They don't change for 24 hours - Tuning and tweaks to several presets - Updated config files for compatibility with DCS 2.9.3.51704 **The cirrus cloud behavior and appearance are drastically changed in this update. There are 4 cirrus cloud textures and they usually are blended with each other, creating a variety of different looking skies. After loading a mission, if you want to change the look of the cirrus clouds simply re-load the mission by pressing SHIFT-R. Sometimes changing the date and/or time in the mission editor changes up the cirrus also. If you want to turn off cirrus clouds completely you can edit \Bazar\shaders\enlight\cirrus.fx in the MOD folder. Change line 36 in that file to: static const float cirrusThickness = 0; Make sure to disable/re-enable the mod in OVGME after making the change. If you think the new cirrus sucks and you want to go back to default delete the following files from the MOD folder and disable/re-enable in OVGME: \Bazar\shaders\enlight\cirrus.fx \Bazar\Effects\EffectTextures.zip Enjoy!- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
That's right, you have to use the "thunderstorm" precip setting to see lightning and hear thunder. I wish there was a way to change that and make it available on the normal presets but I don't think there is. Honestly the lightning isn't that great anyway. It spawns all over the place and not just in and around clouds. We'll need to wait on ED to improve that one.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I did that before but some people like the cirrus so I enabled it again. I like them also but wish we could choose different cirrus types or clear sky. They appear at mission start. There are 4 different cirrus cloud textures and they normally appear in pairs during a 24 hour period. They fade in and out based on the parameters in the cirrus.fx shader file. The textures used change based on the date and time. So if I wanted to see a different cirrus texture set I usually change the date. One option I was thinking about was to create a standalone cirrus cloud mod each with different textures or a clear sky. Then set the fade period to 24 hours. You would have to decide which one to use before launching DCS and enable in OVGME. This would work but isn't very user friendly since you'd have to use OVGME to configure your cirrus clouds prior to launching DCS.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Yes, but then you get 60 minutes with no cirrus clouds after the first 60 minutes period. Its 60 minutes with clouds, then they fade out and no clouds for 60 minutes before they return again. Hope that makes sense. I haven't figured out a way to shorten the fade out period.- 290 replies

bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
So your OVGME config there is pointed at your saved games folder. Just create a new profile and name it something like "DCS Root". Point the Configuration folder in OVGME to your DCS install location. Create a new Mods folder also and drop the weather mod in there. I have separate profiles for the DCS main install folder and Saved Games in OVGME and it works fine. With your config now its installing the weather mod in your saved games folder which won't work.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I think I've arrived at a good solution for the cirrus layer. I created new cirrus textures that are similar to the originals but higher resolution. I decided not to use the more dramatic cirrus textures as they don't blend as well with the volumetric clouds. I also increased the transition time to 15 minutes. This makes the change a little less jarring then the default 3 minutes. Here's the default cirrus up close: Here's one of my updated cirrus textures- 290 replies

You need the have OVGME pointed at your DCS install folder. The "bandit648 weather mod" folder should be dropped in your OVGME Configuration mods folder. Here's what my OVGME settings look like: null- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I'm testing out some HD cirrus textures for the next update. The current shader generated cirrus layer has this annoying behavior where the cirrus clouds fade in and out every 3 minutes or so. The good news is I've figured out how to increase that. Right now I have it extended to 15 minutes. The only downside is that its another 15 minutes before the next cirrus layer fades in. Still trying to adjust that. I'd be thrilled if they included my presets. ED normally isn't too keen on adding user made content to the sim though.- 290 replies

I agree, it's kind of buried in here and hard to find. The only other sub-forum it fits in is Texture/Map Mods. Maybe move it to the main DCS Modding forum? @BIGNEWY Any suggestions on where to move this thread to make easier to find?- 290 replies

1/27/2024 - Updated to version 6 - Fixed small issues in several presets - Reworked "Scattered Showers 5" preset. Looks much better now - Minor adjustments to "Low Level Stratus 5" and "Nimbostratus with heavy rain". Clouds have a slightly softer look now.- 290 replies

Thanks Rob, I appreciate that. While we don't have true dynamic weather yet at least we have great looking clouds. I'll try to share more screenshots and maybe produce a cinematic video to put out there. I hope people will enjoy the mod as much as I am.- 290 replies

It was very tedious for sure, but I'm happy with the results. I gave up on modding the shader generated cirrus layer for now. The new high level cirro presets blend nicely with the cirrus layer.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I haven't been able to create a preset for cumulonimbus type thunderstorms yet and it may not be possible with the current cloud rendering. ED says they will add these types of clouds later this year. You still can create some thunderstorms like I show in my screenshots using the "nothing" clouds preset. See steps below. The lightning spawns all over the place not just in clouds. I can't do anything about that. To create thunderstorms: 1.) Select NOTHING from the Clouds Preset menu 2.) Configure the base altitude as desired 3.) Adjust the thickness to something between 15000-30000ft 4.) You can choose any density setting but I added six new ones. Density 11 - 16 are tweaked for thunderstorms. 5.) Choose Thunderstorm or Rain from the Precptns option 6.) I recommend adding a lot of wind and turbulence as well 7.) Experiment with settings to get the look you want and enjoy! Nope, not possible with current weather system.- 290 replies

Weather mod v16 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I'll add that low level stratus 4 preset back in and post an update. If you want to re-enable the default cirrus disable the mod in OVGME and delete the "enlight" folder in \Bazar\shaders in the mod path. Then re-enable. If not using OVGME restore \Bazar\shaders\enlight\cirrus.fx to its original. I originally tried to mod the default cirrus and improve the low res textures used. The problem is that I can't figure out any way to change the fade in/fade out behavior. I think it may be hard coded in the weather.dll as nothing I've tried in the cirrus.fx file seems to change it. I opted to try using the volumetric clouds for the cirrus layer in this update.- 290 replies
