Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yup I've given up on the head-on evasions, way too risky (what's a gimbal BTW)! :smartass: You say that a last ditch maneuver is needed but how do you know when to do it? And during the close range shot how do you know when to do the ortho-roll? -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

Hmm I think I'll just stick to my mouse and keyboard since I'm only willing to spend a max of about R500 (about $65 U.S.). I don't wanna get a stick and find out it doesn't have enough buttons. That would be a huge bummer. I've been trying the proper vertical reversals and I can see that they will take a lot of practice to perfect. But from what I've seen so far it still doesn't seem to bleed off enough energy from the missile and it usually hits me anyway even though it is going a lot slower. Is this normal, or does it usually bleed of enough energy to stop the missile from hitting you? Do you have to pull a last second maneuver like the orthogonal roll or something? -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

AAAH! Okay now I get it! But I'm guessing that once you reach the peak you invert the plane so that you can start the descend quickly, and same for when you reach the trough? HAHAHA! Thank you! :) The reason I don't have a joystick yet is because I'm worried that it won't have enough buttons and I'll be forced to switch between the mouse, keyboard and stick. How many buttons does the average mid-range stick have? -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

I have the poor man's TrackIR... a mouse! I use the mouse and keyboard to fly and it seems to work pretty well. I've set it up so that I never have to take my hands off the mouse or WASD keys when flying. But the problem is that I have a 14 inch screen with a huge scratch in the middle so even during dogfight range I have a lot of trouble spotting the bandit. :( Okay, from your explanation is seems like I wasn't even doing vertical reversals. My idea of a vertical reversal is that, if you view your plane from your six, after a few vertical reversals a spiral will form behind you... -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

I tried doing some vertical reversals which work VERY well... but once I've evaded the SARH missile, my SA is completely buggered and I have to now look for him which is usually pointless since he lets off another one while I'm looking, and so I'm forced back into more vertical reversals. So your technique that you gave me works, but my SA doesn't. How do you "get back in the game" once you've finished your evasive maneuvers? -

Ok well I've been trying to evade SARH missiles but I can never do it! The only thing that seems to work is to turn 180 degrees from the missile and fly the other way... but that isn't any fun and takes away the intensity of A2A combat. :joystick::pilotfly: -

So when you talk about the orthogonal roll do you mean something like this?: -

I always hear about this orthogonal roll but have never seen it first hand before. What the heck is it?! Oh and what are vertical reversals? I thought chaff and flares are only used against incoming heat seekers, and in that case you don't get a warning right? -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

I usually have trouble spotting an incoming missile if it was fired above or level with my aircraft because the background of the sky seems to make the smoke almost impossible to see. I guesstimated that head-on it'll take about 20 seconds for the missile to hit you if fired at around 20km away, and 24 seconds side-on. Does everyone just put the missile on their 3/9 line and bleed the missile's energy off? I always thought that you'd be at a disadvantage because you have to turn back in to take the shot. -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

I don't have any trouble understanding the SPO anymore thanks to you guys helping me out, but I'm still confused on how to know where and how far an SARH missile is when it's fired at you. With labels off and an SARH missile heading for me I just kinda panic since I don't know when it's gonna hit me. :joystick: -

Thanks for your informative replies! I downloaded your Surviving the Duel video Ironhand and it helped out a lot. After that I think it's safe to say that I'd prefer it if an ARH was coming for me instead of an SARH! Thanks to uploading that track Viper! What version of Lock-On is it for? I have v1.02 and all I got was a whole lot of blue sky and then after a while the woman said "left engine fire, right engine fire..." . If it's for Flaming Cliffs then I'll have to wait a little longer since 214th Hitman donated his Flaming Cliffs to me, and Ruggbutt posted it to me a few days ago. :D Should me here in about a month. Can't wait! So when it comes to an SARH missile it's a guessing game? Is there no definite way of knowing how far and where it is from you like the ARH? Is the only technique to try and count the seconds it would take to reach you? Would the missile padlock help at all? -

Damn that sucks! So how can I figure out how far an ARH missile is from me using the RWS? And is there a way to figure out how far an SARH missile is from me? -

So the RWR/RWS cannot track incoming missiles? That isn't much help! :noexpression: I can't believe that in the age of missiles they haven't even developed a way to know how far they are from your multi-million dollar fighter... -
Using the SPO-15LM system to evade incoming missiles?

Thanks for the link 159th_Viper, I'll probably try download if it has resume support. Otherwise it's pointless since my little wireless connection is very unstable. 159th_Viper does the +7 at the top of the table mean that 14 LEDs have been lit up, and -7 means that none have been lit up and that (in the case of an Su-27) the enemy is approximately 213km away? I did a few tests with labels on using the Su-27, and it seems as though the last bar lights up when the missile is about 7km away. Pity that the scale is so big. :( Are there any modes that can change the scale of the SPO-15LM (e.g. change it so that one LED lit up means that the threat is 2km closer instead of 7km)? The reason I ask is because what I usually do to try and evade missiles is wait until it's about 2km away and then I pull a high G roll and turn which works about 80% of the time and then once I've evaded the missile I'm in a good position to fire one of my own. -
I've been trying to ween myself off the use of labels but it's been really difficult. I don't have trouble finding the target, but when it comes to evading incoming missiles I'm hopeless. I never know where the missile is or how close it is to me and it always takes me by surprise and turns me into a fireball. I read somewhere about being able to know where and how far the missile is from you by using the Su-27 SPO-15LM threat warning system, but haven't figured it out yet. Is it possible or was I just gullible? Would really appreciate some help! Thanks guys.

External and cockpit mouse-look BIG PROBLEM!
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yup tried Alt+Tab but that didn't work, but... YOU FIXED MY PROBLEM!!! :D I remember that I downloaded Free-Track and installed it but was still waiting to order the webcam so I just left it installed! Wow dude props to you, Thanks so much! -

Nope I don't have a joystick, only a keyboard and mouse. Could a "stick profile" run even if I don't have a joystick? If so where could I disable it? -

Okay I un-installed LOMAC and Winamp, deleted their folders and did a registry clean again. I then re-installed LOMAC but NOT Winamp and applied the v1.02 FPS tweak. But I still don't have mouse-look for the cockpit or external views. I also tried changing the mouse but that didn't work either. :( -

So it was probably Winamp that messed up my mouse-look? I un-installed both Winamp and LOMAC, did a registry clean and then installed both of them again and did the necessary config and lua changes to LOMAC but it still didn't work. I'll give it a try again though. EDIT: nope haven't tried a different mouse, I'll do that now. :) -

Do you know which DLL it is? Because maybe you could upload your DLL that LOMAC uses and it could fix my mouse-look problems. -
