  1. I've started threads about the same things before. The best I can ever get is anecdotal evidence.
  2. No worries, you can do the exact same thing in the F-15 with no problems. The Russian RWR capability in LOMAC isn't realistic, but for some reason I found the little picture of the airplane in the center with the lights around it to be more intuitive at first. :D
  3. Well, yes, obviously you can't be above them. I should have been more specific. What about co-altitude? As unlikely as it is to be EXACTLY at that same altitude, conceptually, wouldn't that work? EDIT for the benefit of scottysonfire: don't try to be at the same altitude. If you want to notch, go below them. :)
  4. Try this experiment: Create a mission in the mission editor. Put your plane of choice at 20,000 feet. I'd suggest a Russian one. I think the SPO radar warning receiver does a better job of helping you visualize what is going on if you are new to the concept. Now put an enemy plane about 30 miles away at the same altitude. No missiles for him, he doesn't need them to demonstrate notching. Now fly directly at him until he locks you up. Once you hear that lock tone, first place him on your beam, directly to your 3 or 9 oclock. Use the RWR to help you do this. Once you've done this, make a sharp dive to a lower altitude, keeping the bandit on the beam, your 3 or 9 oclock. Level off at 10,000 feet. You should find that the bandit no longer has you locked. You are now officially "notching" the bandit. You have him on your beam and you are forcing his radar to look down to find you. Now, turn back towards him. You'll notice that very quickly as you turn back towards him he'll lock you up. Now swing back around and put him at your 3 or 9 oclock again. You should notice that he has lost his lock again. You've just notched for a second time. You don't really have to be below the bandit to notch, but it does help. There's a bit more to it when it comes to using this defensively or offensively, but this should at least give you an idea of what to look for. :)
  5. Yeah, he did. @kiss4luna Here's the idea. Say I play an MMO. I pay $15 a month for it. Mr. Somebody says "Hey RedTiger, you're wasting your money! Why would you PAY to play a video game?" My response might be something like "Hey Mr. Somebody, what do YOU do for fun? How much do YOU pay for it?" The point is that fun is more often or not, expensive. People are perfectly willing to plunk down $50-100 for a night at the movies (easy to accomplish if you have more than one person, drinks are like $5, snacks are like $7. I live in South Texas, which is supposedly an area in the US with a "low standard of living", in other words things cost less. I can only imagine how much this would be on one of the coasts!), but they'll ridicule your decision to pay that much for a game. Moral of the story: you can pay for whatever you find fun, I can pay for whatever I find fun. ;)
  6. Falcon has more commands you can give, but there are two things that I like that work particularly well. First, you can issue commands to each member of your flight individualy, all at once, or to each element. Issuing commands to each element is what is handy and is missing from LOMAC. As of now you have to issue orders to everyone or each one at a time. Second, you have a command which is basically an "auto-sort". You can lock or bug a bandit in a group, give your flight this command and they will attempt to sort out all contacts in the group except the one you have chosen. They are far from perfect (many times you'll see two guys going for one bandit if you watch the ACMI), but its very, very useful, quick, and easy. LOMAC has a command called "attack my enemy". I keep meaning to experiment with that one and watch the ACMI to see if your wing man will indeed attack other contacts besides the one you've locked.
  7. Bolded for emphasis! You can do things to negate the short-commings of the enemy AI and you can do things to make it more challenging for yourself. What you cannot do easily is use AI wingman for anything other than very rudimentary tactics. Thats something that I don't really see changing any time soon, unfortunately. :( The best I've ever managed was sending out one element as a diversion while me and wingy go around and ambush them from another side. Even that was a struggle. You can get creative with WPs since you can send wingmen to them, but you're still working very hard for something very simple.
  8. The Irbis_E can pickup an F-22 at 3.218688 kilometers away? Yeah...so could a decent pair of human eyeballs. Are they trying to be being sarcastic?
  9. Bring on the Black Shark! I'm all naked and rarin' to go!!! :censored:
  10. It looks like you're just flying over a part of the terrain thats flat and uninteresting. Installing the LOReloaded textures and some better skins for the planes goes a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way. :pilotfly: http://www.lockonfiles.com <- your new friend. :)
  11. Depending on what platform you are fighting, you can afford to get well inside Rmax against the AI, even when you are lower than him. You can make up for it with a sprint above Mach 1. If you move around a bit, either up and down or switching from cold to hot (that is to say flying away from the bandit while you F-pole and then switching to flying towards) and get fairly low (2000 meters is good), his first missile will have difficulty reaching you, even if you've sustained your sprint well after launch (if you're fighting a slammer, you can even get away with starting this AFTER it goes active, although my BS alarm goes off at that and I don't wait that long ;) ) Give this a try; after you've digested the concept of F-pole, the notch, and how all this effects the BVR fight, try using regular R-27s. You'll be handicapping yourself quite a bit, but it will make you better with the ERs. If you want to make it even harder on yourself, fly the MiG-29A. You have no jammer (not that this matters against the AI anyways), precious little fuel, and you only have TWO shots before you're going to have to start notching hardcore to force WVR.
  12. @Majesco Hehe...reminds me of the time I tried to recreate the events of the chapter "Dance of the Vampires" from Red Storm Rising.
  13. I consider myself a realistic off-line user! :D Maybe I'm just special. :smartass: Seriously though, I don't know how you took that remark but you're probably right in most cases. The key to realism off-line is scale and scope.
  14. Wait...what? Maybe I misunderstand you, but if you're equating what I said with your opinion, I think you misunderstand me. I'm all for this type of thing. "To play realistically you have to be realistic about what you are playing"? Why thank you, yes I do. This mod looks like its trying to force people to play by the same rules that some already choose to play by. Think of it as a glimpse of what will be ;). *I* play by those rules, even to the point of gimping myself. If you do your best to use your aircraft the way it was intended to be used, with all its limitations you will see that things can be plenty realistic. Something as simple as flying a MiG-29 and capping your altitude range to 2k-20k feet to simulate your look-down limitations and side lobe problems or loading your Russian planes with mostly R-27Rs to simulate rarity gives you an entirely new perspective on this sim. I even go so far as to only use evasion tactics that I know from reality. No berioza jinking at the last minute.
  15. Actually, I wouldn't mind flying with these changes. The AI already is maxed out on genius stupidity and I don't see how this would make it any worse for the player. I'm interested to see what =RvE=Yoda has in store, if he decides to pursue it.
  16. With your edit, you are a bit closer to what I meant. Yeah, I'd like it to be for single player but its also the principle of thing too. I could try to rehash it but I did my best to be clear in my original post. We have some fixes for the sim but due to limitations, at the moment they are multiplayer only and limited to your server. If you have a similar enhancement for single player and coop, consider this my /sign for interest in it. If you created such a thing and put it up for grabs at Lockonfiles, I think you'd be surprised at how many downloads you'd get. :)
  17. You know, the more I think about this mod, the more irritated I become, despite my previous post. Not because I don't like this mod. Far from it. What irritates me is that it seems like there's about 20-40 people who, for all practical purposes, are the only known LOMAC players in the world. They all discuss stuff on these boards. Most of them also happen to fly organized multiplayer on an established set of servers. We all have a general understanding of what is realistic and what isn't, but the best thing that anyone can do is a LUA script that affects multiplayer only and only on one server. Don't ask me where I'm going with this one, because I'm not so sure myself. Maybe this is just venting? I'm man enough to admit that this may just be jealousy. ;) If this sim works like almost all other sims/video games, there's a vocal minority of people on the forums who play organized multiplayer and a vast majority of others who don't post and don't do multiplayer or do so, but anonymously. So instead of a patch or some other file that is easily located and downloadable by the general public, to repeat -- the best that can be done is a LUA mod on a single multiplayer server. There have been arguements against modifying the sim this way in the past. The whole notion of opening the source code has been labled as anathema to most who play online since the fear is that there'd be multiple versions and no standard to play by. Well, that is EXACTLY what has been done here. No longer anathema, now its the greatest thing since sliced bread. No one cared about whether or not the AI would be affected when they argued against the opening of the code. They were worried about how it would affect the PLAYERS. Ironically, this mod has zero effect on the AI, its ONLY affects the players! Like I said, I don't even know where I'm going with this. Frankly, I think this mod is great and I am amazed that so much was able to be done with so little! Those that put work into this did so with the best intentions and obviously did it out of their love of the sim. Maybe this is me finally realizing why there have been some strong cries in the past to open the source code. One of the biggest barriers to further opening the game to modification to me has always been those in the community who are against it. I'm not so sure that reason is valid anymore. Maybe now I fully "get it" when it comes to some of the complaining done post-DCS anouncement about the perceived abandonment of LOMAC. Some people decided to address the issue, but they could only do it in a way that really cannot be universally enjoyed. Would they have bothered to change the entire sim, AI and all, if they had the ability? My guess would be no. I know you all did what you could and you did it for those who probably will benefit the most...I'm 100% sure of that this mod is in the hands of those that can fully appreciate it. I just wish more could be done. :(
  18. Additionally, the throttle part of the x52 is the one that has the USB cable. The stick connects to the throttle with a PS2 connection. That alone allows you to use the throttle by itself. All CH products are they're own unit. You could, for example, use the Pro Throttle with a Saitek Cyborg.
  19. What's more interesting to me is the claim that holding back on touting the F-35 was done to keep from stealing some thunder from the F-22 and lessen the chances for funding. Now I've seen everything.
  20. For the record, I think this is some good work. I wish there was a way to make this work with single player! The ECM changes are great. It makes it more like Falcon where jamming denies you a lock until you are very close. I voted in favor of it because I would have no problems flying online with this. In fact, I'd rather fly online with these changes!
  21. Hey, I have a question. In reading the PDF you guys say you all realized that LOMAC will not be patched any further. Are you guys just making a very educated guess or has ED specifically said this?
  22. "You mean I have to actually use my EYES? What do you mean 'fly low and look at the ground'?!" :joystick:
