Lock-On for dummies: knowledge thread for noobs!
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I'm not very good at explaining, but this is kinda what I meant: ----------------------------------------------- HOW TO NOT LOSE A BANDIT ON YOUR RADAR: Don't you hate it when you're about to lock up a bandit and take the shot, but before that happens he suddenly disappears from radar view? Yeah, you start to panic and frantically scan the sky with your radar, but before you know it he's hit you. This is because he has slipped above or below your radar beam's scan elevation. If you wanna stop him from disppearing it's very simple. What you have to do it this: slew your lock-on box (dunno its proper name) next to the bandit so that your radar beam is pointed directly at him. Doing this, you won't lose sight of him on your radar and he won't be able to sneak above/below you. What you should do: What you shouldn't do: --------------------------------------------------------- You see, something that doesn't require you to join a squad or download a big file. And something that you most likely wouldn't find out on your own using the FBP. -
Are those the 3 main Falcon 4 big mods? Are there others? If those are all of them then I'd like to ask the question: which one would you say is the best, or if there isn't an outright winnner then what is each ones strengths and weaknesses?

I was thinking about how I could learn the little tips and tricks in Lock-On as quickly as possible (since the in-game training doesn't give it to you), and then it hit me: why not ask the community! If you think about it, Lock-On has a pretty huge learning curve, and it'd take years and years to learn most of it. So would you guys be nice enough to tell me something that I don't know? How to fly, how to use your radar, how to fire a missile, when to fire a missile, how to use ECM effectively, how to lose a lock on you, how to keep a lock on the bandit, how to evade a missile, how to be stealthy, missile strengths and weaknesses etc. etc. Anything! I tried to find and awesome example from a Falcon 4 thread where everyone added a little tutorial in each of their posts with a heading and pictures to explain it very nicely, but couldn't find it. :( So yeah, if you could make a nice tutorial post for us noobs out there it'd be great. Hope you can help guys, thanks!

Quick question: I use my mouse to look around in the cockpit, but could I somehow make it so that I can press, for example, Shift and then the mouse will be used to slew the aiming box in BVR mode? Have I even understood what you guys are talking about? :noexpression:

Two really weird things happened to me while playing online today. The first was that I was shot down by an R-77 while flying straight and level, but my RWR gave me now warning and it didn't even show that a radar nearby had been turned on. The second and even weirder thing was that I recorded that flight, and then when I played the recording to get an ACMI file made, my recording showed that I hadn't even got into the air. It showed that I crashed on take-off by going off the side of the runway. By I was actually in the air for about 30 minutes and also got a kill. What the heck happened? Why did I not get a launch warning for the R-77 or even a warning that a radar nearby had been turned on prior to the launch? And more so, why did my recording show that I crashed on take-off?

Thanks for the pic Mustang! I have more questions, and since they seem to keep on coming I've decided to change the topic title. :P 4) I've noticed that some people online use AIM-120s and AIM-7s in the same payload. I thought that everyone used only AIM-120s. What's good about the AIM-7 that makes them use it? 5) I remember GGTharos said something about the RWR/RWS not being gyro-stabalised, and that's why the position of the bandit changes positions on the RWR/RWS when you go from a bank to level flight. Would it be easy to fix this problem in the v1.13 patch? It would help so much in close combat situations!

I still can't find the brake light. :( Could someone maybe upload a screenshot to show me where it is?
-
I thought the rapid chirping is sounded when a missile is launched at you.
-
I get the chirp sounds and the beep beep beep launch sounds, but I've never hear the solid lock tone before. :noexpression: I only get a solid lock tone when flying the Russian planes.
-
Yup I kinda added no. 3 at the last second. :) I read the TEWS/RWR section in the LOFC manual but I still don't know how to find out if I'm being locked up by someone (if I'm flying the F-15). And another thing: is there a way to make the missile launch warning (in the F-15) sound at more regular intervals? I love the Russian missile launch warning because it sounds at very short intervals so you know exactly when the missile has lost its lock on you (plus you get the nice constant beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep when you've been locked up), but in the F-15 you've gotta wait ages to find out if you've lost the lock or not.

1) Where is the air-brake light in the cockpit? I've looked everywhere but can't find it. I always end up flying around with the brake out because I forget to retract it. :music_whistling: 2) Is there a way to find out if someone has locked on to you? 3) Are there any tips and tricks that you could give me when flying the F-15? Something that the in game tutorials didn't tell me. :smilewink: Thanks guys, cheerz!

So in Lock-On it's essentially useless?
-
I have a few questions about the Russian TWS radar mode: 1) Why can't it function while jammers are being picked up, but the US TWS can? So far I've noticed that its advantages are that it auto-locks onto a bandit if you move the box next to it while still being able to see the other bandits on your HUD, and a nice picture is shown on the MFD. But that's about it. So I have some questions on this part: 2) Does the bandit get a radar warning if you fire your SARH/ARH at him in TWS mode? 3) Can you fire multiple missiles are different bandits at the same time like the US TWS mode? 4) Are there any other things that I should know about the Russian TWS mode? Hope you can help, thanks guys.

Yup that was the scene, damn amazing! :) Is the colour de-saturation something that can be done in Lock-On somehow or only with movie making tools?
-
Cool thanks that did the trick. :) I could only go up to 8x with my card so I still have some jaggedness. Is there any way to go higher?
-
No I mean how did he get his shadows looking so good, when I have mine on highest they don't look nearly as good has his. Mine are usually all jagged, but his are really smooth.
-
I was watching the Superior Fighters video made by Glowing AMRAAM and noticed that in one of the scenes the MiG-29 looked almost real. What made it like that was the shadows I think. When I put my shadows on full they don't look nearly that good and smooth. How'd he do it?

What in Lock-On is fiction and what is not?
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Hey how do you cycle between bomb targets? I always just follow the order that the targets are given to me. Are there any other things that are fiction in LO? -
I remember reading something about lock-on before I got it, and one of the things it said was that some of the technology used in it had not been used in real life yet. Does anyone know what's real and what isn't in LOMAC/LOFC? One thing I find hard to believe is how, in air-to-ground mode, your targets have a diamond around them to mark where they are. Surely that can't be real? Another thing is the Russian MFD in NAV mode. Do you really get a nice image of your way points and the surrounding airports like that? And what about the little dot that appears on the HUD when you are locked on to a bogey (gimbal I think) to help keep it within your radar's limits? Is that used in real life?

What usually happens is that I fire a missile at the bandit and go defensive, since the bandit also fired a missile at me. Once I've evaded the incoming missile and turn back into the fight I'm pretty much blind. I try using the RWR but, in the case of the F-15C (and to a certain extent the other fighters), it's weird and doesn't seem to accurately show me where exactly the bandit is. What happens is that I turn back into the fight and carry on turning until the RWR shows me that the bandit is on my 12 o' clock. I then level out, BUT once I'm level the RWR suddenly shows me that the bandit is now on my 3/9 o' clock! I carry on trying to put the bandit on my 12 but once I'm level again the same thing happens... While I'm doing this I don't have much time to concentrate on what's going on outside, plus the visibility is so sh*t that I don't have a hope in hell of spotting the bandit so I stick to using the RWR, and eventually a heat-seeker hits me. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong (yes I know I should be looking out for incoming heaters, but I don't want him to make the first move) and why, when I turn, does the RWR say the bandit is on my 12, but when I level out it then says the bandit is on my 3/9? Help would really be appreciated, thanks guys. :helpsmilie:

Just interested to know who you guys think is the best virtual pilot in the Lock On community. I'm kinda new so I couldn't make a poll since I don't know who the contenders are. :smilewink:

Why do servers forbid Tacview ACMI file recording?!
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks guys, helped a lot! EDIT: Sorry I was just really frustrated because, for once I pulled off some "amazing" moves online but couldn't watch how I did it on Tacview. -
I was told that the best way for me to improve (after I ranted about some guy dodging 4 of my R-27EMs at close range) was to download Tacview, so I downloaded it. Now I realize that it has no use since a lot of the popular servers don't allow Tacview ACMI files to be recorded. This is really frustrating and I wanna know why they would be so selfish. How would it affect them?

Unresponsive flight controls. a little help please :)
Alexrey replied to Alexrey's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I don't think that would be such a good idea when playing online, since I'd most probably crash because of waiting a minute or two to task out of LOFC and then get back in again. EDIT: I found out that I had auto-level flight (or whatever it's called) on. Problem solved! :) -

No it can't be autopilot because that doesn't have a key assigned to it anymore. A has been assigned to roll left.
