Take off after landing tail wheel issues
rtimmons replied to imacken's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
After landing several times with the takeoff assist turned off I can tell you a method that is working for me to help keep me straight on the runway. When I first touch down if the aircraft is moving straight then i apply breaks. If it starts to drift to one side then I remove the brakes and use rudders only to get it straight again. Once I am moving straight again I start applying brakes again. This works until the spit slows enough that the rudders begin to loose effectiveness. At that point i start using brakes and rudders together but am moving slow enough to keep it under control. On take off I am finding that it is better to use small amount of rudder since the Spit is very sensitive to air movement and also moving the rudders slowly helps because sometimes the Spit rocks back and forth from one direction to the other and if you correct to soon you can wind up over correcting. slyfly -

Art-J and imacken you were right...the Takeoff Assist was set to 100%. I always set all 4 of my prop planes to 0% and no Auto-Rudder so I was surprised to find the Spit a 100%. After setting it to 0% I have a pull to the left at initial throttle but it is easily controllable with rudder only and no brakes. Landing likewise had more drift on the runway also controllable with rudders but since you have to brake to stop it is slightly more difficult than takeoff for me. slyfly -
Take off after landing tail wheel issues

I not sure if this was already asked but have you checked you axis controls to make sure dcs world did not assign things to your flight controls that you don't know about. With new modules I sometimes find stuff assigned to my hotas like rudders assIgned to one of the throttles or something like that. Anyway I can remember having a similar issue because of it. slyfly -
Take off after landing tail wheel issues
rtimmons replied to imacken's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Absolutely serious....if it goes dowm straight it stays straight. It also stays straight on take off if you don't touch anything until it starts to lift off. I usually apply a tiny bit of right rudder just as it begins to lift but before that my feet are off the pedals assuming I was lined up well when I started. slyfly -

The spit seems easy to land to me and once i touch down I usually do not apply any rudder at all and the thing just goes straight. I ease down on the brakes using an axis (rudder toe brakes) slowly until it almost stops and it stays straight as a arrow the whole time.. The thing that helps me land the most is to come in just slightly fast flare out and fly a few feet over the runway for a while while the plane slows down. This gives me plenty of time to get stable and level and straight and all the things you need for a good touchdown. If you touch down smooth and straight with little or no bounce you will not be fighting all the turning this way and that after touch down. You will also not run out of runway. You need very little runway when you touch down smoothly. Flying a few feet over the runway gets you in the correct attitude for a three point landing with a very slight descent rate so you don't bounce. I expect the better I get at landing the less time I will spend flying level above the runway as my judgement improves. slyfly -
Here is a tactic I use .....I am not that good at dog fighting but I can sometimes beat 109s and 190s and come home alive. When turning push the throttle and rpm up and gain altitude. After completing the turn pull the throttle and rpm back and loose altitude to gain speed while cooling the engine. When @ 200 to 220 mph (more is better)you can begin to throttle up and turn again while gaining your altitude back. After a few loops you may need to brake out and fly off straight for a while to cool your engine and more so if your loops are really tight. Watch the temp gauge. Return to the fight when you have temp margin again. I learned from watching apeoftheyear videos on youtube. Basically you have to use the engine to do what gravity can not and let gravity do what it can do while your engine cools. slyfly

Spitfire first take-off; first "landing" observations

I have a couple of questions for anyone familiar with this aircraft... It seems to me that the tail wheel is not really free floating like it should be. After you release the left or right braking the aircraft does not continue in the direction it is pointed but instead continues to turn. I look at the tail wheel and it has not returned to the neutral position. I have to apply braking in the opposite direction to get the tail wheel to swing back to center. Does anyone know if that is how it should work. Seems like too much friction on the tail wheel turn axis to me. Also, the aircraft turns sharply with full rudder even if the brake is not applied at slow taxi speed. Is this normal? slyfly -
Brakes and tail wheel work really different in this bird and it's the hardest yet to controll on the runway. One brake controll on the stick operates left or right wheel brake or both depending on the rudder pedal position. The tail wheel just floats as far as I have been able to determine so far. Once you get it lined up on the runway it is pretty easy to stay on the runway for takeoff with just rudder control but I am having a really hard time staying on the runway when braking durring landing. It takes dierrent reflexes I don't quite have yet slyfly

62 here.....I started flying sims back in the pc dos days. I found DCS World a few years ago after my son made me start using steam so we could play Borderlands online together. I now have the oculus rift and love the vr experience for flying. I have a 32" ultra wide monitor but always prefer vr. I mostly like the helos and prop planes. The threat of being shot down by the young guys online just makes it more fun for me. I am glad to see I am not the only older guy though... slyfly

The addition of the Xbox interface seems to be where the issue is. If you go into the Xbox app settings then Game DVR settings and change the recording resolutions to High you can then get up to 60 FPS. It seems to be limited by the Xbox recording resolution. Not cool but is what it is...I haven't seen my system get up to 60 fps in vr yet anyway though...I was getting constant 30 FPS before this change. With just a quick check now I see FPS in the 50's except for the gazelle which was in the 20's.... slyfly i7 6700k 4.0ghz, GTX-1080, 32gb DDR4 3200mhz, Oculus CV1

MY game just crashed again. It was not hard to make it crash. I was running WCs Huey Apocalypse mission. As soon as all the AI is flying and I hammer down on my rockets my computer crashes. I have simulated this 4 times in a row. Your upload instructions are not difficult to follow. But please listen to this carefully because you do not appear to hear me on this. When the compressed Logs.zip is created as C:\user\Saved Games\DCS World\Logs.zip .....the forums upload tool does not recognize it as a valid file type for uploading. I tried this in firefox and Microsoft Edge. I am running Windows 10. So I tried moving the compressed Log.zip folder to the desktop and the upload tool would then accept it for upload however at the end of the upload process I get this error message: "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing. If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error." I feel like I am caught in an impossible loop here. I am not a computer illiterate person. Uploading files is not new to me. It is a sad shame that this is holding up progress on getting a solution to this problem that most likely affects all of us. Bottom Line: Helping you guys fix a problem is much more frustrating than living with a broken game. Therefore I an officially giving up on this report and will not submit anymore bug reports in the future. Evidently I am far too stupid for this process. slyfly

I was able to get the upload tool to accept the Log.zip folder for upload by moving it to the desktop. But once the file uploads I get an error message saying it is missing a security token and the upload can not be completed. I did notice that the folder is 10.6 meg which is more than than the 9.77 meg the upload tool allows.
-
Once again......when I follow your instructions it results in a folder being created named Logs.zip and not a file. The file upload tool only seems to accept files and not folders. I can not attach a zip file like your instructions above suggest because the upload tool will not allow the Logs.zip folder to be opened to the file level or selected for upload. Just a dead end. Mean time I will find out if this problem is peculiar to my PC or will happen on any PC in which case you should not need my log files.
-
When I do the send to compressed folder I get a WinRAR folder called Logs but the upload tool will not let me select it. Any suggestions? I should add that I can repeat this problem and would really like to get it fixed. It just crashed and I have not restarted the game so the logs should have the info you need. slyfly

I can crash my system by firing rockets in rapid succession from a Huey into a ground target. My PC locks up with a 60 cycle hum from the sound output and can not be recovered. I have to hold the power button to reboot it. This has happened both with offline sessions and when hosting an online session in version 1.5. slyfly system: I7 6700K 4.0Gig Proc; 32 Gig Ram; GTX-1080 Graphics card. Win 10; DCS version (just updated to latest version and still crashes)
-
It depends on whether the problem is due to AI running or slow graphics processing. You can check both issues. For graphics check to see if you get any better FPS when you play on online servers. If you are getting low FPS on online servers chances are you need more graphics power. For computing power check to see if more or less AI moving in the game causes problems. If more AI moving causes problems you need more computing power. My guess is both....DCS is graphics intensive and AI intensive. But you can use low AI or play online with a good graphics card and a slower PC pretty well. For heavy AI use you will need both.... slyfly

Mirknir, I fly on your server a lot and it is great. Thanks....(send money to Mirknir...it is worth it!!!!) I just have one small request.... to make the FOB a rescue point on the Khashuri map as it is in the Tuapse map. It takes a long time to fly back to Kutaisi and then get back to the action so I usually just avoid rescue pickups all together. When the field hospital is enabled I still usually have to go to Kutaisi anyway for fuel, repair or quit the game etc. so it is not that helpful. In the Tuapse map I often do rescue missions and then after I return to the FARB for reload/rearm/repair, I continue to do more combat missions or combo missions etc. There is not a huge amount of time involve in dropping off the rescues so i have time to do more stuff. thanks for listening slyfly

I prefer to always be at risk of getting killed. Even in a medic helo. I doubt that the Vietnamese ever hesitated to fire at medics anyway. Neither would terrorist. But the main point is that the ability to die is what makes life worth living (exciting) :) slyfly

You can use the Right Alt+J command to jump out of your aircraft and if is not started (at least for the A-10C) you will be standing outside of it. If you hit the command again you will be back inside it. The huey usually winds up in the air when you jump out it even after a shut down. You can jump out of it when it is damaged and it will be repaired when you re-enter it (kind of a strange feature) slyfly

I can land ok if I stabilize the momentum before touch down. It is just not so critical in a huey so I never worried about such a care full procedure. The huey is not easy to learn either but it dies skid on grass. The Gazelle acts as if it is placing the full weight of the helo on the skid as soonas it barely touches the ground when in fact the wieght is still being supported by the rotors. Since the skids are locked down and the weight is in the air the slightest momentum in any direction will cause the tip over. If this is the way Gazelles really land then that is ok with me. No argument here...But I won't be using it in situations where I need to get landed in a hurry and get out or get shot.
-
I deleted my SA-342 file and ran the repair utility which replaced the file. Afterwards I see no change. Still need to achieve zero momentum to avoid tipping over on grass landing. No sliding possible....
-
I don't know how to do any of the repairs you guys are suggesting but I will try to figure it out. Never had any problem before that required this. I can say that slide landing on grass is not a possibility with my version whatever it is. thanks randy
